Hemigrammus taphorni was described by Benine and Lopes in 2007. The type locality is associated with northern South American river drainages; the specific epithet taphorni honours ichthyologist Donald C. Taphorn, a prominent authority on Venezuelan freshwater fishes who contributed extensively to knowledge of Orinoco basin diversity.
The genus Hemigrammus Gill, 1858 is one of the largest in the family Characidae and presents persistent taxonomic difficulties: many of its roughly 70 recognised species are distinguished primarily by subtle combinations of pigmentation, meristics, and the presence or absence of scales on the caudal fin — a character historically used to separate Hemigrammus from the closely related Hyphessobrycon. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name Hemigrammus taphorni Benine & Lopes, 2007. As with other Hemigrammus, the species is placed within the broad and still unsettled Characidae, the family that encompasses the majority of Neotropical tetras.
Morphology
Hemigrammus taphorni is a small tetra reaching approximately 1–1.5 in standard length. Like most members of the genus it is laterally compressed, with a relatively deep but streamlined body, a terminal mouth, and the adipose fin characteristic of characids. The caudal fin is forked.

A group of six or more individuals is the appropriate social unit for shoaling characids; solitary or very small groups tend to be skittish and show poor colour.
A biotope-appropriate setup reflecting northern South American lowland streams — warm, soft to moderately soft water at pH 6.0–7.2, 75–82 °F, with dim lighting, a dark substrate, and ample fine-leaved planting or dried leaf litter — would be the logical starting point for any keeper who obtained specimens. Good filtration maintaining low nitrates and stable parameters is standard for small characids. Should the species ever become available, its expected maximum size of around 1.5 in SL makes it compatible with nano and small community aquaria.
Conservation
Hemigrammus taphorni has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; its conservation status is Not Evaluated (NE). The species was described only in 2007, and many recently described small Neotropical characids have not yet received formal conservation assessments given the scale of Amazonian and Orinoco basin fish diversity.
Northern South American riverine habitats face ongoing pressures from agricultural expansion, deforestation, and the alteration of water courses, but without range data or population estimates for H. taphorni, no meaningful threat assessment can be made here.
