Taxonomy & naming
Hemigrammus vorderwinkleri was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1963. The valid name as maintained in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Hemigrammus vorderwinkleri Géry, 1963. The species is placed in the family Characidae, the largest family of characiform fishes.
The genus Hemigrammus is large and taxonomically unsettled — it contains well over 70 species — and its boundaries relative to allied genera such as Hyphessobrycon remain under active revision. FishBase currently lists the species under the subfamily Pristellinae, but generic and subfamilial placements across this part of the Characidae are subject to ongoing phylogenetic work and should be treated as provisional. The species is not known to have widely used common names in the hobby.
Morphology
Hemigrammus vorderwinkleri is a small, slender tetra reaching approximately 1.5 in standard length (SL); FishBase records a maximum of around 1.5 in total length. The body form is typical of the genus: laterally compressed, with a moderate depth, a rounded snout, and the characteristic adipose fin of the Characidae.
Detailed colour pattern descriptions from scientific literature are not widely reproduced in accessible sources, and the species remains less thoroughly documented in hobbyist literature than more commonly traded tetras. Like many small Hemigrammus it is likely a subtle, silvery fish with a dark lateral stripe or caudal spot, but specific markings should be confirmed from live specimens or specialist sources rather than assumed.
Habitat
The species is native to the middle Rio Negro basin of Brazil, one of the world's great blackwater river systems. The Rio Negro drains an enormous area of Amazonian lowland forest and is characterised by dark, tannin-rich water with very low mineral content, strong acidity, and very low conductivity — conditions produced by the leaching of organic matter from forest soils with little buffering from underlying rock.
Typical ambient water temperatures in the middle Negro region fall in the range of 73–81 °F. The extreme softness and acidity of blackwater environments like the Negro mean that fishes adapted to them are generally sensitive to hard or alkaline water in captivity. The specific microhabitats occupied by H. vorderwinkleri within the basin — whether it favours flooded forest margins, main-channel edges, or tributaries — are not well documented in accessible sources.
Feeding
Hemigrammus vorderwinkleri is an omnivore in the wild, feeding on small aquatic invertebrates, zooplankton, and organic particulate matter typical of the diet of small characids in blackwater systems.
In the aquarium it readily accepts a varied diet of good-quality flake and micro-pellet foods, supplemented with small live or frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii, and micro-worm. Offering live and frozen foods alongside dry foods improves conditioning and colour and is particularly important when preparing fish for spawning.
Mating
Hemigrammus vorderwinkleri is an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care, following the general reproductive pattern of the genus. Males court females with active chasing and fin displays; spawning takes place among fine-leaved plants or over a substrate of dense vegetation.
Breeding is typically triggered by conditioning the fish with live and frozen foods and by maintaining appropriately soft, acidic water. Males tend to be slimmer than females in breeding condition, which develop a visibly fuller abdomen when ripe with eggs.
Breeding
Spawning occurs over fine-leaved aquatic plants or synthetic spawning mops, into which the pair scatter small adhesive eggs. The eggs hatch within approximately 24–36 hours at typical breeding temperatures. The free-swimming fry become active roughly 3–4 days after hatching, at which point they require very small first foods such as infusoria or commercial liquid fry food before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii.
Breeding water should be very soft and acidic — pH in the range of roughly 4–6 is cited for successful spawning, reflecting the species' blackwater origins. Because adults will eat their own eggs, spawning fish should be removed or the eggs transferred to a separate rearing vessel immediately after spawning is complete.
In the aquarium
Hemigrammus vorderwinkleri is a peaceful schooling fish best kept in a group of six or more individuals. A minimum group of this size allows the fish to school naturally and reduces stress-related behaviour. It is well suited to a soft-water or blackwater biotope aquarium alongside other small, non-aggressive Rio Negro fishes.
Water quality is important: the species does best in soft, acidic conditions consistent with its Rio Negro origins, and is not well suited to hard or alkaline tap water without appropriate preparation. Temperatures in the range of 73–81 °F are appropriate. A mature, well-filtered tank with subdued lighting, dark substrate, and the addition of botanical material such as dried leaves or botanicals to replicate blackwater conditions will bring the fish into their best colour and encourage natural behaviour. The species is compatible with similarly sized peaceful characids, small rasboras, and dwarf cichlids that share its water-chemistry requirements.
Conservation
Hemigrammus vorderwinkleri has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation status. It is presumed Not Evaluated (NE). The middle Rio Negro basin, while remote, is not free from pressure: deforestation, mercury contamination from gold mining, and climate-driven hydrological change are all documented threats to blackwater Amazonian fish communities.
The species is not widely traded and does not appear to be a target of large-scale commercial collection. Its status in the wild is unknown. Given the very large size of the Rio Negro basin and the species' apparent restriction to a portion of it, any assessment of population trend would require targeted survey work.
