Compsura gorgonae is a small characid reaching roughly 1 in standard length, endemic to the rivers of Panama — both the Pacific and Atlantic versants. First collected from a small pool below the spillway of a reservoir dam at Gorgona in the Panama Canal Zone, it remains one of the lesser-studied members of its family, known primarily through museum records and database aggregations rather than dedicated field studies. Taxonomy & naming

Compsura gorgonae was originally described by Barton Warren Evermann and Edmund Lee Goldsborough in 1909 on the basis of material collected from the Panama Canal Zone; the valid authority is rendered with parentheses — (Evermann & Goldsborough, 1909) — indicating the species has been reassigned from the genus under which it was first placed. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises Compsura gorgonae as the valid name, and Compsura is the sole genus in which this species is placed.

The genus Compsura is a small characid lineage within the diverse family Characidae, the true characins, which spans Central and South America as well as Africa. Compsura gorgonae is the only species assigned to the genus in major databases, making it monotypic and geographically restricted to Panama. Its precise phylogenetic placement within Characidae has not been resolved with the same resolution as the larger, more commercially prominent genera, reflecting the general under-study of smaller, non-ornamental Central American characids.
