Astyanax scintillans was described by George S. Myers in 1928. The valid name is recorded by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as Astyanax scintillans Myers, 1928; the authority is unparenthesised because the species was placed in Astyanax at description and has remained there. The genus Astyanax belongs to the family Characidae and is one of the most diverse vertebrate genera known, with well over 150 described species distributed across North, Central, and South America.
The specific epithet scintillans is Latin for 'sparkling' or 'glittering', likely an allusion to the silvery sheen or iridescent scale reflections common to many small characids in this group. The genus name Astyanax derives from Greek mythology — Astyanax was the son of Hector of Troy — and has been applied to the genus since its founding. No subspecies are currently recognised.
Morphology
Astyanax scintillans is a diminutive characid, with FishBase recording a maximum standard length of 1 in. Like most small Astyanax, it is a slender, laterally compressed fish with a relatively large eye, a terminal mouth, and the characteristic adipose fin shared across most characiform fishes. Its confirmed presence in Colombia (Orinoco drainage) is noted in the regional fish checklist by Álvarez-León et al. (2013).
The broader Orinoco basin encompasses a wide range of habitat types — blackwater and whitewater tributaries, flooded savannas (llanos), gallery forests, and major river channels — but insufficient field data exist to characterise which habitats Astyanax scintillans preferentially occupies. General care for small Orinoco-basin Astyanax applies: a well-filtered, modestly planted aquarium, water in the tropical range, fine-grained foods, and a shoal of conspecifics to reduce timidity.
