Charax condei is a small, predatory characid confined to the blackwater streams and tributaries of the Rio Negro basin in Brazil. Reaching roughly 2 in standard length, it is one of the more compact members of the piranha-relative genus Charax — a group of slender, glass-bellied fin-nippers and micropredators whose outward delicacy belies a decidedly carnivorous lifestyle. The species inhabits slow-moving, humic-stained waters with pH values that can plunge below 5.0 in the wild, and it has barely registered in the mainstream aquarium trade, remaining largely unknown outside specialist circles.

Taxonomy & naming

Charax condei was described by Jacques Géry and Heinrich A. Knöppel in 1976. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid name as Charax condei (Géry & Knöppel, 1976), with parenthetical authority reflecting its original placement in a different genus before subsequent revision by Lucena (1987, 1989) confirmed its position in Charax. The type locality is the Rio Tarumazinho, a tributary of the lower Rio Negro above Manaus, in the state of Amazonas, Brazil.

Charax belongs to the family Characidae and the subfamily Characinae — the so-called glass-belly or piranha-relative group — alongside genera such as Roeboides, Cynopotamus, and Acestrorhynchus. Members of Charax share a laterally compressed, deep body, a distinctly decurved ventral profile, and the characteristic exposed, interlocking teeth that mark the subfamily as one built around active predation. Lucena's revisions in the late 1980s brought taxonomic clarity to the genus and anchored C. condei firmly within it.

Morphology

Charax condei is a small species, recorded to approximately 2 in standard length. Like other members of the genus it has a strongly laterally compressed, deep-bodied profile, with a notably decurved belly and a relatively large head bearing prominent eyes. The jaws are equipped with exposed, recurved teeth visible even when the mouth is closed — a hallmark of the predatory Characinae.

The body is semi-transparent in life, giving the fish a glassy or silvery appearance. A dark lateral stripe or midlateral pigment may be present, as is common in the genus, and the fins are generally hyaline. Given the species' rarity in the hobby and the limited published morphological accounts, detailed information on colour pattern and fin ray counts is sparse; the overall gestalt is that of a slender, shimmering, deep-bellied micro-predator typical of the Rio Negro's characid fauna.

Habitat

Charax condei is endemic to the Rio Negro basin in Amazonas state, Brazil. The Rio Negro is one of the world's great blackwater rivers, draining a vast, nutrient-poor lowland forest catchment where leaching of organic matter — principally humic and fulvic acids from fallen leaves and decomposing vegetation — stains the water a deep amber-brown and drives pH to extreme acidity. The streams and creeks where C. condei is found are slow-moving to nearly still, heavily shaded, and chemically very soft and acidic, with pH values in the wild as low as 4.0–5.0 recorded by collectors.

Water temperatures in the region are warm and relatively stable, typically in the 73–77 °F range. Oxygen levels in blackwater habitats can be low, and the benthopelagic habits attributed to the species by FishBase suggest it occupies a range of depths in the water column rather than being strictly bottom-dwelling. Habitat structure includes submerged roots, leaf litter accumulations, and dense marginal vegetation typical of Amazonian blackwater margins.

Feeding

Charax condei is a micropredator. In the wild its diet encompasses smaller fishes and aquatic invertebrates — the twin staples of the Characinae guild. The genus Charax as a whole is defined by its predatory dentition and body plan, and C. condei is no exception: the exposed, interlocking teeth are adapted for seizing and holding slippery prey rather than crushing hard food items.

In the aquarium, where the species has occasionally been kept by specialists, a diet of live or frozen small invertebrates — bloodworm, brine shrimp, Daphnia — would be appropriate as a base, supplemented by small live or frozen fish if the keeper wishes to replicate wild feeding. Like many predatory small characids it may initially refuse prepared dry foods, though some individuals can be weaned onto small pellets over time with patience. Its small adult size means prey items must be correspondingly small.

Mating

No aquarium spawning of Charax condei has been documented in the published literature or hobby record accessible as of this writing, and the species' reproductive behaviour has not been studied in the wild in detail. By analogy with closely related Characinae — and with the broader Characidae — C. condei almost certainly reproduces as an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care, the ancestral mode for the family.

In typical characid fashion, spawning would involve one or more males pursuing a ripe female through fine-leaved vegetation or other spawning substrate, with small numbers of semi-adhesive or non-adhesive eggs released and fertilised in the water column or among plant matter. The adults would take no further interest in eggs or fry. Blackwater conditions — very soft, warm, acidic water with minimal dissolved solids — would likely be necessary to trigger spawning in captivity, as is the case for many Rio Negro endemics.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Charax condei has, to the best of available records, not yet been achieved or at least not documented in accessible hobby or scientific literature. The species is rarely encountered in the trade, and its precise aquarium requirements remain poorly understood.

For keepers attempting to breed it, the blackwater specialist approach would apply: a soft, very acidic breeding tank (pH 4.5–5.5, conductivity near zero, temperature around 77–79 °F) matured with peat or Indian almond leaves to replicate the humic environment of the Rio Negro, with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops as egg substrate. Eggs would be expected to be small, and fry similarly tiny at hatching — first foods would need to be infusoria-scale before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. As with other small blackwater characids, patience and pristine water quality would be essential.

In the aquarium

Charax condei is a specialist fish encountered only rarely in the hobby. Its combination of small size, predatory behaviour toward very small tankmates, and extreme blackwater chemistry requirements place it firmly outside the mainstream trade, and aquarists interested in it are most likely to find it through specialist importers dealing in Rio Negro oddities.

A dedicated blackwater biotope setup is the most appropriate environment: very soft, highly acidic water (pH 4.0–5.5), warm temperature (73–77 °F), low light, tannin-stained from dried leaves or peat filtration, and modest flow. The species is reported to be shoaling in behaviour, and keeping a group of six or more would provide more natural dynamics and reduce inter-specimen stress. Tankmates must be chosen carefully — anything small enough to be eaten will be, and very delicate species may be stressed by the fish's active, predatory nature. Other Rio Negro blackwater specialists of comparable size — small Corydoras, pencilfish, or hatchetfish — could be compatible if not small enough to be prey. It is emphatically not a community fish for a general planted tank.

Conservation

Charax condei has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; its conservation status is listed as Not Evaluated (NE) as of mid-2026. No formal population assessment or threat analysis has been published for the species.

Its known distribution is restricted to the Rio Negro basin, and while the Rio Negro watershed is vast, its blackwater tributaries and smaller creek systems are subject to the broad pressures affecting Amazonian freshwater biodiversity: forest clearance in upstream catchments, changes in hydrology and water chemistry from land conversion, and — at a larger scale — the emerging threat of climate-driven changes to rainfall patterns and river flow. The species' rarity in both the wild record and the aquarium trade means baseline population data are lacking. Given its apparent endemism to a single river basin and its dependence on intact blackwater habitat, a precautionary approach to collection and trade would be warranted pending any formal assessment.
