The garnet tetra is a small, quietly dazzling characin from the upper Amazon basin whose common name understates it: the rear quarter of the body carries a deep, jewel-like red blush, a broad black wedge angles into it from below, and the upper eye is tinted gold — a combination that earns the alternative name 'pretty tetra' with some justification. Reaching barely 1.5 in in standard length, Hemigrammus pulcher has been a steady presence in the ornamental trade since its description by Werner Ladiges in 1938, and it remains an ideal subject for a well-planted biotope representing the blackwater and clearwater rivers of the Peruvian and Ecuadorian Amazon.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemigrammus pulcher was described by Werner Ladiges in 1938 in a paper covering three new characins from the Peruvian Amazon, published in the Zoologischer Anzeiger (vol. 124, nos. 3–4). The type locality is the upper Amazon basin of Peru. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Hemigrammus pulcher Ladiges, 1938; because the species was described in Hemigrammus and remains placed there in the conventional sense, the authority is unparenthesised.

A note of taxonomic complexity surrounds the species: GBIF and some recent revisionary work treat it under the synonym Holopristis pulchra (Ladiges, 1938), reflecting proposals to split or revise the broadly defined genus Hemigrammus. In current aquarium and ichthyological literature, however, Hemigrammus pulcher remains the name most widely applied, and it is the name used here pending a stable, comprehensive revision. The species is not to be confused with its close relative Hemigrammus haraldi, with which it partially overlaps in range and which has historically been mixed with it in the trade and in museum collections. H. haraldi was described later and is considered a distinct, if superficially similar, species; any Brazilian records of H. pulcher may represent H. haraldi.

Hemigrammus itself is one of the largest genera in the family Characidae, a diverse Neotropical family encompassing the bulk of the aquarium 'tetras'. Within Hemigrammus, H. pulcher belongs to a group of species characterised by a dark caudal peduncle spot and a half-gold, half-red upper iris.

Morphology

Hemigrammus pulcher is a compact, laterally compressed characin with a typical Hemigrammus body plan: somewhat deep-bodied relative to its length, with a bluntly rounded snout and moderate-sized eyes. Maximum recorded standard length is approximately 1.5 in (roughly 2 in total length including fins), making it one of the smaller species in the genus. Both sexes are similarly sized, though females tend to be fuller-bodied, particularly when gravid.

The coloration is the species' most distinctive trait. The body ground colour is silvery to pale brownish, and the posterior quarter of the body — from roughly the adipose fin to the caudal peduncle — carries a broad, deep-red to garnet blush that gives the fish its primary common name. Against this red zone sits a prominent wedge-shaped black marking that angles upward from the ventral edge of the caudal peduncle, varying in sharpness between individuals. The upper half of the iris is bright gold, the lower half red; this bi-coloured eye, combined with the body markings, is the easiest field character for separating H. pulcher from most congeners. A faint lateral stripe may be visible in certain lighting. Like all Hemigrammus species, it possesses scales on the caudal fin lobes — the character that historically distinguished Hemigrammus from the otherwise similar Hyphessobrycon.

Habitat

Hemigrammus pulcher occurs in the upper Amazon River basin, with confirmed records from the Marañon and Ucayali rivers in Peru and the Napo River in Ecuador. It is also reported from the Amazon basin in Colombia. The species is most reliably associated with the Iquitos region of northeastern Peru, where it has historically been most commonly collected for the ornamental trade, and the IUCN notes it as relatively common around that city.

The fish inhabits a range of lotic and lentic environments within this system, including large streams, rivers, and their associated floodplain waters. It is a mid-water generalist, typically found in the middle of the water column among vegetation and structural cover rather than in open-river flow. The waters of the upper Amazon basin where this species occurs range from blackwater to clearwater in character: typically soft, acidic, and low in dissolved minerals, often stained brown with tannins. Reported water chemistry parameters reflect this: pH 5.0–6.0, hardness up to around 12 dH, and temperatures in the range of 73–81 °F.

Feeding

Hemigrammus pulcher is an opportunistic omnivore typical of small Amazonian characins. The natural diet includes small aquatic invertebrates such as worms and tiny crustaceans, plant material, and presumably small insects and other organic matter encountered while foraging in the middle of the water column and at the surface.

In the aquarium the species accepts a wide range of foods without difficulty. A quality small-particle flake or micro-pellet forms a suitable staple, supplemented with live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, Moina, micro-worms, and bloodworm. As with most small tetras, colour intensity and breeding condition improve markedly when live or frozen foods make up a meaningful portion of the diet. The fish poses no threat to tankmates — it is fully invertebrate-safe in terms of what it will eat voluntarily, ignoring anything it cannot swallow whole.

Mating

Hemigrammus pulcher is a typical open-water, egg-scattering characin with no pair bond formation and no parental care. In the wild, spawning presumably follows the pattern common to the genus: the male pursues and courts the female with rapid lateral displays and fine-fin spreading, driving her through vegetation or into areas of fine-leaved cover where eggs and sperm are released simultaneously in brief, quivering spawning dashes.

Males in a group will compete actively for access to receptive females, and a well-conditioned mixed group in a planted aquarium will often attempt to spawn spontaneously without any special intervention from the aquarist. Because the adults will eat their own eggs readily, successful reproduction in captivity requires either a well-planted aquarium with sufficient hiding places for eggs, or removal of the adults after spawning. There is no evidence of courtship beyond the immediate pre-spawning chase, and no territorial or nesting behaviour.

Breeding

Breeding Hemigrammus pulcher follows the standard protocol for small egg-scattering Amazonian tetras. Conditioning adults on live and frozen foods for one to two weeks brings both sexes into reproductive readiness; females become noticeably fuller when gravid. A dedicated breeding tank of 10–15 US gal, heavily planted with fine-leaved vegetation such as Java moss or furnished with synthetic spawning mops, works well. The water should be soft and slightly acidic — pH 5.5–6.5, hardness below 5 dH — and warm, around 77–81 °F. Gentle filtration through a sponge filter avoids fry losses from suction.

Spawning typically occurs in the early morning. Eggs are adhesive and small, deposited individually or in small groups among the spawning medium. FishBase records an incubation period of approximately 20–24 hours at suitable temperatures, making this one of the faster-hatching small tetras. Adults must be removed promptly after spawning is complete to prevent egg predation. Hatched fry hang near the water surface for a day or two, absorbing the yolk sac, before becoming free-swimming and requiring very fine first foods such as infusoria, paramecia, or commercial liquid fry preparations. Newly hatched brine shrimp can be introduced once the fry are large enough to take them. Growth is gradual and the full adult coloration, particularly the garnet blush and black wedge, develops over several months.

In the aquarium

Hemigrammus pulcher is a peaceful, undemanding small tetra well suited to community aquaria and particularly effective in planted biotope setups designed around the upper Amazon. It should be kept in groups of at least six, and preferably ten or more — shoaling size directly influences how settled and naturally the fish behaves, and a larger group produces more striking collective displays as males interact. A tank of 15–20 US gal or more provides adequate space for a proper school.

Water chemistry should reflect the species' natural soft-acid habitat: pH 5.0–6.5, hardness below 10 dH, and temperature 73–81 °F. Tannin-stained water created with Indian almond leaves or peat filtration replicates the blackwater environment, intensifies the garnet and black markings, and appears to improve the overall health and condition of the fish. The species is sensitive to poor water quality and high nitrates, so regular water changes are essential. Good tankmates include other small, peaceful characins from the same river system, small corydoras catfish, apistogramma cichlids, and similarly soft-water hatchetfish; avoid larger or boisterous species that will intimidate this gentle fish. The gold-and-red iris is best appreciated at close range under moderate lighting directed slightly downward, which catches the metallic sheen of the eye most effectively.

Conservation

Hemigrammus pulcher is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, an assessment published in 2016 based on an evaluation conducted on 22 April 2014. The species is considered relatively common within its range, particularly in the region around Iquitos in northeastern Peru, and faces no major identified threats at present. It is harvested for the ornamental fish trade but not at a level considered intensive enough to threaten the population.

The distribution spans the upper Amazon basin across Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia — a large area that includes portions of the western Amazon protected by national parks and reserves. The IUCN notes no protection measures specifically in place for the species, and the question of whether it occurs within formally protected areas is unresolved. The species' association with H. haraldi creates some uncertainty in distribution modelling — collections previously attributed to H. pulcher in Brazil may represent the latter species — but this taxonomic issue does not affect the conservation assessment materially. For the foreseeable future the garnet tetra appears secure across its range, and captive-bred stock is widely available in the trade, reducing reliance on wild collection.
