Taxonomy & naming
Chrysobrycon eliasi was described by Vanegas-Ríos, Azpelicueta & Ortega in 2011, with the type locality given as a creek in the río Madre de Dios basin, Tambopata, Peru. It is the smallest species known within the genus Chrysobrycon at the time of its description, and is placed in the tribe Xenurobryconini — a lineage within the Stevardiinae subfamily of Characidae sometimes referred to as glandulocaudines. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid name as Chrysobrycon eliasi Vanegas-Ríos, Azpelicueta & Ortega, 2011.
Xenurobryconini are characterised by a battery of male secondary sexual structures not seen in most characins, including a secretory gill gland, bony hooks on the fin rays, and caudal-peduncle scales modified into a pouch-like structure. These traits, together with evidence from spermatozoa morphology, indicate internal insemination — a derived reproductive mode rare among teleosts. Chrysobrycon eliasi fits squarely within this framework, bearing all the diagnostic characters of the tribe.
Morphology
Chrysobrycon eliasi is a small, slender characid; FishBase records a maximum standard length of 1.5 in in males and 1.5 in in females, making females slightly larger than males in linear terms — an inversion of the pattern seen in many sexually dimorphic fishes. This compact size is notable even within the genus: the original description identified it as the smallest Chrysobrycon then known.
Males are distinguished by the suite of features common to xenurobryconine males: a gill gland located on the gill arch (thought to produce chemical signals during courtship), small bony hooks on the rays of the anal and other fins, and modified scales on the caudal peduncle forming a pocket-like structure associated with sperm transfer. Beyond these secondary characters, the species is a typical slender, laterally compressed characid. Detailed external colour notes from field material are sparse in available literature.
Habitat
The original description places Chrysobrycon eliasi in dark-water forest creeks at elevations of 689–820 ft within the río Madre de Dios basin near Tambopata, south-eastern Peru. The recorded habitat is characterised by slightly acidic water (pH 5.8–6.2), soft substrata of sand and clay, abundant fallen leaves, and closed-canopy primary forest casting shade over the stream. FishBase also records its occurrence in the río Manuripe drainage, which flows into the upper Madeira system, slightly extending the known range within Amazonian Peru.
The tannin-stained, leaf-littered creek environment — low pH, low conductivity, dim light — is typical of the Amazonian piedmont forest streams that harbour many small, cryptic characids. Such habitats are seasonally affected by rainfall-driven fluctuations in flow and water chemistry, though specific seasonal data for this species are not published.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study exists for Chrysobrycon eliasi. By analogy with congeners and other small forest-stream xenurobryconines, the species is likely a micro-predator or opportunistic omnivore feeding on small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and terrestrial insects falling onto the water surface — supplemented with organic debris and microalgae.
In the aquarium, closely related small glandulocaudines generally accept fine live and frozen foods (micro-worms, Artemia nauplii, Daphnia) and will take high-quality micro-pellets or crushed flake, though the species is rarely encountered in the trade and practical husbandry data are limited.
Mating
Chrysobrycon eliasi belongs to a clade characterised by internal insemination, and the male's gill gland and modified caudal scales are understood to play roles in chemical communication and sperm transfer during courtship. This distinguishes xenurobryconines from the majority of characins, which practise external fertilisation.
Courting behaviour has not been formally described for this species, but in related xenurobryconines males use the gill gland to deliver pheromones that stimulate females during close-proximity courtship. Sperm is transferred to the female, who retains it and may fertilise eggs over an extended period. The bony fin hooks typical of males in the tribe are thought to assist in maintaining contact during mating rather than serving as weapons.
Breeding
No detailed captive-breeding account exists for Chrysobrycon eliasi. Based on the reproductive biology of related xenurobryconines, it is likely an egg-scattering spawner that deposits adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants or leaf litter, with fertilisation secured internally before spawning. Parental care is not reported in the tribe.
For aquarists attempting the species, conditions mimicking the type locality — soft, slightly acidic water (pH around 6.0), dark tannin-stained water, dim lighting, and fine-leaved plant cover or dried leaf litter on the substrate — would represent a logical starting point. The species' small size suggests that fry, if observed, would require very fine first foods such as infusoria or rotifers.
In the aquarium
Chrysobrycon eliasi is not established in the aquarium hobby. As a small, dark-water forest-stream characid from a specific Peruvian drainage, it is unlikely to appear in the general trade, and virtually no husbandry records are published. Were it kept, the species' origin points toward a soft, acidic, well-shaded setup with a dark substrate, dried leaves, and minimal water movement — conditions that replicate its blackwater forest-creek habitat.
Close relatives in the Xenurobryconini are peaceful micro-fish best kept in small groups with similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates. Given the internal insemination system and the female's capacity to store sperm, groups rather than strict pairs may be appropriate for breeding attempts. Until captive-bred stock becomes available, this remains a species of scientific rather than hobbyist interest.
Conservation
Chrysobrycon eliasi is assessed by the IUCN as Data Deficient (DD). The designation reflects the very limited information available on its population size, range extent, and trends rather than a known absence of threat. The species is known from a small number of localities in south-eastern Peru's Madre de Dios and Manuripe drainages — a region that is subject to expanding gold-mining activity, deforestation, and associated sedimentation that degrades the clear, leaf-littered forest streams these fishes depend on.
As a small, localised creek fish with a restricted documented range, Chrysobrycon eliasi is potentially vulnerable to the same pressures affecting biodiversity across the southern Amazonian piedmont. More systematic survey work is needed to determine whether its distribution is genuinely narrow or simply under-collected, and to assess population status with enough confidence to move it out of the Data Deficient category.
