Taxonomy & naming

Diapoma tipiaia was described by Luiz R. Malabarba and Stanley H. Weitzman in 2003. It is placed in the genus Diapoma, a small genus of characids in the family Characidae. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name, which carries a parenthetical authority because the species was described in a genus other than the one in which it was originally placed, or to indicate the original authorship in its current combination.

The genus Diapoma accommodates several small, slender characids from South America. Within Characidae, the precise tribal placement of Diapoma has been subject to ongoing phylogenetic revision as molecular and morphological analyses have continued to reshape the family's higher classification — one of the most species-rich vertebrate families on Earth. Feeding
