Taxonomy & naming
Bryconexodon juruenae was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1980, with the type locality placed in the upper Juruena River, part of the Tapajós River basin in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso. The genus Bryconexodon is monotypic — B. juruenae is its only recognised species — and it belongs within the large family Characidae, the characins.
The valid name Bryconexodon juruenae Géry, 1980 is listed without parentheses because the species has remained in its original genus since its description. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & van der Laan) is the governing authority for the valid name. The species epithet juruenae is a Latinised reference to the Juruena River, the principal waterway of the type locality.
Morphology
