Charax awa is a predatory characid described from the Amapuá River drainage of Amapá State in northern Brazil, named in a 2018 revision of the genus Charax by Guimarães, Brito, Ferreira and Ottoni in Neotropical Ichthyology. A member of a genus of small to mid-sized piscivores, it is little known outside ichthyological literature and carries no established common name. Its description from a remote Amazonian tributary underscores how much Neotropical fish diversity still awaits documentation.

Taxonomy & naming

Charax awa was described by Guimarães, Brito, Ferreira and Ottoni in 2018, with the description published in Neotropical Ichthyology. The type locality is the Amapuá River system, Amapá State, northern Brazil. The valid name as governed by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer and Fong) is Charax awa Guimarães, Brito, Ferreira & Ottoni, 2018; paratypes are held in Brazilian institutional collections.

The genus Charax Scopoli, 1777 belongs to the subfamily Characinae within the large family Characidae and is the nominal genus of a group sometimes informally called characins or glass tetras, though the genus itself contains primarily predatory species. Charax is one of several genera that share the slender-bodied, large-toothed predatory bauplan in Amazonian and Orinoquian drainages. The 2018 paper by Guimarães and colleagues represents part of an ongoing revision of this taxonomically complex genus, and the placement of C. awa is consistent with the current classification maintained by Eschmeyer's Catalog.

Morphology

Charax awa shares the general body plan of the genus: a moderately elongate, laterally compressed body with a relatively large head, a terminal to subterminal mouth equipped with stout, pointed teeth suited to seizing prey, and a short adipose fin. The eye is large relative to the head, as is typical among predatory characids that hunt by sight in open or lightly structured water.

Published size data for C. awa specifically are sparse; members of the genus Charax range from roughly 4–8 in standard length depending on species. Coloration in life is not well documented for this species; genus-level notes describe a generally silvery, translucent body with a dark lateral stripe or blotch pattern, a reflective silver flank, and sometimes a dark humeral spot — a pattern consistent with a fish hunting in clear tropical streams.

Habitat

Charax awa is known from the Amapuá River, a tributary system in Amapá State, northern Brazil. Amapá occupies the far northeastern corner of the Brazilian Amazon, bordered by French Guiana to the north, and its river systems drain through terra firme and floodplain forests into the Amazon estuary and the Atlantic coast.

The broader habitat type typical for Charax species in this region is clear to moderately turbid, warm, acidic tropical freshwater with low to moderate conductivity — conditions reflecting the weathered, nutrient-poor soils of Amazonian catchments. Water temperatures in Amapá lowland rivers generally fall in the range of 75–84 °F, with pH values typically acidic to near-neutral. Precise field measurements for the Amapuá system at the time of collection are not documented in sources available to this profile.

Feeding

Charax is a piscivorous genus; its members are active predators that feed primarily on small fishes, using their large eyes and swift, darting attack to ambush or chase prey. The dentition — conical, relatively large teeth on both jaws — is adapted for gripping slippery fish rather than processing invertebrates or plant material.

Diet specifics for C. awa in the wild have not been published. By genus-level analogy, juveniles may also take large invertebrates such as aquatic insects and crustaceans before transitioning toward an increasingly piscivorous diet with growth. In captivity, members of the genus Charax generally require live or meaty frozen foods; they are not suited to communities of small fish.

Mating

No published observations of mating behaviour in Charax awa are available. Within the family Characidae, open-water or plant-associated egg-scattering is the widespread reproductive mode, and there is no evidence that Charax departs from this pattern. Males and females would be expected to scatter adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs over substrate or vegetation during a brief, active spawning embrace, with no pair bond formed.

Sexual dimorphism in Charax is typically subtle in preserved material; in some congeners, gravid females appear visibly fuller-bodied. Whether C. awa shows any courtship coloration or behavioural display is undocumented.

Breeding

Charax awa has not been bred in captivity in any documented account available at the time of writing. The breeding biology can be inferred from the family: egg-scattering with no parental care is the expected mode, with adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved vegetation or over soft substrate, and both eggs and fry left entirely unattended. Incubation periods and fry size are unknown for this species.

Given its predatory habits and the rarity of the species in the hobby, captive breeding records are unlikely to exist. Any aquarist working with the species would need to provide a dedicated breeding tank, remove eggs promptly to prevent predation by the parents, and supply appropriately small live foods for newly hatched fry.

In the aquarium

Charax awa is not an established aquarium fish. No husbandry records or trade presence are known, and it is unlikely to be encountered in the ornamental trade given its remote provenance and the niche status of the genus. The species was described from scientific specimens, and live fish are unknown in hobbyist collections.

For reference, members of Charax generally require a spacious, well-filtered aquarium, warm soft-to-moderately-hard acidic water, and a diet of live or defrosted fish, large invertebrates, or meaty frozen foods. They are incompatible with smaller tank mates, which they will predate, and should be kept singly or in species-only groups. Any attempt to maintain C. awa in captivity would need to replicate the soft, warm, acidic waters of Amapá's river systems.

Conservation

Charax awa has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. As a species described in 2018 from a restricted, remote drainage in Amapá State, it falls into the large category of recently described Neotropical fishes that have not yet undergone formal conservation evaluation. Amapá State retains extensive intact forest cover and is home to several large protected areas, which may provide de facto habitat protection for river systems within its boundaries.

The primary risks facing newly described Amazonian endemics of this kind are habitat modification from agricultural expansion, gold mining (garimpo), and associated sedimentation and mercury contamination in river systems. Without population surveys or range data beyond the type locality, the actual conservation status of C. awa remains unknown. Its description and formal nomenclatural recognition are the first step toward any future assessment.
