The specific epithet -pretoensis carries the Latin locative suffix -ensis, meaning 'of' or 'from', attached to the creek's Portuguese name — Igarapé Préto, meaning Black Creek — reflecting the tannin-stained, dark waters typical of Amazonian igarapés.
The species is placed within Hemigrammus, one of the largest and most species-rich genera of Neotropical characids. Hemigrammus is distinguished from the closely related Hyphessobrycon by the presence of scales on the caudal fin, though the boundaries between these genera have long been debated and molecular work continues to reshape the subfamily-level classification. Hemigrammus pretoensis is not among the commonly traded Hemigrammus tetras and is seldom encountered in general aquarium retail. Its small adult size — just over 2 in — makes it compatible with the range of small, peaceful tankmates suited to a community Amazonian biotope: other small tetras, dwarf cichlids, corydoras catfish, and small loricariids.
Water conditions matching its igarapé origin are advisable: warm (75–82 °F), soft, and acidic to neutral, with subdued lighting and tannin-stained water recreated through the addition of dried leaf litter or botanical extracts. A planted tank with open swimming space and areas of shade mimics the dappled forest-creek environment. As a schooling species, it should be kept in a group of at least six to eight individuals to reduce stress and encourage natural behaviour.
