Taxonomy & naming
Hollandichthys multifasciatus was described by Carl H. Eigenmann and Ancel Norris in 1900, and its authorship is placed in parentheses because the species has been moved from the genus in which it was originally placed. The valid name as recognized by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Hollandichthys multifasciatus (Eigenmann & Norris, 1900). The genus Hollandichthys belongs to the subfamily Thayeriinae within the family Characidae as currently arranged; FishBase additionally places it within the broader grouping sometimes elevated as Acestrorhamphidae, reflecting ongoing debate over the limits of Characidae sensu lato. The genus name honours William Jacob Holland (1848–1932), an American naturalist, entomologist, and paleontologist.
A species complex of at least eight morphotypes has been recognized within Hollandichthys multifasciatus (Bertaco 2003; Lima et al. 2003), suggesting that what is currently treated as a single species may encompass cryptic diversity across the coastal drainages it inhabits. Resolution of this complex awaits further systematic revision.
Morphology
Hollandichthys multifasciatus is a moderately elongate, laterally compressed characid reaching approximately 4 in standard length at maximum recorded size. The body is silvery, with a series of dark vertical bars — the feature captured by the specific epithet multifasciatus, meaning 'many-banded' — running along the flanks. A dark lateral stripe may be visible depending on mood and light angle, and the fins are generally clear to faintly pigmented.
As with most characids, sexual dimorphism is subtle. Females are generally deeper-bodied when gravid. The fish has the typical characid complement of an adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal, and the body form is well-suited for life in shallow, low-current margins where it can manoeuvre among submerged vegetation and leaf litter.
Habitat
The species is endemic to Brazil, occurring in coastal river systems from the state of Rio de Janeiro south to Rio Grande do Sul, as well as the upper Tietê River drainage in São Paulo state, which forms part of the upper Paraná basin. This range spans the Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica) coastal plain, one of the world's most biodiverse and most threatened biomes.
Within its range, Hollandichthys multifasciatus occupies permanent rivers, streams, and creeks, favouring shallow margins with little or no current, submerged and emergent vegetation, sandy or leaf-litter substrates, and transparent water. A moderate degree of riparian forest cover characterises the sites where it is most commonly recorded. Water chemistry from FishBase records a pH range of 6.0–7.5 and temperatures of 61–73 °F (61–73 °F), reflecting the cooler, temperate-influenced conditions of southern Brazil's Atlantic coast plain.
Feeding
Hollandichthys multifasciatus is an omnivore with a diet documented from field studies to include aquatic oligochaetes, plant material, and terrestrial insects. Dietary composition shifts with body size: smaller individuals take proportionally more plant material and oligochaetes, while larger fish consume more plants and terrestrial insects. FishBase assigns a trophic level of 3.0, consistent with this generalist, opportunistic feeding strategy.
In the aquarium, the species can be expected to accept a broad range of foods in line with its omnivorous habits — small live and frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia, bloodworm, and brine shrimp alongside good-quality flake and fine pellets. Offering plant-based foods periodically reflects the natural dietary component.
Mating
No detailed courtship descriptions have been published for Hollandichthys multifasciatus in the primary literature. As a characid in the Thayeriinae, the species is expected to follow the egg-scattering pattern general to the group: males likely court females with displays and pursue them among fine-leaved vegetation, with no territory-holding or pair bond. Spawning almost certainly occurs in or near aquatic vegetation in shallow, calm water margins consistent with its preferred habitat.
The species complex status of H. multifasciatus — with at least eight morphotypes across its coastal-drainage range — raises the possibility of assortative mating or population-level behavioural variation that has not yet been formally studied.
Breeding
Hollandichthys multifasciatus has not been bred in captivity to any documented degree, and detailed captive-breeding protocols are not available in the literature. Based on its family placement and habitat, breeding is expected to follow the standard characid mode: egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or substrate with no parental care, adhesive eggs deposited among vegetation, and free-swimming fry requiring small foods such as infusoria and nauplii.
The cooler temperature range (61–73 °F / 61–73 °F) suggests that the species may require lower water temperatures than most tropical tetras to condition properly for spawning, and replicating soft, slightly acidic Atlantic Forest stream water may be important for reproductive success.
In the aquarium
Hollandichthys multifasciatus is an uncommon species in the hobby, rarely encountered outside specialist fish-keeping circles with an interest in Brazilian Atlantic Forest fauna. Its cooler thermal requirements — down to 61 °F (61 °F) at the low end, with a reported maximum of 73 °F (73 °F) — place it outside the heating range of most tropical community set-ups, making it more suitable for a cool-temperate or subtropical aquarium.
A well-planted tank with gentle filtration, sandy substrate, some leaf litter, and subdued lighting would suit the species' preference for clear-water, vegetated stream margins. It is a schooling fish and should be kept in groups of six or more. Given the species-complex uncertainty across the range, aquarists should endeavour to source fish of known provenance and to keep populations separate where origin data are available.
Conservation
Hollandichthys multifasciatus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in 2022 (version 2025-2) based on a 2018 evaluation by Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio). The Least Concern listing reflects a distribution broad enough across coastal drainages to preclude range-based listing criteria, but the IUCN notes that population trend is unknown and no population data are available.
The primary identified threat is loss of native forest in the Atlantic Forest coastal plain — one of the most heavily deforested biomes on Earth, with only a small fraction of original cover remaining. The species has no documented presence in protected areas and is not the subject of any conservation programmes. The recognition of a multi-morphotype species complex introduces additional conservation concern, since morphologically distinct populations may represent evolutionarily significant units more narrowly distributed than the species as a whole. Maintaining riparian forest cover in the coastal drainage systems of southeastern Brazil is the key conservation action for this species and for the many other endemic fishes that share its habitat.
