Taxonomy & naming
Diapoma speculiferum was described by Edward Drinker Cope in 1894, with the type locality given as the Rio Jacuí in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The original description noted the metallic coloration and certain features of the opercular region. Cope published additional notes on the species later the same year. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) recognises Diapoma speculiferum Cope, 1894 as the valid name.
The genus Diapoma belongs to the family Stevardiidae within the order Characiformes. Stevardiidae was elevated to family rank by Mirande (2010) from what had previously been treated as part of the broad family Characidae; the family is characterised in part by the presence of internal insemination, documented in the genus Diapoma by Burns and colleagues (1995). Earlier comprehensive treatments of South American characoids by Géry (1977) placed Diapoma within the wider Characidae sensu lato. Weitzman and Menezes (1998) examined the relationships of Diapoma within the group. The subfamilial assignment is Diapominae.
Morphology
Diapoma speculiferum is a small fish, with FishBase recording a maximum standard length of 2 in. The body is slender and fusiform, the typical shape of a small schooling characid adapted to flowing water. The opercle and subopercle are notably elongated posteriorly, a character mentioned in the original description by Cope and one of the distinguishing features of the genus.
