Taxonomy & naming

Eretmobrycon festae was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1898. The type locality is the Vinces River in Ecuador, a tributary of the Guayas drainage on the Pacific slope of South America. The valid name is recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as Eretmobrycon festae (Boulenger, 1898), with parenthetical authority indicating that the species was originally placed in a different genus before transfer to Eretmobrycon.

The genus Eretmobrycon belongs to the family Characidae — a vast assemblage of small to medium neotropical fishes that includes tetras, piranhas, and many other familiar forms. FishBase has also placed this species under the family Stevardiidae as part of recent reclassifications within the characoid complex, reflecting ongoing revision of higher-level characid taxonomy; however, the species article uses Characidae, the broader and longer-established family assignment under which it has historically been treated.

The specific epithet festae honours the Italian naturalist and zoologist Dr Enrico Luigi Festa (1868–1939), who collected extensively in Ecuador and Peru during the late nineteenth century and whose Ecuadorian specimens formed the basis for numerous species descriptions by Boulenger and others from that period.
