Bryconops colanegra was described by Barry Chernoff and Antonio Machado-Allison in 1999. The species is placed in the genus Bryconops, a diverse Neotropical lineage currently assigned to the family Iguanodectidae — a placement supported by molecular phylogenetic work that separates the iguanodectids from the broader characid assemblage. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) is the governing authority for the valid name, which stands as Bryconops colanegra Chernoff & Machado-Allison, 1999.
The genus Bryconops encompasses more than a dozen species distributed across the drainage basins of northern and central South America, particularly the Orinoco, Amazon, and their major tributaries. Species in the genus are united by body form and certain osteological characters but present a complex of largely allopatric forms that can be challenging to distinguish without close morphological examination. B. colanegra is set apart principally by the dark pigmentation at the base of its caudal fin, a character visible even in preserved specimens.
Morphology
Bryconops colanegra is a fusiform, laterally somewhat compressed fish typical of the Bryconops genus — a streamlined, active pelagic swimmer built for open-water school life in river channels and adjacent habitats. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 3.5 in (approximately 3.5 in), making it a small to medium-sized species within its genus.
The defining feature of the species is the dark blotch or smudge concentrated at the mid-basal region of the caudal fin, from which both the specific epithet and the common designation "blacktail" derive. The body is otherwise silvery, with the lateral coloration and fin pigmentation broadly comparable to related Bryconops; scale rows and fin counts (meristics) are the formal diagnostic characters used in the original description to separate it from congeners. Like most iguanodectids, it carries the adipose fin characteristic of many characoids.
Habitat
FishBase records Bryconops colanegra from the Caroní River basin in South America. The Caroní is a major left-bank tributary of the lower Orinoco in Venezuela, draining the Guiana Highlands, and its waters range from clear, relatively acidic blackwater and clearwater streams in the upper catchment to more turbid lowland reaches. B. colanegra is characterised by FishBase as a benthopelagic freshwater fish of tropical rivers, inhabiting the water column above the substrate rather than being a strict bottom-dweller.
Broader studies of the Bryconops genus indicate that species in this group occur across a range of Neotropical water types — clearwater, blackwater, and whitewater — often in the main channel and larger streams rather than in shallow marginal or floodplain habitats. Water temperatures in the Caroní basin span the typical Neotropical freshwater range, and dissolved oxygen levels adequate for active schooling fish are characteristic of these well-oxygenated river systems.
Feeding
Bryconops colanegra is a member of a genus known for opportunistic, generalised feeding in the water column. Bryconops species consume a range of prey items including small invertebrates, insect larvae, and material falling to the water surface, with the precise composition of the diet varying by habitat and season. The streamlined body form and terminal to slightly upturned mouth of Bryconops species suit them for pursuing prey in open water rather than bottom-feeding.
No feeding study specific to B. colanegra has been published in the available literature. No specific observations of mating behaviour in Bryconops colanegra have been published in the primary literature available at the time of writing. Like the great majority of characoids, species of Bryconops are presumed to be egg-scattering open-water spawners without parental care, releasing adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among aquatic vegetation or into the water column during the spawning season.
In seasonally flooded Neotropical river systems, many characoids time spawning to rising water levels, when newly inundated forest margins and floodplain vegetation provide shelter for eggs and early larvae as well as abundant food for juveniles. Whether B. colanegra follows this pattern or spawns year-round in the clearwater and blackwater reaches of the upper Caroní basin has not been documented.
Breeding
Bryconops colanegra has not been bred in the aquarium to any documented degree, and no captive breeding account was located during research for this article. In the wild, reproduction presumably follows the egg-scattering mode common to iguanodectids and related characoids: females release eggs that are fertilised externally, with no subsequent guard or care from either parent.
Adhesive or slightly sticky eggs deposited among fine-leaved aquatic plants or submerged roots would be typical for the group. Incubation and larval development in warm Neotropical river water are generally rapid — hatching within 24–48 hours and larvae becoming free-swimming within a few days is the usual pattern for tropical characoids of this size — though these details have not been confirmed for B. colanegra specifically.
In the aquarium
Bryconops colanegra is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. It does not appear in mainstream fishkeeping literature or trade catalogs, and the species is rarely if ever exported for ornamental purposes. Its small size (under 3.5 in SL) and schooling nature would, in principle, make it suitable for a moderately large community aquarium with appropriately soft to neutral water and good flow, as befitting a fish from the well-oxygenated rivers of the Guiana Highlands.
Aquarists seeking Bryconops species in general should be aware that identification within the genus is challenging and that imports occasionally reach specialist retailers without formal identification. Any hobbyist keeping a fish believed to be B. colanegra should document the caudal-fin pigmentation carefully, as the dark basal blotch is the primary distinguishing feature. Data on preferred water chemistry, temperature range, and compatibility are inferred from habitat records and genus-level knowledge rather than direct aquarium experience.
Conservation
Bryconops colanegra is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment completed in April 2017. The LC designation reflects the species' occurrence within a relatively large river system — the Caroní basin — without evidence of a population-level decline sufficient to trigger a threatened category.
The Caroní River basin hosts substantial hydroelectric infrastructure, including the Guri dam complex, one of the largest hydroelectric reservoirs in the world. Large impoundments can substantially alter fish community composition in tropical river systems, fragmenting populations, flooding rapids habitat, and modifying water chemistry and seasonal flow regimes. Whether such modifications have affected B. colanegra is not documented in the current assessment. The species' benthopelagic habits and occurrence in a geographically large basin suggest resilience, but further surveys of the upper Caroní and its tributaries would be needed to confirm population status with confidence.
