Hemigrammus luelingi is a small, slender tetra from the Peruvian Amazon basin, reaching just 1 in standard length and sharing its iridescent shoulder-and-tail spotting with its better-known relative the Head-and-Taillight Tetra. It was described by ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1964 from a small tributary lake in the Pacaya River system and is named in honour of the German ichthyologist Karl-Heinz Lüling. Though infrequently seen in the hobby outside specialist importers, it presents few husbandry difficulties and rewards patient keepers with a gem-like school of luminous, softwater tetras.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemigrammus luelingi was described by Jacques Géry in 1964, with the type locality given as a small stream connecting the lake 'Zapote Cocha', a floodplain ox-bow in the Pacaya River basin of Peru. Géry placed the species in Hemigrammus, the large characid genus characterised by scaled caudal fins. Some subsequent classifications have placed it in the genus Holopristis — FishBase currently lists it under that name — but the name Hemigrammus luelingi Géry, 1964 remains the combination recognised in broader trade and hobbyist literature pending thorough generic revision, and it is the name anchored by the original description.

The species is closely allied to Hemigrammus ocellifer, the Head-and-Taillight Tetra, from which it is distinguished primarily by the shape of the anterior humeral blotch: in H. luelingi this blotch is rounded and roughly circular, whereas in H. ocellifer it is vertically elongated. The two species overlap geographically in the western Amazon and may be encountered together, making careful identification important for hobbyists acquiring unidentified 'head-and-taillight' stock. Hemigrammus is a diverse and taxonomically unsettled genus within the family Characidae, and species limits across the H. ocellifer group are still being clarified.

Morphology

Hemigrammus luelingi is a slender, laterally compressed tetra with a maximum recorded standard length of 1 in — making it one of the smaller members of the genus. The body form is typical of Hemigrammus: fusiform, with a somewhat pointed snout, large eye, and moderately forked tail. The caudal fin is scaled along its base, a hallmark of the genus.

The colour pattern closely parallels that of H. ocellifer: the most prominent features are a golden-to-copper iridescent blotch on the shoulder just behind the operculum, and a paired iridescent spot above and below the caudal peduncle at the tail base. In good lighting these spots gleam against a translucent silvery-olive body. The anterior humeral spot is rounded rather than elongated — the key character separating this species from the very similar H. ocellifer. Body iridescence and spot intensity are enhanced by dark substrates, dim lighting, and good conditioning; on pale or brightly lit substrates the fish appears washed out.

Habitat

The type locality is a small connecting stream between a floodplain lake ('Zapote Cocha') and the broader Pacaya River drainage in Loreto Department, Peru. The Pacaya River system drains tropical lowland Amazonian forest and feeds into the larger Ucayali–Amazon system. Distribution records extend across the western Amazon basin of Peru, with additional records from Colombia and from the Napo River basin reaching into eastern Ecuador.

The species inhabits both lotic (stream) and lentic (lake, flooded forest) environments at low elevations. It is sympatric with H. ocellifer and a diverse assemblage of other small characids. Peruvian fisheries surveys record it alongside other 'mojarrita' tetras in soft, slightly acidic to neutral blackwater and whitewater habitats typical of Amazonian lowland streams: warm water in the 75–82 °F range, low conductivity, pH broadly 6.0–7.5.

Feeding

Like most small Hemigrammus, H. luelingi is an opportunistic omnivore in the wild, feeding on tiny invertebrates, zooplankton, small aquatic insects, and organic particulates in the mid-water column. The species is adapted to the nutrient dynamics of Amazonian blackwater and whitewater systems where food items can be seasonally variable and dispersed.

In the aquarium it presents no particular feeding challenges. It accepts fine-grade dried foods including micro-pellets and crushed flake, but condition, colour, and breeding readiness are markedly improved by a varied diet incorporating live or frozen Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, Cyclops, and micro-worms. As with most small tetras, small, frequent meals suit it better than single large feedings, and care should be taken to ensure that food particles are small enough for fish of this size.

Mating

Hemigrammus luelingi is an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care, following the pattern typical of the genus and the family Characidae. Sexually ripe males typically show a slimmer profile compared with ripe females, whose abdomens become visibly distended with eggs. Courtship involves active chasing among vegetation and fine-leaved plant growth, with the male driving the female through the spawning medium.

Spawning triggers in the aquarium are typical for Amazonian tetras: a modest drop in temperature, slightly increased water softness, and the presence of fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops. Like H. ocellifer and close relatives, this species will spawn in the morning or in response to a water change that mimics the onset of the rainy season. Adults are not bond-forming and will readily eat their own eggs if given the opportunity.

Breeding

Breeding H. luelingi follows standard Hemigrammus protocol. A well-conditioned pair or small breeding group introduced into a separate breeding tank with soft, slightly acidic water (pH around 6.0–6.8), temperature around 79–81 °F, and fine-leaved plants or spawning mops will typically spawn within a few days. Eggs are small, semi-adhesive, and deposited among plant leaves or mop fibres near the bottom.

The adults must be removed after spawning is complete, as they show no parental interest and will consume the eggs. Incubation at typical breeding temperatures lasts approximately 24–36 hours, with free-swimming fry appearing a further 3–4 days later. Initial food must be very fine — infusoria, paramecia, or commercial liquid fry food — followed by newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii once the fry are large enough. The species is rarely bred in large numbers in the hobby; its small size means that commercial production is limited and most stock offered by specialist importers is wild-caught or small-batch tank-bred.

In the aquarium

Hemigrammus luelingi is a peaceful, shoaling species well suited to a community of small Amazonian fishes. A school of eight or more individuals is recommended to allow natural social behaviour and to reduce inter-fish stress; in smaller groups the fish may become skittish. Given its maximum size of 1 in, it is most appropriately housed with other small, non-aggressive species — small rasboras, other miniature tetras, pygmy corydoras, and similarly sized pencilfish make good tankmates.

The tank should reflect the species' natural habitat: subdued lighting, a dark substrate, soft to moderately soft and slightly acidic water (pH 6.0–7.0, temperature 75–82 °F), and a good covering of fine-leaved plants or floating vegetation to diffuse light and provide security. Under these conditions the shoulder and tail spots glow most vividly. Filtration should provide gentle flow without strong turbulence; Amazonian soft-water tetras of this type dislike strong currents. The species is rarely available outside specialist importers or wholesalers who handle Peruvian and Colombian stream tetras, but it is undemanding once established in appropriate conditions.

Conservation

Hemigrammus luelingi is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment recorded in April 2014. The species' relatively broad distribution across the Pacaya, Napo, and broader western Amazon drainages of Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador supports a stable population, and no specific habitat threats or population declines have been recorded that would warrant a more threatened category.

The Pacaya River basin sits within the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve in Peru, one of the largest protected areas in the Peruvian Amazon, which affords some degree of habitat security. Like most Amazonian small-tetra species, H. luelingi faces no immediate conservation concern but remains subject to the broad pressures of deforestation, river modification, and climate-driven hydrological change that affect lowland Amazonian fish communities generally. Commercial collection for the ornamental trade is low-intensity and is not believed to threaten wild populations at current levels.
