Taxonomy & naming
Carnegiella strigata was originally described by Albert Günther in 1864 from upper Amazon specimens. The original combination placed the species in Gasteropelecus, and a number of synonyms accumulated over the following century, including Gasteropelecus fasciatus and Gasteropelecus strigatus, both now treated as junior synonyms. The genus Carnegiella was erected to accommodate the smaller hatchetfishes, separating them from the larger-bodied Gasteropelecus; the parenthetical authority in the current combination reflects this transfer.
Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes at the California Academy of Sciences is the governing authority for the valid name Carnegiella strigata (Günther, 1864). The family Gasteropelecidae, the freshwater hatchetfishes, is a small neotropical family of surface-dwelling characiforms whose most distinctive feature is the enormously deepened keel formed by the enlarged sternal apparatus and its associated flight musculature — a morphological specialisation unique among freshwater fishes and convergent with nothing else in the Characiformes.
Within Carnegiella, the species is identified principally by its marbled colour pattern — irregular dark brown to blackish streaks and blotches over a pale cream to yellow-white ground — which distinguishes it from the plainer-sided congeners C. myersi and C. schereri. Minor meristic variation exists across its range, and some authorities have recognised subspecies, though these are not universally accepted.
Morphology
The marbled hatchetfish reaches a maximum standard length of approximately 1.5 in, making it one of the smallest members of its family. The body form is extreme: viewed from the side, the fish resembles a hatchet or meat cleaver, with the straight, sharply keeled ventral profile representing the blade and the back barely arched. The pectoral-girdle region is so massively developed that it accounts for a disproportionate fraction of the fish's total body depth, housing the large muscles that drive the pectoral fins in rapid, wing-like beats during flight.
The lateral pattern gives the species its common name: irregular dark brown to black marbling over a pale cream or yellowish ground colour, often with a dark longitudinal stripe running from the eye along the flank toward the caudal peduncle. The belly is silvery. Fins are largely clear. The eye is large relative to head length, sitting high on the skull — an adaptation for surface surveillance both for prey and for incoming aerial predators. Sexes are similar in colour and pattern; females become visibly rounder in the abdomen when gravid, the only reliable external distinction between the sexes in routine aquarium conditions.
Habitat
Carnegiella strigata is distributed across the upper Amazon basin, with records from Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and adjacent headwater drainages. It is a fish of the surface layer, inhabiting the still to very gently flowing, often heavily shaded margins of forest streams, flooded forest (igapó), and oxbow lakes. Overhanging riparian vegetation is a near-constant feature of occupied habitat: the fish shelters beneath leaf litter and root tangles at the waterline, picking aerial insects from the surface film and from low-flying or water-skimming invertebrates.
Water conditions in these Amazonian blackwater and clearwater habitats are typically warm and soft to very soft, with low pH. FishBase records a temperature range of 75–82 °F and a pH tolerance of 5.5–7.5 for the species, consistent with the dilute, often acidic chemistry of upper Amazon forest streams. Conductivity is low. The surface zone the fish inhabits tends to be well oxygenated through gas exchange at the water–air interface, but the water column below can be oxygen-depleted in dense, still igapó environments.
Feeding
The marbled hatchetfish is a surface-feeding insectivore. In nature it exploits the air-water interface almost exclusively, taking insects and other arthropods that land on or fall to the surface, and supplementing this with zooplankton and fine plant matter near the surface film. The eye position — high on the head and angled slightly upward — optimises detection of objects at or just above the waterline. The fish may also actively pursue insects in flight by leaping from the surface and seizing prey mid-air, a behaviour documented in the family generally.
In captivity the marbled hatchetfish accepts small floating foods readily: fine flake, micro-pellets, and freeze-dried invertebrates all work, but the fish's surface-feeding habit means it seldom pursues sinking food. Frozen and live foods such as wingless fruit flies (Drosophila), brine shrimp nauplii offered at the surface, and small bloodworm are relished and improve breeding condition. Feeding from the surface is a behavioural imperative, and foods that sink quickly tend to go uneaten.
Mating
Carnegiella strigata is an egg-scattering, open spawner with no parental care, consistent with the pattern observed across Gasteropelecidae. Courtship is brief and not elaborate: a male pursues a gravid female toward fine-leaved surface or near-surface vegetation — floating plants, moss, or the roots of riparian vegetation in nature — and the pair release eggs and sperm together in a rapid pass through the spawning medium. There is no territory establishment, no nest construction, and no attachment of the pair beyond the spawning act itself.
In aquariums, spawning activity tends to be triggered by the typical conditioning stimuli: a small water-temperature rise, a water change with slightly softer or more acidic water, and extended photoperiod. Males become visibly more active in the presence of round-bellied females. Because there are no courtship signals that are easily observable at the scale of a small tetra, spawning is often discovered after the fact rather than watched in real time.
Breeding
Breeding the marbled hatchetfish in captivity is achievable but requires attention to water chemistry and fry care. Conditioned adults can be induced to spawn by housing a group of six or more in a shallow, well-planted breeding tank with soft, slightly acidic water — pH around 6.0–6.5 and low conductivity — at the upper end of the temperature range. Floating plants such as Riccia or fine-leaved stem plants at the surface serve as the spawning substrate, and eggs are scattered among them without adhesion or active placement.
Eggs are small and clear; adults show no parental behaviour and will consume eggs and fry if left with them. Breeders remove adults after spawning or harvest surface vegetation to a separate rearing vessel. At 79–82 °F the eggs hatch within 24–36 hours. The newly hatched fry are tiny and initially hang vertically near the surface; they need very small first foods — infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry food — for the first week before graduating to Artemia nauplii and micro-powders. Growth is slow and the fry are delicate, making successful rearing more challenging than with many small tetras.
In the aquarium
The marbled hatchetfish is a popular and long-established aquarium species, widely available as tank-bred stock. It is peaceful, does not harass tankmates, and is an excellent community fish for a blackwater-style Amazonian biotope alongside cardinal tetras, pencilfish, corydoras, and small apistogrammas. A minimum group of six is recommended — ideally more — as isolated individuals become stressed and tend to hide or remain motionless. The fish is a drifter rather than an active swimmer at the mid-water level, spending almost all its time within a few centimetres of the surface.
The primary husbandry consideration is the species' jumping ability. The flight behaviour that makes the family so remarkable is a genuine escape response, and a marbled hatchetfish can clear a tank edge with ease: a tight-fitting lid is non-negotiable. Beyond that, the setup should favour the surface zone — floating plants provide shade and shelter and mimic the overhanging vegetation of the natural habitat. Water quality should be clean and well-oxygenated. The species tolerates neutral pH reasonably well in established tanks but thrives in soft, slightly acidic water consistent with its Amazonian origins. It is sensitive to sudden parameter changes and to ammonia and nitrite, making it unsuitable for new or unstable aquariums.
As a dedicated surface feeder it needs floating or surface-delivered food; bottom-feeding tankmates make good companions because competition at the surface is minimal. The fish is not long-lived — two to three years is typical — but its low aggression, modest size, and visual distinctiveness make it a rewarding resident of an appropriately arranged community tank.
Conservation
Carnegiella strigata has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List as of the time of writing. The species is widely distributed across the upper Amazon basin — Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and adjacent headwater drainages — and is abundant in suitable habitat, which likely explains the absence of a formal assessment: it is not a candidate for immediate listing concern the way narrowly endemic species are. The ornamental fishery for this species has operated for decades, and it remains one of the more commonly collected Amazonian small fish.
The absence of an IUCN assessment does not mean the species faces no pressures. Habitat loss through Amazon deforestation, degradation of riparian forest, and sedimentation of forest streams affects the blackwater microhabitats the species depends on. Much of the trade stock originates from wild collection rather than aquaculture, as the species is more challenging to breed at commercial scale than a neon tetra. Hobbyist-bred stock, where available, is the preferred choice from a conservation standpoint. The species is not currently listed under CITES, and no specific conservation actions are in place for it.
