Hemigrammus analis is a small, slender characin from the river systems of northern and central South America, collected across a broad arc of Guiana-shield drainages — the Essequibo and Demerara of Guyana, the Apure and broader Orinoco basin of Venezuela, and the Negro and lower Tapajós drainages of Brazil. Described by Mary Durbin in 1909, it belongs to the large, taxonomically complex genus Hemigrammus and reaches around 1.5 in standard length. In the aquarium trade it appears sporadically under the names Anal Tetra and Durbin's Tetra, and it has been assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Hemigrammus analis was described by Mary Durbin in 1909, making it one of the earlier members of a genus that now encompasses well over a hundred species of small South American characins. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, California Academy of Sciences) lists the valid name as Hemigrammus analis Durbin, 1909; no subsequent synonyms are in wide circulation. The genus Hemigrammus belongs to the diverse family Characidae and is united principally by the presence of scales on the caudal fin — a character that separates it from the otherwise similar Hyphessobrycon, though generic boundaries in this group have been repeatedly reworked and some species-level assignments remain provisional in the literature.

The specific epithet analis refers to the anal fin, a character noted in the original description. The common names Anal Tetra and Durbin's Tetra both trace directly to the scientific name and the describer, respectively. In the aquarium hobby the species is infrequently encountered and sometimes confused with other small, silvery Hemigrammus species; reliable identification requires attention to fin and scale characters rather than colour alone.

Feeding

Eggs are small and adhesive; adults will eat both eggs and hatched fry and should be removed after spawning is observed. Hemigrammus analis is a peaceful, active schooling fish suited to a community aquarium with other small, non-aggressive species. A group of six or more is recommended to allow natural schooling behavior and reduce individual stress. The broad natural distribution of this species across blackwater and clearwater Guiana-shield drainages suggests flexibility in water chemistry, though soft, slightly acidic to neutral conditions broadly matching its origin are appropriate: pH in the range of 6.0–7.5, temperatures of 75–81 °F, and low to moderate hardness.

The species is not commonly available in the general aquarium trade and is more likely to be encountered through specialist tetra importers or hobbyist networks. When available, it is an undemanding fish that tolerates a range of conditions within the tropical soft-water parameters typical of Amazon-basin characins. A planted tank with some shading, dark substrate, and gentle filtration shows small silver tetras at their best and matches the dappled, vegetated environments of its native drainages.
