Hemigrammus melanochrous is a small characid from the Madeira River drainage of South America, reaching just 1 in in total length. Dark-bodied and largely unknown to the mainstream aquarium trade, it is one of the many cryptic tetras of the Amazonian lowlands — abundant in undisturbed forested streams, stable in the wild, and notable mainly to specialists working on small-bodied characids of the middle Amazon basin.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemigrammus melanochrous was described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1913 on material from South America. The valid name is recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as Hemigrammus melanochrous Fowler, 1913, placing it in the large and morphologically variable genus Hemigrammus Gill, 1858. The genus belongs to the family Characidae, the core characids, though the broader systematics of this group continue to be revised as molecular and morphological analyses accumulate.

The species is placed within the subfamily Pristellinae. It is distributed in the middle Madeira River basin of South America, with occurrence also reported from Colombia. As with many small-bodied characids, its taxonomy rests primarily on the original description and subsequent checklist records rather than on a modern morphological revision.

Morphology

Hemigrammus melanochrous is a small, slender tetra reaching approximately 1 in total length. As its name suggests (Greek mélanos, black, and chrous, skin colour), the species exhibits a notably dark or dusky body pigmentation compared with many congeners. Beyond this defining feature, morphological details for this species are sparse in the accessible literature.

Like other Hemigrammus, it would be expected to show the genus's characteristic fusiform body, moderate lateral compression, and the presence of scales on the lower lobe of the caudal fin — the defining trait that separates Hemigrammus from the closely related Hyphessobrycon. Adult coloration and any sexually dimorphic features have not been well described in the published record.

Habitat

Hemigrammus melanochrous occurs in the freshwater systems of the middle Madeira River basin in South America, a major tributary of the Amazon, with records also from Colombia. FishBase categorises it as a benthopelagic freshwater species, indicating use of the lower water column in association with bottom structure.

Field survey data from Amazonian stream ecology indicate that H. melanochrous is found in relatively undisturbed forested streams, where it can represent a significant proportion of small-fish community samples. This association with intact riparian forest habitat is consistent with the IUCN assessment that its populations occur in areas that remain comparatively undisturbed across the Amazon basin lowlands.

Feeding

No specific dietary studies for Hemigrammus melanochrous have been located in the literature. As a small-bodied characid of forested Amazonian streams, it likely feeds opportunistically on small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and terrestrial insects that fall to the surface — as well as algae and fine organic matter, following the broad omnivorous pattern typical of small tetras in these habitats.

In an aquarium setting, species of similar size and ecology accept a wide range of prepared and live foods: micro-pellets, finely crushed flake, and small live or frozen items such as Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and micro-worms.

Mating

Specific mating observations for Hemigrammus melanochrous are not documented in the published literature. Based on the biology of the genus and family, it would be expected to be a typical characid egg scatterer: spawning in open water or among fine-leaved vegetation, with no pair bond and no parental involvement after eggs are released.

Males of Hemigrammus species typically pursue receptive females through the vegetation, with brief side-by-side contact at the moment of egg and milt release. Adhesive eggs settle or cling among plant leaves and substrate, where they are left to develop without parental attention.

Breeding

No captive breeding accounts for Hemigrammus melanochrous have been documented in the accessible hobby or scientific literature. By analogy with small-bodied Hemigrammus congeners that have been bred in aquaria, one would expect the species to spawn among fine-leaved plants or over a spawning mop, producing small adhesive eggs that hatch within one to two days at typical tropical temperatures.

Adults in the characid family generally do not guard eggs and will consume them if not removed. Fry would require very small initial foods such as infusoria or commercial liquid fry preparations before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Given the species' obscurity in the trade, captive breeding records, if they exist, have not reached the published literature.

In the aquarium

Hemigrammus melanochrous is essentially absent from the mainstream aquarium trade and is rarely, if ever, encountered outside specialist collections or research-sourced stocks. Its small adult size of around 1 in would make it suitable for a nano or planted aquarium if it were available, and its association with forested Amazonian streams suggests it would prefer soft, slightly acidic to neutral water with good cover and subdued lighting.

For aquarists who do obtain this species, standard small-tetra husbandry applies: a well-filtered, planted tank with open swimming space, neutral to slightly acidic water in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, and a varied diet of small prepared and live foods. Keeping it in a group would be expected to elicit more natural behaviour, as most small characids are shoaling fish by nature.

Conservation

Hemigrammus melanochrous is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment completed in March 2021. The rationale notes its broad distribution across Amazon basin lowlands in relatively undisturbed areas, a stable population trend, and the absence of obvious threats. The species is recorded from at least one protected area.

While no immediate conservation concern exists at the species level, the long-term integrity of its Amazonian forest-stream habitat depends on the broader conservation of the Amazon basin. Deforestation and watershed degradation in the Madeira drainage remain ongoing pressures that affect many small-bodied fish of similar ecology, even if they have not yet triggered population declines sufficient to alter the LC assessment for this species.
