Hemigrammus mimus is a diminutive characid — reaching barely 1 in standard length — that earns its name by mimicking the appearance of species in the genus Microschemobrycon with such fidelity that it was long suspected to belong there. Confined to the upper Rio Negro, Rio Branco, and upper Rio Orinoco drainages of Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela, it inhabits the dark, acidic waters of one of South America's most biodiverse river basins, and remains little studied both in the wild and in the aquarium hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemigrammus mimus was described by James Böhlke in 1955 from material collected at rapids at Camanáos on the Rio Negro, Brazil — a locality that remains the type locality for the species. Böhlke placed the fish in Hemigrammus, the large and ecologically diverse characid genus, where Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes retains the valid name as Hemigrammus mimus Böhlke, 1955.

The placement has not gone unchallenged. Authors have observed that H. mimus bears a striking external resemblance to species of Microschemobrycon, a small and morphologically distinct genus also found in Orinoco-Amazon blackwater systems. The IUCN assessment notes that the species 'may belong to Microschemobrycon', and the etymology of the specific epithet — from the Latin mimus, meaning actor or mime — was coined precisely to flag this mimicry. Whether the similarity is convergent or signals a closer relationship to Microschemobrycon than to Hemigrammus sensu stricto has not been resolved by a published revision. For now, Catalog of Fishes authority governs, and the species stands in Hemigrammus.

Morphology

Hemigrammus mimus is a very small fish, with FishBase recording a maximum standard length of 1 in. Like other small Hemigrammus it is slender and laterally compressed, with the typical characid body plan: a forked tail, an adipose fin, and a moderately high dorsal fin positioned roughly over mid-body.

The key diagnostic feature — and the source of its name — is an external resemblance to Microschemobrycon callops and Microschemobrycon casiquiare, species that share its blackwater range. The precise coloration and pigment markings that drive the mimicry are not exhaustively documented in the hobbyist literature, reflecting the species' scarcity in the trade. Published material is sparse; aquarists who have kept the species note typical Hemigrammus patterning with the fine lateral banding that characterises many small blackwater tetras.

Habitat

The species is distributed across the upper Rio Negro (including its upper tributaries and the adjacent Rio Branco), and the upper Rio Orinoco basin, with records from Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela. The Rio Negro is the world's largest blackwater river — its colour derived from dissolved humic and fulvic acids leached from the surrounding forest soils — and its waters are characteristically warm, very soft, and acidic, with negligible hardness and conductivity and a pH typically between 4 and 6.

The IUCN assessment notes that H. mimus occurs 'in black and murky water rivers, apparently in sandbars (inland wetlands)', a description consistent with the shallow, sheltered microhabitats favoured by many small characids in Amazonian blackwater systems. The region is among the least disturbed of South America's great river basins, and the species' range sits largely within intact or lightly modified habitat.

Feeding

No detailed study of the natural diet of Hemigrammus mimus has been published. By analogy with ecologically similar small Hemigrammus species from blackwater Amazonian habitats, it is likely a microinvertebrate predator, taking small zooplankton, insect larvae, and microcrustaceans from the water column and from the substrate and leaf litter.

In the rare instances where the species is kept in captivity, it would be expected to accept the small live and frozen foods — Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, micro-worm, and fine dried foods — that sustain other diminutive blackwater tetras. Given its small maximum size, prey and food particle size should be matched accordingly.

Mating

No published account of the courtship behaviour of Hemigrammus mimus in the wild or in captivity has been located. As a member of Hemigrammus — a genus of egg-scattering, non-guarding characids — it almost certainly follows the standard open-water or plant-associated spawning mode of the group: males court receptive females with fin displays and active pursuit, and pairs scatter adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or over substrates, with neither parent providing any subsequent care.

Mating in the natural habitat would likely be triggered by seasonal cues — temperature shifts, photoperiod, and the onset of the high-water season — as is typical for characids throughout the Amazon and Orinoco basins.

Breeding

Hemigrammus mimus is essentially unknown in captive breeding circles, and no dedicated breeding account has been traced. The general Hemigrammus model applies: egg-scattering spawning over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, adhesive eggs, no parental care, and the expectation that adults will consume their own spawn if not separated from it promptly.

Should the species become available to aquarists, the soft, very acidic, warm water conditions of its native blackwater habitat — pH 4.5 to 6.0, negligible hardness, temperature around 79–82 °F — would represent the most defensible starting point for conditioning and triggering spawning. Fry would require very small first foods appropriate to their size at hatching.

In the aquarium

Hemigrammus mimus is an extreme rarity in the aquarium trade and is not commercially available through normal retail channels. It is occasionally collected alongside other Rio Negro micro-tetras by specialist importers, but aquarists are unlikely to encounter it unless sourcing directly from blackwater wild-caught shipments.

For anyone who does obtain the species, the standard approach for Rio Negro blackwater micro-tetras applies: a mature, well-filtered aquarium with very soft, acidic water (pH 5.0–6.5, near-zero hardness, temperature 75–82 °F), dim or diffuse lighting, a dark substrate, and the cover of floating plants or fine-leaved vegetation. At 1 in maximum it is among the smallest tetras and must be kept with species of comparable size — it would be a meal for anything with a large enough mouth. A group of at least six reduces stress and encourages natural shoaling behaviour.

Conservation

Hemigrammus mimus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in 2023 based on a March 2021 evaluation by Flávio Lima. The population trend is considered stable. The species has a broad distribution across the upper Rio Negro, Rio Branco, and upper Orinoco systems — a region that remains largely undisturbed — and no specific threats have been identified.

While the overall conservation picture is reassuring, the species' extremely small body size and its occurrence in blackwater habitats make it poorly represented in collections and surveys, and basic ecological data remain sparse. The long-term integrity of its range will depend on the continued protection of the Amazon and Orinoco headwater forests from deforestation, gold mining, and river pollution — the principal threats to blackwater fish communities across the region.
