Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon amandae was formally described by the French-Swiss ichthyologist Jacques Géry and his Hungarian collaborator Annamária Uj in 1987, from material collected in the Araguaia–Tocantins drainage of Mato Grosso and Goiás states, Brazil. The name amandae is a feminised Latin patronym, and the species is sometimes called the fire tetra in older literature, though 'ember tetra' has become the dominant trade and hobby name. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) accepts the name as Hyphessobrycon amandae Géry & Uj, 1987.
The species spent some years in the hobby under confused names — variously sold as Hyphessobrycon sp. 'fire', as a form of the closely related H. flammeus (the flame tetra from Rio de Janeiro), or conflated with other small red Hyphessobrycon species. H. amandae is now understood to be distinct from H. flammeus on the basis of its much smaller adult size, uniformly reddish-orange body colour without the darkened posterior flanks of H. flammeus, and its separate geographic origin.
Hyphessobrycon is one of the largest genera in the family Characidae, encompassing well over 150 described species. Many authors have noted that the genus is almost certainly polyphyletic and in need of revision; phylogenetic work has repeatedly recovered several recognised subgroupings, but a comprehensive realignment of the genus has not yet been finalised. H. amandae is provisionally retained in Hyphessobrycon pending such revision, and the Catalog of Fishes is followed here as the governing taxonomic authority.
Morphology
The ember tetra is a distinctly small fish, reaching no more than about 1 in total length under aquarium conditions, with most adults measuring around 0.5–1 in. The body is slender and fusiform, characteristic of the smaller Hyphessobrycon species, with a slightly compressed flank, a single unpaired dorsal fin, an adipose fin, and the forked tail typical of characids. There is no lateral line organ, which is absent or poorly developed in many small tetras.
The coloration is the species' defining feature and its common name captures it well: the entire body is suffused with a glowing amber to deep orange-red, most intense along the posterior flanks and into the dorsal and caudal fins. The iris reflects the same warm hue. Under strong white light the colour can appear washed out, but in a dimly lit tank with warm-spectrum lighting or natural filtered light the fish appears almost luminous. Males in spawning condition tend to be slightly more intensely coloured and more slender than females; ripe females develop a noticeably rounder abdomen. There are no significant pattern elements — no lateral stripe, no spot — distinguishing H. amandae from many of its congeners whose colour patterns are more complex.
Habitat
Hyphessobrycon amandae originates from the Araguaia–Tocantins river system in central Brazil, one of the great tributaries of the Amazon basin. The Araguaia drains a vast interior plateau, and the species is associated with slow-moving or standing water along the river margins — backwaters, flooded areas, and smaller tributary streams with abundant aquatic vegetation and a soft substrate of leaf litter and sand.
The waters of the Araguaia lowlands are characteristically warm, soft, and acidic, typical of the dark 'blackwater' and clearwater river environments of the interior of Brazil. Temperature ranges are in the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius for most of the year, with pH commonly running from around 5.0 to 7.0, and conductivity very low — conditions that the ember tetra, like many small Brazilian tetras, has evolved to exploit as a refuge from larger predators that prefer more open water. Dense stands of fine-leaved aquatic plants and submerged mosses provide cover and spawning sites in the natural habitat, and this association shapes how the species behaves and what it looks for in an aquarium.
Feeding
Hyphessobrycon amandae is a micropredator in the wild, feeding on zooplankton, tiny invertebrates, small insects and their larvae, and other minute food items proportionate to its small gape. Its mouth is small even relative to the body size, and this limits the particle size it can accept.
In the aquarium it takes quality micro-sized foods readily: very fine crushed flake, micro pellets, and live or frozen foods such as micro brine shrimp nauplii, micro worms, Daphnia, and Moina. Its small size means it cannot compete well with larger, faster fish at feeding time, and in a mixed community it may be outcompeted before it can eat its fill. Providing food in multiple small portions, and ensuring that some sinks slowly through the water column, helps make sure the ember tetra gets enough. A diet with live or frozen invertebrates alongside prepared food promotes more intense coloring and keeps fish in better breeding condition.
Mating
The ember tetra is an egg-scattering species with no parental care, following the typical Hyphessobrycon reproductive pattern. Males display to females with intensified coloration and increased activity; the body color deepens and males orient side-by-side or pursue females through the vegetation. In a well-maintained aquarium with suitable plant cover, spawning can occur spontaneously without deliberate intervention.
Spawning takes place among fine-leaved plants, mosses, or over a soft substrate, with the pair driving and releasing small numbers of adhesive eggs that settle onto or cling to plant leaves and surfaces. Spawning may occur across multiple sessions over several days rather than in a single large spawning event, and a productive female can produce eggs repeatedly when in condition. Adults show no interest in the eggs after spawning and will readily consume any they encounter, so the eggs and fry are vulnerable from the moment of laying.
Breeding
Breeding the ember tetra in a dedicated aquarium is achievable with a little preparation. A small, well-planted tank with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water — pH around 6.0 to 7.0, temperature in the high 20s Celsius — and very gentle filtration (a sponge filter is ideal) provides suitable conditions. Fine-leaved plants such as Java moss, hornwort, or spawning mops give the fish something to deposit eggs on and provide visual refuge for both adults and any surviving fry.
Conditioned adults fed live foods will often spawn across several mornings; the eggs are small and adhesive and hatch within 24 to 36 hours at spawning temperatures. The tiny fry are initially very small and require appropriately sized first foods: infusoria or commercial liquid fry food in the first days, graduating to freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and micro worms as they grow. Because the adults provide no parental care and will eat eggs and fry on contact, breeders usually either remove the adults after spawning or transfer eggs and fry to a separate rearing vessel. Growth is slow and sexing of young fish requires patience; the full adult coloration in both sexes develops gradually over several months.
In the aquarium
The ember tetra's small size makes it ideal for nano aquariums of 5.5 US gal or more, though it will do equally well in larger planted tanks where its coloration creates a striking contrast with green foliage. It is an active, peaceful shoaling fish that should always be kept in groups — a minimum of six, and ideally ten or more, to see the natural schooling behavior and the full display of coloration that a school produces. Kept in too small a group it may be shy and pale, spending time hiding rather than swimming openly.
Water chemistry should lean soft and slightly acidic, in keeping with the Araguaia blackwater origin: pH from around 5.5 to 7.5 is tolerated, with temperatures between approximately 23 and 84 °F (Seriously Fish documents this range). The species does not tolerate poor water quality, and in a new or uncycled tank small tetras are among the first to show stress; a mature, stable system with regular small water changes is far more important than hitting precise chemistry numbers. Subdued, warm-spectrum lighting brings out the best color; heavy plant cover gives the fish confidence. Tankmates must be small and peaceful — other nano tetras, small rasboras, pygmy corydoras, small livebearers, and similarly sized fish are suitable; anything large enough to mouth a 1 in fish should be avoided.
Conservation
Hyphessobrycon amandae has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List as of the time of writing. The species' natural range in the Araguaia–Tocantins drainage of central Brazil means it occupies a basin that has seen substantial agricultural expansion, particularly soy farming and cattle ranching, with associated deforestation and stream sedimentation. The Araguaia basin is broadly considered a region of conservation concern for freshwater biodiversity.
However, the ember tetra's very wide availability in the hobby is almost entirely a product of commercial captive breeding — farms in Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia, and Brazil supply virtually all the fish sold in the trade, and wild-caught individuals are exceptionally rare in commerce. This means that hobby demand places essentially no pressure on wild populations, which is genuinely positive for the species. The more significant risks are indirect: watershed degradation and the poorly understood effects of large-scale land use change on the small-stream habitats where the species naturally occurs. A formal IUCN assessment would clarify its status in the wild, but in its absence the species should not be assumed to be without concern simply because captive stock is abundant.
