Diapoma thauma is a small, slender characid from the Rio Jacuí basin of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, reaching around 2 in standard length. Described only in 2011, it is one of four species in the genus Diapoma — a group of diminutive tetras occupying cool subtropical rivers in southern South America. Despite its modest size and unassuming appearance, it carries Near Threatened status on the IUCN Red List, a reflection of its restricted distribution and the pressures facing southern Brazilian freshwater systems.

Taxonomy & naming

Diapoma thauma was formally described by Naércio A. Menezes and Stanley H. Weitzman in 2011. The genus Diapoma was established to accommodate a small cluster of slender, small-bodied characids from subtropical river systems in southern South America; at the time of description, the genus comprised four species, with D. thauma being one of them. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) is the governing authority for the valid name.

The specific epithet thauma is derived from the Greek word for "wonder" or "marvel", an allusion — presumably to the authors — to some noteworthy character of the species. The genus name Diapoma combines Greek elements referring to a covering or lid, though the precise anatomical referent of the genus name relates to cranial or opercular features noted in the original diagnosis. The family Characidae, as broadly understood, is a vast assemblage of freshwater fishes across South and Central America and Africa; Diapoma sits within the Stevardiinae, a subtribe of small characids concentrated in upland and subtropical South American drainages.

Morphology

Diapoma thauma is a small, elongate characid reaching approximately 2 in standard length (SL). Like other members of Diapoma, it has the slender body and relatively small fins typical of the genus, distinguishing it from the deeper-bodied tetras more familiar to aquarists. The species is silvery in overall body tone, with the lateral-line pores and fine scalation characteristic of the subfamily.

Detailed morphological data beyond size and general body form are sparse in the available literature for this species specifically. The Diapoma genus is diagnosed from related stevardiine characids by combinations of osteological and soft-tissue characters described in the original revision. As with many recently described small characids from southern Brazil, external distinguishing features between congeners may be subtle, and reliable identification often depends on meristic or anatomical examination.

Habitat

Diapoma thauma is known from freshwater tributaries of the Rio Jacuí basin in Rio Grande do Sul state, southern Brazil. The Rio Jacuí is the principal river of the Patos Lagoon system, draining the central uplands of Rio Grande do Sul before emptying into Lagoa dos Patos near the state capital Porto Alegre. The tributaries within which this species occurs are cool, subtropical, freshwater streams.

FishBase records a temperature of 75 °F and a pH of 7 for the species, values consistent with the temperate-to-subtropical stream conditions of the Rio Grande do Sul uplands. The region experiences marked seasonal temperature variation compared to the tropical Brazilian interior, and stream fish communities here differ significantly from those of Amazonian drainages. The restricted range — confined to a single river basin in a single Brazilian state — is the ecological fact most consequential for the species' conservation standing.

Feeding

Direct observational data on the feeding behaviour of D. thauma in the wild are sparse. In captivity — where the species is rarely kept — small characids of this type would be expected to accept fine-grade prepared foods, micro-pellets, and small live or frozen invertebrates such as Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, and Cyclops. A varied diet with a live or frozen component is likely to support the best condition and colouration.

Mating

Diapoma thauma, as an oviparous characid, is presumed to follow the egg-scattering mode of reproduction typical of most members of the family Characidae. In the egg-scattering reproductive guild, males and females broadcast adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants or over substrate, without establishing or defending a nest site. Spawning is typically initiated by the male pursuing and nudging the female, with eggs and milt released simultaneously in brief lateral embraces.

No specific published observations on courtship behaviour in D. thauma are available in the accessible literature. By analogy with related stevardiine genera, males in breeding condition may develop minute contact organs (bony hooks) on fin rays, a feature seen in other Stevardiinae that is thought to function in clasping the female during spawning contact. Seasonal and photoperiod cues likely regulate breeding timing in the subtropical Rio Jacuí basin.

Breeding

Diapoma thauma is recorded as oviparous in FishBase, consistent with the egg-scattering mode shared by the vast majority of characids. In this reproductive strategy, adhesive eggs are scattered among fine-leaved plants or deposited over substrate, after which both parents disperse without providing any parental care. The eggs are vulnerable to being consumed by the adults themselves, a common characid trait.

No captive breeding reports for D. thauma have been located in the accessible hobby or scientific literature. General guidance for breeding comparable small subtropical characids would involve conditioning adults on live and frozen foods, providing fine-leaved plants or spawning mops as an egg substrate, and removing adults or transferring eggs to a rearing vessel after spawning to prevent predation. Incubation temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius would reflect the species' native subtropical habitat.

In the aquarium

Diapoma thauma is essentially unknown in the ornamental fish trade and is not currently kept or commercially available to hobbyists in any meaningful quantity. The species has not been the subject of hobby articles or specialist fishkeeping coverage, and practical husbandry data are therefore absent from the literature.

Based on its size (2 in SL), habitat (cool subtropical freshwater streams at around 75 °F, pH 7), and its classification as a small, schooling characid, the species would in principle be suitable for a well-filtered, moderately cool freshwater aquarium of modest dimensions. By analogy with other Diapoma and related small stevardiine tetras, a peaceful community of similarly sized fishes, subdued lighting, and fine-leaved planting would represent appropriate conditions. The rarity and conservation status of the species make wild-caught acquisition problematic; any captive interest would be best served by captive-bred specimens should these become available.

Conservation

Diapoma thauma is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment confirmed in the 2022 dataset. The Near Threatened listing reflects the species' restricted distribution — known only from the Rio Jacuí basin in Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil — combined with the ongoing degradation of freshwater habitats across the region. Southern Brazilian river systems face pressures from agricultural run-off, deforestation of riparian zones, river regulation, and urbanisation in the heavily developed Rio Grande do Sul landscape.

A species confined to a single drainage basin has limited resilience to local disturbance; any significant deterioration of water quality or habitat connectivity in the Rio Jacuí tributaries could disproportionately affect the population. The species is not commercially fished or collected for the ornamental trade in any quantity, so harvest pressure is not a significant concern. Improved surveys of its range and abundance within the Jacuí system would strengthen the evidence base for future IUCN assessments.
