Hemigrammus megaceps was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1945. The type locality is Ninabamba, near Ayacucho, in the Ucayali River drainage of Peru, at an elevation of approximately 1,2953 ft above sea level. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name Hemigrammus megaceps Fowler, 1945; because the species was described within the genus where it remains, the authority is given without parentheses.

Hemigrammus is one of the largest genera within the family Characidae and encompasses numerous small, silver-bodied tetras across tropical South America. Géry's 1977 survey Characoids of the World remains an important reference for the broader genus. The taxonomic placement of H. megaceps has not been subject to major revision, and no synonyms are recorded for this species. Its high-altitude type locality distinguishes it from the majority of Hemigrammus species, which are lowland Amazonian fishes.

Morphology

Hemigrammus megaceps is a small fish, reaching a maximum recorded total length of 1 in. If wild-collected specimens were ever to become available, the high-altitude origin of the type locality suggests that cooler water temperatures — lower than the 75–82 °F standard for most Amazonian tetras — might be more appropriate, though populations from lower elevations within its recorded range would likely tolerate warmer conditions. Data on care requirements are absent; any keeper would be working from inference and direct observation.
