Chrysobrycon hesperus was originally described by James E. Böhlke in 1958, with the type locality in the Ecuadorian Amazon, part of the greater Napo River drainage. The species was later placed in the genus Chrysobrycon, which was erected by Stanley H. Weitzman and Naércio A. Menezes in 1998 in their monograph on the phylogeny and classification of Neotropical fishes. Because the species was moved from its original genus to Chrysobrycon after the original description, the authority is written in parentheses: (Böhlke, 1958). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the governing authority for the valid name.
Chrysobrycon belongs to the family Stevardiidae (subfamily Stevardiinae) within the broader Characidae sensu lato, a large and diverse assemblage of Neotropical characids. The genus is characterised by features of the jaw dentition and body squamation that distinguish it from allied genera. At the time of description, few species were assigned to Chrysobrycon, and it remains a small, specialist genus within the tetra lineage.
Morphology
Chrysobrycon hesperus is a moderately slender characid reaching approximately 3 in standard length in males and unsexed specimens; it is a relatively small species within its genus. Like most characids it is laterally compressed with the characteristic forked caudal fin and a small adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal. General care principles for small Stevardiinae tetras — soft to moderately hard tropical freshwater, temperatures in the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius, a varied invertivore diet, and a planted tank with open swimming space — provide the most reasonable starting point in the absence of species-specific data.
Aquarists who obtain specimens should keep them in a species-appropriate group and observe behaviour carefully, as direct experience with this fish in captivity is effectively undocumented.
