A delicate jewel from the rain-shadow savannas of Brazil's Amapá state, Hyphessobrycon amapaensis carries one of the more arresting colour schemes in a genus renowned for it: a bold black lateral stripe stretching from behind the gill cover to the caudal fin, crowned by a coral-red band and topped by a bright red crescent above the eye. Described by Zarski and Géry in 1998 from a 1997 expedition along the B156 highway, it remains the only three-banded flag tetra with a firm foothold in the aquarium hobby, bred reliably in captivity and assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon amapaensis was described by Zarski and Géry in 1998 on the basis of material collected during a Bitter and Hessfeld expedition in 1997. The type locality is a savanna stream along the B156 highway in Amapá State, northern Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer and Fong) records the valid name as Hyphessobrycon amapaensis Zarski & Géry, 1998, placed in the large characid genus Hyphessobrycon.

The genus Hyphessobrycon encompasses several hundred small, often brightly coloured tetras distributed across tropical South America and is one of the most species-rich genera within Characidae. H. amapaensis belongs to an informal grouping of flag tetras characterised by a tricolour lateral stripe of black, red, and a secondary band, of which it is distinguished as the only reliably available representative in the trade. The species epithet is a toponym derived from Amapá, the Brazilian state that comprises the entire known range of this fish.

Morphology

Hyphessobrycon amapaensis is a small, slender, laterally compressed tetra reaching approximately 1 in standard length under most accounts, with Fishipedia recording a maximum closer to 1.5 in SL. Aquarium Glaser notes an approximate total length of 1.5 in in well-grown individuals. The body form is typical of the genus: an elongated, fusiform profile with a relatively large eye and a small terminal mouth.

The colour pattern is the species' defining feature. An enlarged, solid black longitudinal stripe originates immediately behind the operculum and extends to the caudal peduncle, giving a bolder stripe than that seen in many congeners. Directly above this black stripe runs a coral-red to bright-red band, and a vivid red crescent marks the dorsal margin of the eye. Together these three elements — red crescent, red lateral band, and black stripe — constitute the 'three-banded flag' pattern from which the common name derives. The upper flank and dorsum are otherwise pale or faintly iridescent. Sexual dimorphism is modest: females are slightly larger with a visibly rounded belly during the spawning season, while males are slimmer.

Habitat

Hyphessobrycon amapaensis is endemic to Amapá State in the northernmost corner of Brazil, bordering French Guiana and the Atlantic coast. The species has been recorded from the rio Preto, rio Maracá, and rio Cajari basins — small savanna drainage systems rather than the rainforest creeks that characterise so many Hyphessobrycon species. The type locality is a savanna stream running alongside the B156 highway, an open-canopy environment subject to seasonal flooding and dry periods.

Water chemistry at collection sites is strikingly dilute and acidic: pH ranges of 5.3–6.5 are reported, with KH and GH below 1° dH and conductivity between 9 and 13 µS/cm. Temperature in the wild sits between 25 and 81 °F (77–81 °F). The water is described as clear to slightly brownish, consistent with low dissolved mineral loads and some tannin input from surrounding vegetation, running over a substrate of sand and fine gravel.

Feeding

In the wild Hyphessobrycon amapaensis is an omnivore feeding on insects, microcrustaceans, algae, and plant debris — a diet typical of small characids in shallow, warm savanna streams where diverse invertebrate and vegetable material is seasonally abundant.

In captivity it accepts a wide range of small prepared foods: good-quality fine-grade flake, micro-pellets, and crushed larger foods. Frozen and live offerings such as Daphnia, newly hatched brine shrimp, Cyclops, and micro-worms are readily taken and improve colour and conditioning. Being a small-mouthed species, particle size matters; oversized foods are ignored or spat out. Feeding little and often suits its naturally opportunistic foraging style.

Mating

Hyphessobrycon amapaensis is an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care, consistent with the reproductive strategy seen across most of the genus. Males display to females in short chasing sequences, intensifying colour and pressing their slimmer flanks against the female's rounded abdomen to stimulate release of eggs.

Spawning takes place among dense fine-leaved vegetation or spawning mops, into which small adhesive eggs are scattered. In a well-planted aquarium with a school of mixed sexes, spontaneous spawning will occur without special conditioning, though survival of fry in the community tank is poor unless eggs and early fry are protected. Condition fish on varied live and frozen foods for two to three weeks before a dedicated breeding attempt to maximise egg production.

Breeding

Breeding H. amapaensis follows the standard small Hyphessobrycon protocol. A dimly lit tank of around 10–15 US gal, with clumps of fine-leaved plants (Java moss, hornwort, or synthetic spawning mops), very soft and slightly acid water (pH 5.5–6.5, GH 1–3° dH, temperature 79–81 °F / 79–81 °F), and a conditioned pair or trio (one female, two males) will typically produce eggs within 24–48 hours.

Adults are indifferent to their eggs and will eat them if not removed; transferring the plants or mops to a separate shallow container after spawning is the standard approach. Eggs hatch in two to three days at typical breeding temperatures. The tiny fry hang near the water surface initially and require infusoria or a commercial liquid fry food for the first five to seven days, progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as they grow. Captive-bred stock has been maintained in the trade for many years and is generally of good quality and vigour.

In the aquarium

H. amapaensis is a peaceful, gregarious schooling fish at its best in a group of eight or more. Its small size (under 1.5 in) means a tank of 15 US gal or more comfortably houses a school; the actual swimming space and the availability of plants and sight-line breaks matter more than raw volume. A densely planted aquarium with dark substrate, some floating cover to reduce surface light, and a tannin-stained or near-neutral water column suits this savanna species well and brings out the vibrancy of the red and black banding.

Water chemistry should reflect the species' natural parameters: soft, slightly acid conditions (pH 5.5–6.5, GH 1–4° dH, temperature 75–81 °F / 75–81 °F) give the best colour and longevity, though captive-bred individuals are reportedly adaptable to moderately harder conditions. Tankmates should be similarly small and non-aggressive; nano-fish community tanks with other dwarf characids, small rasboras, pygmy corydoras, and similarly-scaled invertebrates work well. Lifespan in captivity is approximately five years under good conditions. Availability in the hobby is described as limited to specialist breeders rather than general retail, so sourcing may require patience.

Conservation

Hyphessobrycon amapaensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment published on 7 November 2018. The designation reflects that the species, though restricted to a relatively small area of Amapá State, does not meet threshold criteria for a more threatened category under the available data.

As an endemic of small savanna stream systems in a state that still retains large areas of natural habitat, the principal long-term risk lies in savanna degradation, agricultural expansion, and altered hydrology that could affect the very dilute, soft-water drainages the species depends on. The existence of a stable captive-breeding lineage in the hobby offers some insurance against catastrophic local decline, though ex-situ hobby populations are not a substitute for habitat protection. Aquarists are encouraged to source captive-bred stock, which is available from specialist breeders, rather than any occasional wild-caught imports.
