Bryconops collettei is a slender, schooling characiform from the Caura River system of Venezuela, reaching just under 3 in standard length and distinguished among its congeners by the red coloration of the upper half of its caudal-fin ocellus and a relatively short snout. Described in 2005 by Chernoff and Machado-Allison, it inhabits moderate to fast-moving waters over rocky and sandy substrates — the kind of clear, acidic Guiana Shield drainage where terrestrial insects raining onto the surface make up much of a small fish's diet. It has no established common name in the hobby and remains a scientific curiosity rather than a staple in the aquarium trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Bryconops collettei was described in 2005 by Barry Chernoff and Antonio Machado-Allison, alongside the related Bryconops magoi, in a monograph published in Zootaxa (1094:1–23) that also revisited Bryconops caudomaculatus (Günther). The type locality is in the Caura River drainage of Venezuela — part of the vast Orinoco basin of the Guiana Shield. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the valid name as Bryconops collettei Chernoff & Machado-Allison, 2005.

The genus Bryconops was historically placed in the family Characidae, the sprawling core of the order Characiformes, but molecular phylogenetic work has since supported removing it to a separate family, Iguanodectidae, alongside the Amazonian iguanodectins. Some references still list Bryconops under Characidae; the placement in Iguanodectidae follows the family-level taxonomy used here.

The specific epithet honours Bruce B. Collette, the American ichthyologist best known for his work on scombrids and related marine fishes, to whom the describers dedicated the species. The genus name Bryconops is constructed from the Greek roots bryko (to bite) and ops (appearance or face), alluding to the robust dentition characteristic of the group.

Morphology

Bryconops collettei is a small, streamlined fish reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 3 in. The body is elongate and laterally compressed in the manner typical of open-water schooling characiforms, without the extreme depth seen in deeper-bodied tetras. Like other Bryconops, it lacks an adipose fin — a feature that helps place the genus within Iguanodectidae.

Diagnostic characters separating B. collettei from its congeners include: red coloration limited to the upper half of the caudal-fin ocellus (rather than the full ocellus or its lower half); a pored lateral-line scale count of 44 to 48, modally 47; a notably short snout measuring 4.2–5.4% of standard length (mean 4.7%); and an anal-fin base length of 27.3–29.8% SL (mean 28.8%). The anal fin is long, with 29 to 36 rays, and there are 11 dorsal soft rays. Vertebral count runs 40 to 44. The overall appearance is of a silvery, moderately slender fish whose most conspicuous mark is the spotted tail pattern shared across the Bryconops complex.

Habitat

Within Venezuela, Bryconops collettei is known from the Caura River system, a major southern tributary of the Orinoco draining a largely undisturbed swathe of the Guiana Shield. The Caura is celebrated for the clarity and high quality of its waters — a blackwater to clearwater system with acidic, soft, ion-poor chemistry typical of ancient shield drainages.

FishBase characterises the species as benthopelagic and records it from moderate to fast-moving stretches over rocky and sandy substrates, including rapids and the inflows of small springs. Such microhabitats in Guiana Shield rivers are typically shaded by gallery forest, cool relative to lowland Amazonian standards, and subject to strong seasonal fluctuations in water level and current speed. The species schools with other small characids in the upper water column of these habitats, a lifestyle that suits its streamlined body plan.

Feeding

The recorded diet of Bryconops collettei in the wild centres on terrestrial insects — invertebrates that fall or are blown onto the water surface from the riparian forest canopy. In forested Guiana Shield rivers, allochthonous inputs of this kind can dominate the diets of small surface-oriented characiforms across the annual cycle, particularly during the dry season when aquatic invertebrate production is lower and overhanging forest is dense.

In the aquarium, no specific feeding data has been published for this species. By analogy with the genus and with other insectivorous small characiforms from similar habitats, it can reasonably be expected to accept a range of small prepared, frozen, and live foods — including Daphnia, brine shrimp, small bloodworms, and quality micro-pellets — though its aquarium husbandry remains poorly documented.

Mating

No observations of mating behaviour in Bryconops collettei have been published. The genus Bryconops belongs to a lineage of open-water, schooling characiforms that elsewhere in the order typically engage in group egg-scattering with no lasting pair bond and no parental investment. Males in such species commonly pursue ripe females into faster currents or along vegetation margins, releasing milt simultaneously with the female's egg broadcast.

In the Caura River system, seasonal flooding and the associated expansion of shallow inundated forest margins likely cue reproductive activity, as they do across much of the Orinoco watershed. Fine-leaved aquatic plants or submerged root masses probably serve as the adhesive substrate for any eggs produced, in the manner common among characiforms that spawn in structured microhabitats rather than in open-water pelagic bursts.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Bryconops collettei has not been documented in the published literature or the specialist hobby press. The species does not appear to be established in the ornamental-fish trade, and no breeding accounts are available to draw upon.

Based on the reproductive biology of related characiforms, a breeding attempt would most plausibly follow the egg-scattering pattern: soft, acidic, warm water (consistent with Caura basin conditions), fine-leaved plants or spawning mops as an egg substrate, no parental care, and the removal of adults after spawning to prevent egg predation. Adhesive eggs among characiforms of this type typically hatch within 24–72 hours at tropical temperatures, with free-swimming fry requiring infusoria-grade first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. These details remain speculative for B. collettei specifically, and data sparse is the appropriate caveat.

In the aquarium

Bryconops collettei is not an established aquarium fish and is essentially absent from the hobby trade outside Venezuela. It is occasionally encountered by researchers and wildlife fishers working in the Caura basin but has not been systematically exported or bred in captivity at any scale.

For aquarists who do obtain specimens — through specialist importers or scientific collection networks — the species' Guiana Shield provenance suggests soft, acidic, warm water in the 75–82 °F range, low conductivity, and good oxygenation consistent with the moderate to fast-moving stretches it inhabits in the wild. As a schooling fish it should be kept in groups. Its small size (under 3 in SL) makes it compatible with the smaller characin community tank rather than with large, boisterous tankmates. Surface feeding behaviour makes it a candidate for accepting floating or slowly sinking foods. Beyond these extrapolations, aquarium husbandry data for this species is absent from the literature.

Conservation

Bryconops collettei has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; FishBase records its conservation status as Not Evaluated (NE). The species is known from the Caura River drainage, which at the time of writing remains one of the better-protected large river systems on the Venezuelan Guiana Shield — its watershed is largely free from mining, major agriculture, and hydroelectric impoundment, unlike many comparable rivers in the broader Orinoco system.

The narrow geographic range within Venezuela and the dependence on intact gallery forest and clean-water rapids are potential vulnerabilities, as both mining expansion and forest clearance have intensified on the Guiana Shield in recent decades. Without a formal assessment no population trend data exist. The species' obscurity in the trade means it faces no collection pressure for the aquarium market, and its restricted range within a relatively intact system suggests that broader watershed protection is the most relevant conservation lever for it and many co-occurring endemic fishes.
