Jupiaba atypindi is a small, benthopelagic characid of the upper Negro River drainage in South America, occupying the Uraricoera, Surumu, and Cuminá rivers of the Guiana Shield region. It belongs to the genus Jupiaba, a group of Neotropical tetras distinguished from other Tetragonopterinae by a distinctive spine-like pelvic bone — a character that prompted its own subfamily, Jupiabinae, within the broader family. Assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN in 2021, J. atypindi is one of the lesser-known members of a genus that remains the focus of ongoing systematic study.

Taxonomy & naming

Jupiaba atypindi was described by Ana Lúcia Amaral Zanata in 1997 in her landmark paper establishing the genus Jupiaba — "Jupiaba, um novo gênero de Tetragonopterinae com osso pélvico em forma de espinho" — published in Iheringia, Série Zoologia. That paper reorganised a portion of the sprawling Tetragonopterinae into Jupiaba on the basis of a uniquely modified, spine-like pelvic bone not found in other members of the subfamily. Jupiaba atypindi was one of the species placed in the new genus at its inception; the authority is recorded as Zanata, 1997 in the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), which treats the name as valid and not a synonym.

The placement of Jupiaba has shifted with successive phylogenetic studies of the Characiformes. The genus is currently treated as the sole member of the subfamily Jupiabinae within the family Acestrorhamphidae (American tetras) in some higher classifications, though it continues to appear under Characidae in other references. The top-level family assignment follows the convention used by this atlas. Within Jupiabinae, J. atypindi can be distinguished from congeners by a combination of meristic and morphological characters detailed in Zanata's original description; without that paper's full key, precise identification in the field relies on range and collection locality.

Morphology

Jupiaba atypindi is a small, laterally compressed tetra of typical characid body form. No standard-length measurement is recorded in the available literature for this species specifically, and size data are sparse; as with most Jupiaba, adults are likely in the range of 1.5–3 in, though this figure should be treated with caution in the absence of confirmed measurements for J. atypindi itself.

The genus Jupiaba is defined in part by the distinctive spine-like pelvic bone, a synapomorphy that sets it apart from other tetragonopterine characids. The overall form is that of a slender, schooling fish with the family's characteristic adipose fin, a forked tail, and the small scales and lateral line typical of the group. No specific colour pattern data for J. atypindi are available in the reviewed sources; the species should not be assumed to show the vivid colouration of more familiar tetras, and aquarium records are essentially absent.

Habitat

Jupiaba atypindi is known from the upper Negro River basin of northern South America, specifically from the Uraricoera, Surumu, and Cuminá rivers — tributaries draining portions of the Guiana Shield in what is today the state of Roraima, Brazil. This region is characterised by blackwater and clearwater rivers originating on ancient Precambrian uplands, with water that is typically warm, soft, and acidic, though the Surumu system can trend toward clearer, somewhat less tinted water depending on locality.

FishBase categorises the species as benthopelagic, indicating it occupies the lower and mid water column near the substrate rather than being strictly surface-associated. The Guiana Shield rivers it inhabits are tropical throughout the year, with temperatures broadly in the 75–82 °F range. The broader ecology of J. atypindi — microhabitat preferences, seasonal movements, population structure — has not been studied in detail.

Feeding

FishBase records a trophic level of 2.9 ± 0.3 for Jupiaba atypindi, placing it at the lower omnivore level: a consumer of plant matter, detritus, and small invertebrates rather than a specialist predator. This is consistent with the feeding ecology documented for other Jupiaba species, which tend to take a mixed diet of arthropod fragments, organic detritus, algae, and fine plant material.

No detailed stomach-content study appears to be available for this species specifically. In the aquarium, closely related Jupiaba accept a varied diet of high-quality flake, small pellets, and frozen or live invertebrate foods such as Daphnia and brine shrimp, performing best on a diet that includes some live or frozen items alongside prepared foods.

Mating

No published observations of courtship behaviour in Jupiaba atypindi are available. As a member of the Characidae sensu lato and consistent with the reproductive biology documented across the Jupiaba genus, the species is presumed to be an egg-scatterer with no parental care — the modal reproductive strategy across Neotropical tetras.

Males in related Jupiaba species are reported to be similar in size to females, and sexual dimorphism in fin shape or coloration has not been prominently noted in the genus. Breeding is inferred to occur seasonally in the wild, likely linked to the flood-pulse cycle of the Guiana Shield river systems, but no specific data are on record for this species.

Breeding

Jupiaba atypindi has not been documented in the aquarium hobby in any substantive way, and no captive-breeding accounts were located in the reviewed sources. The species has essentially no commercial trade presence, with iNaturalist recording zero observations as of the cache date.

Based on general Characidae biology, breeding in the aquarium would likely follow the typical tetra pattern: egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, with small adhesive eggs, no parental care, and adults prone to consuming their own eggs. Water parameters for the Uraricoera and Surumu region suggest soft, slightly acidic to neutral, warm water would be appropriate for conditioning and spawning attempts, but all details here are inferred rather than recorded.

In the aquarium

Jupiaba atypindi is not a species encountered in the mainstream aquarium trade. No established care literature exists for it, and hobbyist records are absent from the reviewed sources. It would be appropriate to treat it as a species of scientific and atlas interest rather than as an aquarium subject in any practical sense.

Should specimens become available through specialist importers or researchers, care would presumably follow broad Jupiaba husbandry: a spacious, well-filtered aquarium with warm, soft to moderately hard water, subdued lighting, fine-leaved planting, and a varied omnivore diet. A peaceful community setting with similarly sized species from the same or comparable drainages would be a reasonable starting point. Experienced keepers of wild-caught Neotropical characids would be the most appropriate target audience for any future husbandry accounts.

Conservation

Jupiaba atypindi is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published on 04 March 2021. The listing reflects that the species does not currently meet the thresholds for a threatened category, though the data underpinning the assessment are limited given the species' obscurity in the scientific literature and its absence from citizen-science platforms.

The rivers it inhabits — the Uraricoera, Surumu, and Cuminá — lie within the Guiana Shield region of Roraima, Brazil, an area that has experienced increasing pressure from agriculture, mining (including illegal gold mining), and deforestation during recent decades. While the species' immediate status is not considered threatened, the health of the river systems it depends on is an ongoing concern for Amazonian biodiversity broadly, and the Least Concern rating should not be read as evidence that the population is large or well-studied.
