Taxonomy & naming
Eretmobrycon bayano was described by William L. Fink in 1976, with the type locality recorded as Panama, Bayano River basin, a pool in a small stream. The original description appeared at page 334 of the check-list of freshwater fishes of South and Central America edited by Reis and colleagues; figures 2–4 of that work illustrate the type material. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) treats Eretmobrycon bayano Fink, 1976 as the valid name; the species was formerly placed in the genus Bryconamericus under the combination Bryconamericus bayano before a generic revision assigned it to Eretmobrycon.
The genus Eretmobrycon is a small group of characins centred on Panama and the adjacent Colombian Pacific slope, and E. bayano is its namesake taxon for the Bayano drainage. FishBase has in recent years placed several Eretmobrycon species within the family Stevardiidae following a reclassification of the characid superfamily, but the top-level family field on this site is retained as Characidae in the broad, traditionally recognised sense used by Reis et al. and much of the ichthyological literature.
Morphology
Eretmobrycon bayano is a small, slender characin reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 2 in, based on male or unsexed specimens recorded by FishBase. Like most members of its genus and the broader characid lineage it is laterally compressed, with a fusiform body suited to navigating flowing water. The caudal fin is forked, the dorsal fin short and positioned roughly over the pelvic fins, and the adipose fin is present — the hallmark of the Characidae.
Detailed external colour descriptions for live E. bayano specimens are not widely documented in the published literature available at the time of writing. The genus Eretmobrycon comprises small characins adapted to fast-flowing streams, typically showing the silvery flanks, dark lateral stripe, and reddish or hyaline fin colouration common to many Neotropical stream tetras. The species' small maximum size places it firmly in the micro-tetra size class alongside the better-known small characids of the aquarium hobby.
Habitat
The species is confined to the Upper Bayano River basin in eastern Panama, a river system that drains from the Serranía de San Blas and adjacent highlands eastward toward the Gulf of Panama. The type locality is described as a pool in a small stream within this basin, suggesting the species uses still or slow-moving microhabitats — likely pools, stream margins, and backwaters — within an otherwise fast-draining montane or foothill drainage.
FishBase records the species as a tropical, benthopelagic freshwater fish. Water conditions in Upper Bayano tributaries are typical of clear, nutrient-poor, moderately fast streams draining forested highlands in eastern Panama: warm (likely 72–82 °F), with low to moderate conductivity and a pH in the neutral-to-slightly-acidic range, though no published water-parameter data specifically for E. bayano collection sites is available in the sources reviewed. The Bayano River basin was significantly altered in the 1970s by the impoundment of Lago Bayano, and the species' restriction to the upper basin above that reservoir may reflect a combination of historical range and habitat filtering.
Feeding
No published gut-content or feeding studies are available for Eretmobrycon bayano specifically. Small characins of its body size and habitat type are typically opportunistic omnivores or invertivores, taking small aquatic insects, insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and terrestrial invertebrates that fall to the water surface, with plant material and algae forming a supplementary component of the diet.
In captivity, small-bodied stream tetras of this kind generally accept good-quality flake and micro-pellet foods, with frozen or live Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and similar small invertebrate foods improving condition. Because specific dietary data for E. bayano in the wild are absent from the reviewed sources, aquarium recommendations should be treated as extrapolations from comparable small Neotropical characids rather than species-specific guidance.
Mating

Adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs may settle on vegetation or fine substrate. Until breeding observations for E. bayano are documented, these inferences from related taxa represent the best available working model.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Eretmobrycon bayano appear in the hobby or scientific literature reviewed. The species is not established in the aquarium trade, and accounts of its reproduction in captivity are absent from the sources consulted. Based on the reproductive mode typical of small stream characids in the Stevardiinae and related groups, spawning would most likely take place over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with the adults showing no parental care and readily consuming their own eggs if not separated.
Given the species' IUCN Vulnerable status and absence from regular trade, any future captive-breeding effort would be of genuine conservation value. Eggs of small characids in comparable genera typically hatch within 24–72 hours at tropical temperatures, with fry becoming free-swimming shortly after and requiring very fine first foods such as infusoria or commercial micro-fry preparations. These details remain to be confirmed for E. bayano specifically.
In the aquarium
Eretmobrycon bayano is not an established aquarium fish. No maintenance or husbandry data are recorded on FishBase for the species, and it does not appear in regular ornamental-fish trade channels. Its restricted wild range, vulnerable conservation status, and absence from commercial breeding programmes collectively mean that hobbyists are very unlikely to encounter it.
If specimens were to become available through conservation-focused collection programmes, the husbandry approach appropriate for small Panamanian stream tetras would apply: a well-filtered, oxygenated aquarium with moderate flow, soft to neutral water, subdued lighting with plant cover, and a diet of high-quality small prepared and frozen-live foods. A group of six or more individuals would allow natural schooling behaviour. The species' Vulnerable status underscores that any collection from the wild should be conducted only under appropriate permits and with conservation justification.
Conservation
Eretmobrycon bayano is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List under criterion D2, reflecting a very restricted area of occupancy estimated at fewer than 12 mi². The assessment, finalised on 4 February 2019, notes that the species is restricted to the Upper Bayano River basin in eastern Panama, with no species-specific conservation actions currently directed toward it.
The D2 criterion — applied when a species' area of occupancy is so small that it faces a plausible future threat that could push it to Critically Endangered or Extinct within a very short time — is particularly relevant here because the Upper Bayano basin is a geographically isolated system in a country experiencing deforestation and agricultural encroachment in its eastern lowlands and foothills. The Bayano hydroelectric reservoir, created in the 1970s, already altered the broader drainage; further habitat degradation, stream pollution, or hydrological change in the remaining upper catchment could have rapid and severe consequences for a fish with nowhere else to go. No captive assurance colony or ex-situ programme is known to exist for the species.
