Hemigrammus cupreus is a small characid of the middle Amazon basin, known from the Solimões River system of South America. Reaching around 2 in in total length, it carries a coppery sheen that earns it its common name of Shiny Copper Tetra. Like many Hemigrammus species it remains modestly documented in the scientific literature and is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade, making it a fish of interest to specialists and biotope enthusiasts drawn to the blackwater and whitewater habitats of the upper Amazon drainage.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemigrammus cupreus was described by Mary Durbin in 1918, placing it among the characins of the large and diverse genus Hemigrammus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) records the valid name as Hemigrammus cupreus Durbin, 1918; the authority is unparenthesised because the species was described in Hemigrammus, where it remains.

The genus Hemigrammus belongs to the family Characidae, the dominant characid radiation of South America. With well over 70 valid species, Hemigrammus is one of the largest tetra genera, encompassing many of the most familiar small characins in the hobby as well as numerous obscure species known from only a handful of museum specimens. H. cupreus falls into the latter category — a species formally described but not deeply studied, and one for which aquarium-keeping records are scant.

Morphology

Hemigrammus cupreus is a small, laterally compressed tetra reaching approximately 2 in total length, which is typical for mid-sized members of the genus. The common name Shiny Copper Tetra refers to the coppery or brassy iridescence of the body flanks under good lighting, a quality shared with a number of Hemigrammus species that inhabit tannin-stained waters where metallic reflection may serve a signalling role.

Like other Hemigrammus species, it displays the family's characteristic body form: a moderately deep, oval profile, a forked caudal fin, a short adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal, and a well-defined lateral line. Beyond the size and general coppery colouration, detailed meristic or colour-pattern data are sparse in the accessible literature, and the species has not been subject to the photographic documentation that more popular trade tetras receive.

Habitat

Hemigrammus cupreus is recorded from the Solimões River basin, the Brazilian reach of the upper Amazon system above the confluence with the Rio Negro at Manaus. The Solimões and its tributaries include both white-water (várzea) and blackwater environments, with characteristically warm, soft, and often acidic water reflecting the diverse geological substrates of the western Amazon basin.

Biotope data for the broader region indicate water temperatures of roughly 73–86 °F, with many tributary and floodplain habitats featuring soft, acidic to slightly acidic water, abundant leaf litter, submerged woody debris, and dense marginal vegetation. Whether H. cupreus is specifically associated with blackwater or whitewater habitats within the Solimões drainage is not documented in the available literature; most small Hemigrammus species use sheltered marginal and floodplain zones rather than swift main-channel currents.

Feeding

No species-specific feeding study exists for Hemigrammus cupreus, but the diet of small Hemigrammus tetras in Amazonian habitats is well characterised in general terms. These are opportunistic micropredators and omnivores, taking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, zooplankton — along with fallen terrestrial insects and occasional plant matter and algae.

In the aquarium, members of the genus accept standard small-particle prepared foods (flake, micro-pellets) as a staple, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, and bloodworm to maintain condition. A varied diet supports better colouration and breeding readiness in most small tetras.

Mating

No captive breeding account for Hemigrammus cupreus has been recorded in the aquarium literature. The genus Hemigrammus follows the standard characid reproductive guild of non-guarding, open-water or plant-associated egg scatterers, and the same is expected for this species.

Typically in the genus, males are slimmer than gravid females and may show slightly more intense colouration when in spawning condition. Courtship involves brief pursuit of the female into fine-leaved vegetation or open water, where eggs are scattered without pair bonding or site fidelity. Parental care is absent.

Breeding

No breeding report for Hemigrammus cupreus in captivity has been located in the available literature. Based on the reproductive biology of closely related Hemigrammus species, spawning would be expected to follow the egg-scattering pattern typical of the family: adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved aquatic plants or over a substrate, with no parental care and a tendency for adults to consume eggs if not removed.

Incubation periods for Hemigrammus species at typical Amazonian temperatures (75–81 °F) are generally in the range of 24–36 hours, with fry becoming free-swimming within a few days of hatching and requiring very fine first foods such as infusoria or commercial liquid fry food before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. In the aquarium

Hemigrammus cupreus is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade and is not commercially produced at scale, making it a species of interest primarily to biotope aquarists and specialists in Amazonian characins rather than a mainstream hobby fish. When kept, it should be treated as other small, peaceful Hemigrammus: housed in a group of at least six to allow natural schooling behaviour, in a planted or biotope aquarium with soft, slightly acidic water, subdued lighting, and ample open swimming space at mid-water.

Water parameters consistent with the Solimões region — temperatures of 75–81 °F, pH in the soft-acidic range of 5.5–7.0, and low to moderate hardness — are appropriate. Compatible tankmates are other small, peaceful characins, dwarf cichlids, and small catfish typical of the western Amazon. As with all small tetras, avoid aggressive or very boisterous companions that would disrupt the group's cohesion and inhibit natural behaviour.

Conservation

Hemigrammus cupreus has not received a formal IUCN Red List assessment with a published taxon entry accessible through standard search channels. FishBase references a 2021 Data Deficient (DD) designation, reflecting the limited distributional and population data available for this species rather than confirmed threat.

The Solimões basin, which forms the core of its known range, is subject to ongoing pressures common across the western Amazon, including deforestation, agricultural runoff, and large-scale infrastructure development. However, without a formal assessment and systematic survey data, the actual conservation status of H. cupreus remains uncertain. The Data Deficient designation underscores the need for targeted survey work to establish its distributional range and population trends before any meaningful threat analysis can be made.
