Bryconexodon trombetasi was described in 1991 by Jégu, Santos, and Ferreira in the Journal of Natural History (25(3): 773–782), based on material from the Trombetas River basin in Pará state, Brazil — the type locality that gives the species its name. The genus Bryconexodon belongs to the family Characidae, the vast and taxonomically complex family of characins that dominates Neotropical freshwater systems. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Bryconexodon trombetasi Jégu, Santos & Ferreira, 1991.
Bryconexodon is a small genus within Characidae, closely allied to the larger and more familiar bryconins and serrasalminins but distinguished by features of jaw dentition and body form. The 1991 description distinguished this species from other members of the genus and placed it within a broader Amazonian radiation of rheophilic characids — fishes whose body plans are adapted to life in high-energy lotic environments. The specific epithet trombetasi directly references the Trombetas River, the primary drainage from which the species was first collected.
Morphology
Bryconexodon trombetasi reaches a maximum recorded length of approximately 4.5 in standard length (SL) according to FishBase, making it a medium-small characid. The species is described as benthopelagic, occupying the lower to mid water column in its fast-flowing habitat rather than strictly hugging the substrate or schooling at the surface.
Detailed morphological data in the public domain are sparse for this species.
