Creagrutus affinis was described by Franz Steindachner in 1880. The genus Creagrutus belongs to the family Characidae and encompasses a diverse assemblage of small, often cryptically similar characids distributed across Central and South America. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) treats Creagrutus affinis Steindachner, 1880 as the valid name.
A major systematic revision of the trans-Andean members of the genus by Harold and Vari recognised C. affinis as one of eight species in the trans-Andean species group — those occurring on the Pacific slope and in the Caribbean drainages west of the Andes. That monograph forms the primary taxonomic reference for the species and defines its distributional boundaries. The genus name Creagrutus has been applied to over forty species across its range, and differentiating species often requires close attention to meristic counts, body proportions, and pigmentation patterns that are not obvious in the field.
Morphology
Creagrutus affinis reaches approximately 3 in standard length (SL) based on FishBase records, placing it in the mid-size range for the genus. Like other Creagrutus, it is a slender, fusiform characid with the typical structure of a rheophilic, insectivorous small fish — a pointed snout, a moderately large eye, and a streamlined body adapted for life in flowing water.
The coloration is generally silvery with darker dorsal pigmentation, a pattern common across the trans-Andean Creagrutus. Distinguishing C. affinis from congeners requires examination of scale counts, fin-ray counts, and body proportions; field identification on colour alone is unreliable. Detailed meristic data appear in the Harold and Vari revision, which remains the definitive morphological reference for this species group.
Habitat
Creagrutus affinis occupies a broad swathe of trans-Andean river systems, spanning both Pacific-slope and Caribbean-draining waters in Colombia and Panama. In Colombia it occurs in the Magdalena River basin, the Baudo and San Juan rivers of Chocó Department, and coastal basins of the Pacific slope. A documented range extension places it in the río San Jorge basin in Sucre, Colombia, confirming a wider geographic spread within Caribbean-draining waters than previously recognised. In Panama it has been recorded from the Bayano, Tuira, and Chagres systems, the last on the Atlantic slope.
These habitats span lowland streams to foothill rivers. The species appears tolerant of varied lotic conditions across this corridor where the Andean cordillera creates biogeographic filters between Atlantic and Pacific fish faunas. Historical biogeographic work on Central American freshwater fishes places C. affinis among the species that connect South American and Central American ichthyofaunas across the Panamanian land bridge.
Feeding
Creagrutus affinis is presumed to be an insectivorous or broadly carnivorous micro-predator, consistent with the feeding ecology documented across the genus. Small Creagrutus species in flowing-water habitats typically take aquatic invertebrates, terrestrial insects that fall onto the water surface, and small crustaceans.

Its small size (under 3 in SL), peaceful schooling behaviour predicted for the genus, and insectivorous diet would in principle make it a manageable fish for a species aquarium oriented toward Neotropical stream biotopes, but access is limited to occasional wild-caught specimens obtained by specialist collectors.
Any aquarist working with this or related Creagrutus species would be well advised to replicate lotic conditions — good water flow, well-oxygenated water, a substrate of fine gravel or sand — and to offer live or frozen invertebrate prey. Water conditions across its natural range span soft to moderately mineralised, neutral to slightly acidic parameters typical of Neotropical lowland rivers, though no specific physico-chemical data for its exact collection sites have been published.
Conservation
Creagrutus affinis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment completed in April 2019. The Least Concern rating reflects the species' relatively wide distribution across multiple river systems in Colombia and Panama, which buffers it against localised declines.
Nonetheless, many of the river systems it inhabits — particularly the Chocó coastal rivers and Magdalena tributaries — are subject to ongoing pressures including deforestation, agricultural runoff, and artisanal mining that affect water quality and stream integrity throughout the western Colombian lowlands. The range extension into the río San Jorge basin documented in recent literature suggests the species may be more widespread than older records indicated, which is generally a positive sign for its conservation standing.
