Creagrutus atratus was formally described by Richard P. Vari and Andrew S. Harold in 2001, in their monograph on the Neotropical fish genera Creagrutus Günther and Piabina Reinhardt published in Smithsonian Contributions to Zoology (volume 613). That work constituted a comprehensive phylogenetic study and revision of all cis-Andean species, placing Creagrutus atratus within a large and morphologically cohesive genus now containing well over 70 described species. The valid name as recognised by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Creagrutus atratus Vari & Harold, 2001.
The type locality is the Río Caqueza, a tributary of the Río Negro approximately 1 mi upstream of Caqueza village, within the Meta drainage. The genus Creagrutus belongs to the family Characidae and to the order Characiformes. FishBase places Creagrutus atratus in the family Stevardiidae, reflecting ongoing uncertainty about the internal arrangement of characid lineages; the valid family assignment recognised here follows the broader Characidae in the sense of the primary Catalog of Fishes authority. The name Creagrutus derives from Greek roots carrying the sense of tearing or ripping flesh, a reference to the characteristic dentition of the genus.
Morphology
Creagrutus atratus is a small, elongate characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 3 in, based on the largest male or unsexed specimen recorded in FishBase. The body plan is typical of the genus: moderately slender and subcylindrical anteriorly, laterally compressed through the caudal peduncle, with the characteristic Characidae features of an adipose fin and a well-developed lateral line. Details of squamation, meristics, and dentition that define the species within Creagrutus are documented in the 2001 Vari and Harold revision and are the primary basis for distinguishing it from congeners.

Like many cis-Andean Creagrutus, the species is presumed to be cryptically coloured — silvery with dark pigmentation along the dorsal surface and a lateral stripe, consistent with a benthopelagic fish inhabiting clear piedmont streams. Habitat
Creagrutus atratus is endemic to Colombia, where it is known from the piedmont sections of Andean foothill rivers draining into the Orinoco basin, including rivers Upía, Meta, and Arauca. The type locality is the Río Caqueza in the Meta drainage. The IUCN assessment gives an area of occupancy (AOO) of 1,234 mi² and an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 23,99 mi², reflecting a restricted but not negligible footprint across the western Orinoco piedmont.
The species inhabits freshwater streams, creeks, and rivers in piedmont and montane foothill zones, favouring sites with clear water, slow to moderate currents, and varied substrates including mud, sand, and gravel. The IUCN assessment notes that it probably occurs within the boundaries of Chingaza Protected Area, which encompasses headwater drainages of the Meta basin. Mating

Based on reproductive patterns across the genus and the broader Characidae, spawning is inferred to be a seasonal activity linked to the Andean rainy season, and the IUCN assessment notes that reproduction is probably periodic in response to seasonal hydrology. Males of many small characids develop small hooks on the anal-fin rays during the breeding period, and similar structures have been noted in related Creagrutus species; these likely play a role in close-contact courtship or spawning behaviour.
The IUCN assessment estimates a population of more than 10,000 mature individuals with a stable trend, suggesting that despite limited habitat, the species reproduces successfully in the wild. Given the seasonal nature of Andean piedmont streams, spawning activity presumably intensifies during rising water levels when aquatic invertebrate production peaks and dispersal opportunities across flooded habitats increase.
Breeding
Creagrutus atratus has not been bred in captivity under documented aquarium conditions, and detailed breeding data are absent from the published record. The genus Creagrutus belongs to Characiformes, and small characids in this group are generally egg-scattering open spawners that deposit adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs over fine substrate or vegetation with no subsequent parental care. Eggs hatch within a few days at tropical temperatures, and larvae are initially small and demanding of fine first foods.
For any aquarist wishing to attempt breeding, the approach for small Andean characids generally involves conditioning adults with live and frozen invertebrates, providing a well-planted or moss-rich spawning environment, and removing adults after spawning to prevent egg predation. The seasonal reproductive cue in wild piedmont populations — linked to the onset of the rainy season and rising temperatures — can often be simulated by gradual temperature increases and water changes with slightly softer water.
In the aquarium
Creagrutus atratus is essentially absent from the mainstream ornamental fish trade and is not an established aquarium species. It has no widely used common name, and wild-caught specimens would derive from Colombian Orinoco-drainage localities that are not a significant source of ornamental fish. For the rare aquarist who encounters it, the species' small adult size (3 in SL) and benthopelagic habits suggest it would fare well in a modestly sized, well-filtered aquarium with clear, well-oxygenated water, a fine sandy substrate, some current, and overhead cover from floating or rooted plants.
Water parameters consistent with its Andean piedmont origins should be provided: temperatures likely in the range of 68–79 °F reflecting the cooler, well-oxygenated foothill streams, and a pH in the neutral to slightly acidic range appropriate for soft Andean headwaters. A peaceful community of similarly sized South American fishes would be suitable tankmates. As a schooling or group-living characid, it would benefit from being kept in numbers of six or more rather than singly or in pairs.
Conservation
Creagrutus atratus is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List under criteria B2ab(iii), based on an assessment published in 2021 from a 2020 evaluation. The area of occupancy is calculated at 1,234 mi², falling below the B2 threshold of 2,0 mi², and the species is considered to occur at only two threat-based locations, with continuing decline in habitat quality (criterion b(iii)). Despite these criteria triggering a Vulnerable listing, the population trend is considered stable and the number of mature individuals is estimated to exceed 10,000.
The principal threats identified in the IUCN assessment are deforestation of headwaters and riparian corridors, agricultural and agro-industrial water extraction, discharge of untreated urban and agricultural effluents, dam construction, and stream canalization. These pressures are characteristic of rapidly developing Andean piedmont regions in Colombia. The species may receive incidental protection within Chingaza National Natural Park, whose headwaters fall within the Meta drainage. Because it has no commercial value in the ornamental trade, captive conservation programmes are not a realistic option; the species' future depends on the integrity of Colombian piedmont freshwater habitats.
