Cheirodontops geayi is a small characid, reaching about 1.5 in standard length, that ranges across the Orinoco basin of Colombia and Venezuela. It inhabits clear and blackwater rivers and streams from mountain foothills to lowland plains, moving altitudinally in response to seasonal flood cycles and congregating in large shoals year-round. Described by Leonard P. Schultz in 1944 from the Río Guárico drainage of Aragua state, Venezuela, the species bears the name of the French naturalist and pharmacist Martin François Geay, who collected natural history specimens in Venezuela around the turn of the twentieth century. The IUCN assessed it as Least Concern in November 2020, finding the population stable and well distributed across protected and unprotected Orinoco tributaries.

Taxonomy & naming

Cheirodontops geayi was described by Leonard P. Schultz in 1944 in his monographic treatment of Venezuelan characins, published in the Proceedings of the United States National Museum (vol. 95, no. 3181, pp. 235–367). The type locality is the Río Guárico and its tributaries between San Sebastián and San Casimiro in Aragua state, Venezuela. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (California Academy of Sciences) lists the valid name as Cheirodontops geayi Schultz, 1944; the authority is not parenthesized because the species has always been placed in Cheirodontops.

Cheirodontops is a monotypic or near-monotypic genus within the subfamily Cheirodontinae (family Characidae). The cheirodontines are a diverse group of small tetras distributed across South America, and the genus is distinguished from closely related genera by details of the premaxilla, dentition, and scales. In field guides and the aquarium trade, Cheirodontops geayi is sometimes grouped loosely with the many small, silvery schooling tetras of the Orinoco basin rather than assigned a vernacular name of its own.

Morphology

Cheirodontops geayi is a slender, laterally compressed characid. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 1.5 in, making it a small species even by tetra standards, though one source suggests individuals can occasionally approach larger sizes under optimal conditions. The anal fin is distinctive, with 23–25 soft rays — an elevated count that aids identification. The body is benthopelagic in habit and typical of the cheirodontine form: small, torpedo-shaped, with a forked tail and a small adipose fin.

Like most members of its subfamily, the species is essentially silvery, with the flanks reflecting light and often showing a subtle lateral stripe or iridescent sheen depending on lighting conditions and mood. There is no bold colour pattern comparable to better-known hobbyist tetras. Females are presumably more full-bodied when gravid, as is typical for characids of this size, but detailed accounts of external sexual dimorphism in the published literature are limited.

Habitat

Cheirodontops geayi occurs throughout the Orinoco River basin in Colombia and Venezuela. The IUCN assessment documents its presence in the Río Guárico and Aragua tributaries in Venezuela and across major Orinoco tributaries including the Apure, Arauca, Meta, Guaviare, Ventuari, and Orocopiche river systems. The species is also recorded from within the Parque Nacional Natural Sierra de La Macarena in Colombia.

Taphorn's comprehensive 1992 treatment of Apure River characins establishes the species as most common in clear and blackwater rivers and streams with well-conserved, structurally heterogeneous substrates — a mix of gravel, sand, leaf litter, and submerged wood that provides both cover and foraging opportunities. It inhabits mountains and piedmonts as well as lowland lagoons and rivers. The IUCN notes that it is an altitudinal migrant, moving between elevational zones seasonally, and congregates in shoals year-round. Annual rainfall patterns drive its reproductive phenology directly: the species spawns in synchrony with the onset of the first rains.

Feeding

Cheirodontops geayi is carnivorous. FishBase documents a diet that includes microcrustaceans, aquatic and terrestrial insects, seeds, and fruits — a broad opportunistic strategy consistent with the Orinoco floodplain's seasonal availability of food. The inclusion of seeds and fruits suggests the species forages near the water surface and exploits allochthonous inputs during inundation periods, when flooded forest delivers terrestrial organic matter directly into the water column.

In the aquarium, small schooling characids of this type typically adapt readily to commercial micro-pellets and crushed flake, with frozen or live Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, and micro-worms providing good supplemental nutrition. The natural diet's emphasis on animal protein suggests live and frozen foods should form a meaningful proportion of the captive diet to maintain condition.

Mating

Cheirodontops geayi breeds on an annual cycle strongly tied to seasonal hydrology. FishBase notes that reproduction coincides with the first rains of the wet season — a trigger common to many Orinoco basin characins that respond to rising water levels, falling water temperatures, and diluting conductivity as signal cues. The species is congregatory year-round, living in shoals, and the mating period presumably involves group spawning events rather than prolonged territorial pair bonding.

As a member of the Cheirodontinae, the species almost certainly employs the egg-scattering strategy typical of the subfamily: males and females come together briefly, releasing eggs and milt into open water or over fine-leaved vegetation with no courtship structure beyond the spawning rush itself. No specialized spawning behaviour unique to Cheirodontops has been described in the available literature.

Breeding

FishBase records a remarkable fecundity for Cheirodontops geayi, with females capable of producing up to 8,400 eggs — an exceptionally high figure for a fish of this size. This large egg number, combined with a one-year generation time and synchrony with seasonal rainfall, suggests a life-history strategy oriented toward producing many small, fast-maturing offspring in pulse breeding events rather than investing in a smaller brood.

The eggs are almost certainly adhesive, typical of cheirodontine tetras, and are scattered among fine-leaved vegetation or deposited over sandy substrates during spawning. No parental care has been described. In captivity, breeding has not been widely reported in the hobby literature, but the seasonal rainfall cue can be mimicked by cool, soft water changes to trigger spawning. Fry would be expected to be small and require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food as first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii.

In the aquarium

Cheirodontops geayi is not an established hobby fish and is rarely if ever available in the trade, where it lacks both a common name and a profile in mainstream aquarium literature. Its natural habitat in clear and blackwater Orinoco streams offers a template for captive conditions: soft to moderately soft, slightly acidic to neutral water, temperatures in the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius, and subdued or dappled lighting. Structurally complex décor with fine-leaved plants, driftwood, and leaf litter would suit a species that associates with heterogeneous substrates in the wild.

As a small, shoaling characid it should be kept in groups of at least eight to ten individuals, with peaceful, similarly sized tankmates. Its carnivorous tendencies make it unsuitable with very small invertebrates, but it poses no threat to fish of comparable size. Any specimens reaching hobbyists are likely wild-caught, given the absence of an established breeding trade; sustainably sourced, tank-bred stock would be preferable if available.

Conservation

Cheirodontops geayi was assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in 2022 and dated 20 November 2020. The assessment estimates a population of more than 10,000 mature individuals, with a stable population trend. The species' broad distribution across multiple major Orinoco tributaries in both Colombia and Venezuela, and its occurrence within at least one protected area (Parque Nacional Natural Sierra de La Macarena), provide a degree of resilience.

Nevertheless, the IUCN assessment identifies a substantial list of threats across the species' range: agriculture and livestock grazing causing habitat degradation and sedimentation, oil and gas drilling, mining operations, dam construction, water abstraction, and pollution. These pressures are chronic across the Orinoco basin and represent long-term risks to the clean, heterogeneous river habitats on which the species depends. The generation time of one year means populations can in principle recover quickly from local depletions, but cumulative habitat loss in the Orinoco lowlands remains a concern for this and many other Orinoco basin characins.
