Hollandichthys taramandahy is a small, insectivorous characid reaching about 3.5 in standard length, endemic to a narrow band of coastal Atlantic Forest drainages in southern Brazil — the Tramandaí, Mampituba, and Araranguá systems of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. It inhabits shallow, slow-to-still blackwater ponds and minor tributaries choked with leaf litter and dense riparian vegetation: a habitat type that is disappearing rapidly as deforestation and agricultural expansion fragment the Atlantic Forest. The IUCN assessed the species as Vulnerable in 2022.

Taxonomy & naming

Hollandichthys taramandahy was described by Vinicius A. Bertaco and Luiz R. Malabarba in 2013 from material collected in the Tramandaí, Mampituba, and Araranguá river basins — coastal drainages straddling the border of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina in southern Brazil. The type locality is within the rio Três Forquilhas system, a tributary of the Tramandaí basin. The valid name as listed in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Hollandichthys taramandahy Bertaco & Malabarba, 2013.

The genus Hollandichthys is a small Atlantic Forest characid genus allied to the broader Characidae. It contains only a handful of species, all confined to coastal drainages of southeastern and southern Brazil. H. taramandahy is the most southerly member of the genus and, together with H. multifasciatus — a better-known congener found further north along the Brazilian coast — represents the genus in the southern Atlantic Forest drainage network.

The specific epithet taramandahy is derived from the Tupi-Guaraní name for the Tramandaí river basin, the core of the species' range. This kind of Indigenous toponym is common in Brazilian fish nomenclature and anchors the species firmly to its geographical origin.

Morphology

H. taramandahy is a slender, laterally compressed characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 3.5 in. Like its congener H. multifasciatus, it carries the characteristic horizontal striping that gives the genus much of its visual character, although the two species differ in meristic details and the precise expression of this pattern.

The body is elongate and moderately deep, with a subterminal to terminal mouth suited to intercepting surface-fallen invertebrates. Coloration in life includes a prominent dark lateral stripe running from behind the eye to the caudal peduncle, set against a silvery to yellowish ground colour; multiple additional dark horizontal lines may parallel the central stripe, varying in intensity with mood and condition. Males and females share the basic pattern, with sexual differences more apparent in body depth than in colour. Finnage is unremarkable — the typical adipose fin of the Characidae is present, and the caudal fin is forked.

The species was distinguished from its congeners in the original description using a combination of lateral line scale counts, fin-ray counts, and morphometric ratios. Exact meristic data are recorded in Bertaco & Malabarba (2013).

Habitat

Hollandichthys taramandahy occupies a narrow environmental niche: the lateral puddles, oxbow pools, and very small tributaries associated with lowland coastal rivers, where water is shallow and essentially lentic. Substrate is soft mud overlain by accumulated leaf litter, and the water is typically blackwater — stained dark by tannins leaching from decomposing organic matter — with dense overhanging riparian vegetation that sheds insects and plant debris directly onto the water surface.

The species' known range spans the Tramandaí, Mampituba, and Araranguá river systems along the Atlantic coast of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, Brazil. All of these drain the eastern escarpment of the Atlantic Forest in a short, geographically compressed zone. The drainages are hydrologically isolated from the larger inland river systems (Paraná/Uruguay) by the Serra Geral, making dispersal between coastal and inland basins essentially impossible and reinforcing the high endemism characteristic of this coastal strip.

Water temperature specifics for the type localities are not detailed in available sources. The subtropical latitude (roughly 29–29.5°S) means seasonal temperature fluctuations are broader than in tropical counterparts; summer maxima likely reach the low-to-mid 20s Celsius while winter minima can drop substantially. This should be kept in mind when maintaining the species in captivity.

Feeding

H. taramandahy is a confirmed insectivore. Gut-content analyses and field observations recorded in the literature show a diet dominated by terrestrial arthropods that fall or are blown onto the water surface: spiders, ants, beetles, and various insect fragments. This surface-foraging strategy is consistent with the species' habitat — shallow, vegetated still-water pockets beneath dense riparian canopy where the primary energy input is allochthonous (externally derived) invertebrate rain rather than aquatic primary production.

The emphasis on hard-bodied prey such as beetles and spiders suggests a fairly robust mouth and jaw. In captivity, the species can be expected to accept live and frozen invertebrate foods — crickets, mealworms, bloodworm, Daphnia, brine shrimp — and will likely take quality dried foods once settled. Surface-presented foods may be taken more readily than sinking pellets given the species' natural foraging position.

Mating

Specific observations of mating behaviour in Hollandichthys taramandahy are not documented in available published sources. Based on the biology of the genus and the family Characidae broadly, the species is presumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care, as is typical for non-guarding characids.

Males in breeding condition likely display to females with fin-spreading and lateral presentation. In closely related species and in Characidae generally, spawning is triggered or intensified by environmental cues including temperature shifts, photoperiod, and rainfall — conditions that in the wild correspond to the onset of the warm, wet season. The shallow still-water habitats the species occupies, with abundant fine-leaved marginal vegetation and leaf litter, would provide natural spawning substrate and shelter for eggs and early fry.

Breeding

Should the species become available to dedicated breeders or researchers, a soft-to-moderately soft, tannin-rich blackwater setup cooled to mimic seasonal temperature variation would be a logical starting point, aligned with the species' habitat conditions. The surface-prey specialisation suggests conditioning on live or frozen invertebrates before attempting spawning. Fry, if small, would require fine foods at first — infusoria or commercial liquid fry foods — before graduating to nauplii and small live prey.

In the aquarium

Hollandichthys taramandahy is not an established aquarium fish. It is absent from the ornamental trade and is not kept outside of specialist research or conservation breeding contexts. The combination of restricted range, Vulnerable IUCN status, and the inaccessibility of its blackwater forest-pool habitats means that wild-caught specimens are effectively unavailable, and no captive-bred population exists in the hobby.

For any future conservation or research keeping, the species' natural habitat — shallow, still or near-still blackwater with soft substrate, leaf litter, and dense cover — should be replicated as closely as possible. A dark, heavily tannin-stained tank with a leaf-litter layer and surface cover would be appropriate. Given its insectivorous diet, live and frozen prey will be necessary for long-term maintenance. Water temperature should reflect the subtropical seasonality of its native range. The species' Vulnerable status and extreme range restriction mean that any captive-holding effort carries a potential conservation value beyond hobbyist interest.

Conservation

Hollandichthys taramandahy is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, with the 2022 assessment applying criterion B1ab(iii) — a restricted geographic range combined with continuing decline in the extent and quality of its habitat. The species qualifies as Vulnerable primarily because its entire known distribution fits within a small area of occupancy in the coastal Atlantic Forest of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, and that habitat is under sustained threat.

The Atlantic Forest is one of the most threatened and most deforested biomes on Earth. The specific habitat H. taramandahy depends on — shallow, still blackwater ponds and minor channels within intact riparian forest — is acutely vulnerable to deforestation, since the removal of streamside vegetation destroys both the physical structure of the habitat and the allochthonous food supply (fallen insects and plant material) that supports the species' diet. Agricultural expansion, urban development, dam construction, and hydroelectric diversions affecting flow regimes in these small coastal catchments compound the pressure. Agricultural runoff and water-quality degradation further narrow the window of suitable habitat.

Conservation of the species depends on protection and restoration of riparian forest within the Tramandaí, Mampituba, and Araranguá basins. Given the species' very limited range and specialist habitat requirements, even localised habitat loss in one part of its distribution represents a significant proportion of the global population. No captive safety-net population is currently known to exist in the hobby or in conservation breeding programmes.
