The rummynose tetra is one of the most immediately recognisable small characins in the hobby: a slender silver fish whose head flushes a vivid cherry-red and whose caudal fin is boldly barred in black and white, the two patterns together making identification effortless at a glance. Hemigrammus rhodostomus was described by Ernst Ahl in 1924 from specimens collected in the Rio Juruá of Amazonas State, Brazil, and that blackwater drainage remains its type locality. In the aquarium it has become a staple of the planted-tank scene, prized for its schooling behaviour and its habit of swimming in tight, synchronised formation that amplifies the collective colour signal of the group.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemigrammus rhodostomus was described by the German ichthyologist Ernst Ahl in 1924, from the Amazon basin of Brazil, and it has carried that name through most of its history in both science and the aquarium hobby. A 2020 molecular study reassigned the true rummynose — together with the firehead rummynose (Hemigrammus bleheri) — to the genus Petitella, which until then had held only the false rummynose, Petitella georgiae. That reassignment is not yet widely followed in the aquarium literature, so this atlas retains the long-established and far more familiar combination Hemigrammus rhodostomus; recent taxonomic databases also list the species as Petitella rhodostoma.

The genus Hemigrammus sits within the family Characidae, the vast assemblage of characins that dominates the freshwater fish fauna of South America. The common name “rummynose tetra” is shared by three similar fishes — Hemigrammus rhodostomus (the “true” rummynose), Hemigrammus bleheri (the firehead or Bleher’s rummynose, the form most often sold in shops), and Petitella georgiae (the false rummynose). All three wear the same red head and black-and-white barred tail but differ in the exact reach of the red onto the head, in the fine pattern of the tail, and in distribution; H. rhodostomus is told apart by those caudal and facial details.

No subspecies are recognised. The red snout that names the fish doubles as a sensitive gauge of water quality in the aquarium: it fades quickly when conditions deteriorate and flushes deepest when the water is clean and well-kept.

Morphology

Hemigrammus rhodostomus is a small, slender-bodied characin reaching approximately 1.5 in standard length. The body is fusiform and laterally compressed, typical of open-water schooling tetras built for sustained mid-water swimming. The fin complement follows the characin plan: an adipose fin is present, and the dorsal, anal, and paired fins are all modestly sized and clear to translucent.

The colour pattern is strikingly bipartite. The head — including the snout, lips, and the region around and behind the eye — is suffused with bright red to orange-red, the intensity varying with condition, temperature, and stress level. A well-conditioned school in a settled tank shows nearly uniformly crimson heads; stressed or recently transported fish pale noticeably, making the rummynose a useful barometer of aquarium health. The body is silvery with a faint lateral iridescence. The caudal fin carries a bold pattern of alternating black and white horizontal bars that together form a distinctive flag-like marking, visible from a distance and a key recognition feature at the group level.

Sexual dimorphism is subtle: females tend to be slightly deeper-bodied when in breeding condition, and males are marginally slenderer, but the two are not easily distinguished at a casual glance.

Habitat

The type locality of Hemigrammus rhodostomus is the Rio Juruá, a major right-bank tributary of the upper Amazon in Amazonas State, Brazil. The Juruá drains through seasonally flooded forest and meanders across the south-western Amazon lowlands, producing the soft, acidic, tannin-stained blackwater conditions characteristic of the region. Water in these habitats is typically very low in dissolved minerals, with conductivity sometimes below 20 µS/cm, pH values ranging from the low-to-mid fives up through about 6.5, and temperatures in the range of 73–79 °F.

In nature the species occurs in the mid-water column of slow-flowing channels, flooded forest margins (igapó), and smaller tributary streams where canopy cover keeps light low and leaf litter contributes humic acids to the water. The distribution is understood to centre on the Amazon Basin in Brazil, consistent with the Juruá type locality, though precise range data for this species remain limited compared to more commercially prominent tetras. Its occurrence across the broader south-western Amazonian lowlands is probable given the connectivity of the drainage system, but most records trace back to the original Juruá material.

Feeding

Hemigrammus rhodostomus is a micropredator and opportunistic omnivore in the wild, feeding on small aquatic invertebrates — zooplankton, microcrustaceans, aquatic insect larvae, and small insects taken at or near the surface — as well as fine organic particulates. Its small gape reflects a diet skewed toward tiny food items, and it forages actively in the water column throughout the day.

In the aquarium it accepts a wide range of prepared foods without difficulty: good-quality micro-pellets and fine flake appropriate to its size, alongside frozen and live foods such as Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, Moina, and Cyclops. A varied diet that includes live or frozen invertebrates improves colour and condition markedly; the red pigmentation in the head is influenced by carotenoid intake, and a diet based entirely on dry food can lead to some fading over time. Feeding small amounts two or three times daily suits its feeding strategy better than a single large daily ration.

Mating

Hemigrammus rhodostomus is an egg-scattering open spawner with no pair bond and no parental care, consistent with the reproductive strategy of the majority of small characins. Courtship is brief and involves male pursuit of females through fine-leaved vegetation or among plant thickets, with the male making lateral passes alongside the female and nudging her flank. No extended courtship display or territory defence has been reported; the species appears to spawn opportunistically in groups rather than forming stable pairs.

Spawning typically occurs in the early morning hours. Eggs are small and non-adhesive or weakly adhesive, scattered among fine-leaved plants, moss, or substrate. Because the adults show no inhibition about consuming their own eggs, conditions that separate the spawning adults from the eggs immediately after release give the best results in captivity. The intensity of rummynose red in the head of both sexes can serve as a rough guide to breeding condition, with peak coloration often correlating with readiness to spawn.

Breeding

Breeding Hemigrammus rhodostomus in captivity requires soft, acidic water that approximates its natural blackwater conditions: pH in the range of 5.5–6.5 and very low hardness, with temperatures at the warmer end of its comfort range around 79–82 °F. A dedicated breeding tank of moderate size with fine-leaved plants such as Java moss, or synthetic spawning mops, provides the egg-deposition sites the fish seek out. Dim lighting and the addition of peat filtrate or Indian almond leaves to the water encourages conditioning and spawning activity.

A conditioned group or pair is introduced to the breeding tank in the evening. Spawning typically follows within a day or two once the fish have settled and water chemistry is correct. Eggs are small, semi-transparent, and scattered in small numbers among vegetation. Because adults will readily consume the eggs, breeders usually remove the adults after spawning is observed, or harvest the plants to a separate rearing vessel. Incubation at around 79 °F takes approximately 24–36 hours, and the fry are free-swimming within a few days of hatching. First foods must be very fine: infusoria, paramecia, or commercial liquid fry foods, followed by rotifers and newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as the fry grow. Growth is relatively slow and juveniles are delicate in the early weeks.

In the aquarium

The rummynose tetra is a classic planted-tank fish, widely available in the hobby in both wild-caught and tank-bred forms. It is best kept in schools of at least eight to ten individuals; the schooling instinct is strong, and a large cohesive group produces the rippling red-and-white spectacle that makes the species worth keeping. Smaller groups tend to scatter or shoal loosely, reducing the visual impact and sometimes increasing stress in individual fish.

Water quality is where this species demands the most attention. Hemigrammus rhodostomus is sensitive to elevated nitrates, ammonia, and to the stress of hard, alkaline tap water. It thrives in soft, slightly acidic to neutral water that has been aged or filtered through peat, with stable parameters and excellent oxygenation through good surface movement. Temperatures in the range of 73–79 °F suit it well. The red head colour is one of the best indicators of fish health in the aquarium: a school showing uniformly vivid crimson faces is a well-kept school; fading or blotchiness signals stress, disease, or declining water quality.

Tankmates should be peaceful and of similar or smaller size — other small characins, small rasboras, dwarf cichlids that will not harass open-water shoalers, and small corydoras all work well. The rummynose is long-lived for its size under good conditions, with aquarium lifespans of five or more years reported.

Conservation

Hemigrammus rhodostomus does not currently appear to hold a formal IUCN Red List assessment, placing it among the many small-bodied Amazonian fish species for which conservation data are insufficient or for which no evaluation has been completed. The species' restricted type locality in the Rio Juruá of Amazonas State, Brazil, and its apparent endemism to the south-western Amazon Basin mean that it could be vulnerable to habitat pressures without those pressures being formally monitored.

The Rio Juruá catchment and broader south-western Amazonian lowlands face ongoing deforestation, agricultural encroachment, and associated changes in water quality and hydrology — threats shared by the great majority of small blackwater characins. The ornamental-fish trade historically sourced rummynose tetras from wild Amazonian collections, though tank-bred stock is now widely available and reduces collecting pressure. Choosing captive-bred individuals where possible is a straightforward step hobbyists can take in the absence of detailed wild population data for this species. A formal conservation assessment would be valuable for clarifying the species' range, population status, and exposure to threats.
