The smallest member of a family celebrated for its keel-shaped chest, Carnegiella schereri reaches barely 1 in in standard length and spends virtually its entire life hovering at the water surface, scanning the film for fallen insects. Its understated silvery flanks and dark-spotted belly are perfectly matched to the sun-dappled, tea-coloured waters of the western Amazon and its Andean tributaries — a fish so thoroughly adapted to the surface zone that it rarely descends more than a few centimetres into the water column. Despite its miniature size it is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, reflecting a distribution that spans portions of Peru, Brazil, and Colombia.

Taxonomy & naming

Carnegiella schereri was described by the Venezuelan ichthyologist Alfredo Fernández-Yépez in 1950. It is placed within Carnegiella, the smaller-bodied genus of the family Gasteropelecidae — the freshwater hatchetfishes — which also includes the more commonly encountered C. marthae, C. strigata, and C. myersi. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Carnegiella schereri Fernández-Yépez, 1950.

Within the genus, C. schereri is most often confused with C. marthae, the black-winged hatchetfish, which it closely resembles in body plan and size. The two are best separated by belly patterning: C. schereri carries dark brown spots on the ventral keel region, while C. marthae shows dark brown streaks. The genus Carnegiella is distinguished from the larger Gasteropelecus and Thoracocharax by its lack of an adipose fin — a character shared only within Carnegiella among the hatchetfishes.

Morphology

Carnegiella schereri is a tiny, highly compressed fish reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 1 in, making it one of the smallest of all hatchetfishes. The body shape is the defining feature of all Gasteropelecidae: the ventral profile is deeply keeled, curving in a pronounced arc from the chin to the caudal peduncle, housing an enlarged musculature associated with the pectoral fins. The dorsal profile is comparatively straight and shallow, giving the fish a wedge or hatchet cross-section when viewed head-on.

Coloration is silvery on the flanks, with the characteristic hatchetfish pattern of a dark dorsal stripe and a pale lateral stripe running from behind the operculum to the caudal fin. The ventral keel bears dark brown spots, distinguishing it from the streaked pattern of C. marthae. The eyes are large relative to head size, an adaptation to detecting prey and predators at the surface. Fin rays are delicate; the pectoral fins are large and wing-like and are capable of rapid beating, allowing the fish to leap from the surface in a brief gliding escape.

Habitat

Carnegiella schereri is distributed through the Amazon River basin with records from Peru, Brazil, and Colombia. It inhabits slow-moving to still, heavily vegetated waters — flooded forest margins, backwater pools, tributary creeks, and the sheltered edges of larger rivers — where overhanging vegetation delivers a continuous rain of terrestrial insects onto the water surface.

The species is a committed surface dweller, occupying the uppermost few centimetres of the water column in the shade of marginal plants and fallen leaves. Water conditions in its range are typically soft and acidic: temperatures of 75–81 °F and pH values of 5.0–7.0 are typical of Amazonian blackwater and clearwater environments. The surface of such water bodies is often calm, and the extreme lateral compression of the fish's body is an adaptation to existing in this thin, two-dimensional feeding zone.

Feeding

Carnegiella schereri is an insectivore that feeds almost exclusively at the water surface. In the wild it takes small terrestrial invertebrates that land or fall onto the water film — flies, small beetles, ants, and other airborne insects — as well as aquatic invertebrates and zooplankton that rise into the surface layer. The enlarged eyes face somewhat upward, giving the fish good vision for detecting prey at or above the waterline.

In the aquarium it accepts small live foods preferentially: mosquito larvae (particularly effective as they hang at the surface), brine shrimp nauplii, and small Daphnia. Finely crushed floating flake and micro-pellets can be accepted once the fish is settled, but live food consistently triggers a stronger feeding response. Being so small, it cannot handle most standard-sized aquarium foods whole; particle size matters more than with larger surface feeders.

Mating

Like all Gasteropelecidae, Carnegiella schereri is an egg-scattering species with no parental care. In the wild, spawning likely occurs during the high-water season when flooded forest provides abundant cover and food. Males and females are superficially similar, though ripe females may appear slightly deeper-bodied when viewed from above due to a distended abdomen full of eggs.

Displays between males in the aquarium are subtle — the fish are not strongly territorial and do not show the overt colour displays seen in cichlids or rainbowfishes. A sexually active pair will rise toward the surface and make brief contact near fine-leaved floating or emergent plants, where eggs are deposited. The small adhesive eggs are scattered among plant leaves or floating vegetation rather than buried or guarded.

Breeding

Carnegiella schereri has been bred in captivity, though it is less frequently spawned than C. strigata or C. marthae, partly due to its small size and consequent fragility. A conditioned pair or small group placed in a species-only breeding tank with soft, acidic, very clean water (pH 5.5–6.5, temperature around 79–82 °F) and dense fine-leaved plants or floating spawning mops will spawn readily once comfortable. Dim lighting reduces stress.

A spawn may yield 100–200 eggs. These are small and prone to fungus in suboptimal water quality; good aeration and low bacterial load are important. Incubation at typical breeding temperatures runs approximately 24–36 hours. The adults must be removed immediately after spawning, as they show no parental care and will consume both eggs and fry. Newly hatched fry require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food for the first few days before advancing to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Growth is slow, reflecting the species' small adult size.

In the aquarium

Carnegiella schereri is a delicate but rewarding surface fish suited to a calm, well-planted nano or species aquarium. Its tiny size — under 1 in — means it can be kept in smaller tanks than most surface dwellers, but it is intolerant of poor water quality and requires soft, slightly acidic water maintained with care. A tightly fitted lid is essential: hatchetfishes are accomplished jumpers and will clear an open top with minimal provocation, particularly when startled.

This species does best in groups of six or more, as it is a shoaling fish that becomes stressed and skittish when kept alone or in very small numbers. A tank with floating plants or overhanging leaves, subdued lighting, gentle surface movement, and still or very slow water flow mimics its natural microhabitat and will bring the fish into comfortable, natural behaviour. Tankmates should be small, peaceful, and mid-to-bottom dwelling — tiny rasboras, small pencilfish, dwarf corydoras — to avoid competition at the surface and to avoid predation risk to such a small fish. Carnegiella schereri is one of the more challenging hatchetfishes to keep simply because of its diminutive size; it is best reserved for experienced nano-fish keepers rather than beginners.

Conservation

Carnegiella schereri is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment completed on 12 August 2020. The species' broad distribution across the western Amazon basin — spanning Peru, Brazil, and Colombia — means it is not considered range-restricted in the way that some hatchetfishes are, and no major range-wide declines have been documented.

Nonetheless, like many Amazonian surface-zone specialists, C. schereri is sensitive to habitat alteration. Deforestation removes the overhanging riparian vegetation that delivers its insect prey and provides shade and shelter, while agricultural and industrial contamination of blackwater habitats can affect water chemistry in ways that impact this acid-water species. Its small size makes it difficult to monitor reliably in the field. Within the aquarium hobby it is available but not as common as C. strigata or C. marthae; where it does appear in the trade it is predominantly wild-caught, and sourcing from reputable suppliers that use sustainable collection practices is encouraged.
