Jupiaba ajuricaba was described by Marinho and Lima in 2009; the valid name as listed by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Jupiaba ajuricaba (Marinho & Lima, 2009), with the parenthetical authority indicating the species was originally placed in a different genus before being erected in Jupiaba. The type locality is the rio Ajuricaba, a small tributary of the rio Negro in the Amazon basin of Brazil, at approximately 0.17°N, 69.13°W.
The genus Jupiaba belongs to the tribe Stevardiini within the vast family Characidae and currently encompasses several dozen species distributed across Amazonian and Guianan drainages. The genus is distinguished from closely related genera by a combination of dentition, squamation, and minor osteological characters, and its circumscription has shifted as phylogenetic work has refined the higher-level classification of characids. Jupiaba ajuricaba is one of the more recently described members of the genus and is not yet subject to synonymy or revisionary name changes.
Morphology
Jupiaba ajuricaba reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 3.5 in, making it a mid-sized species within a genus whose members range from small to moderately large. The body form follows the typical characid plan: laterally compressed and moderately deep, with a forked tail, an adipose fin, and the dentition characteristic of the genus — multicuspidate teeth on the premaxilla and dentary.
Detailed colour notes from wild specimens are not widely available in the hobbyist literature, as the species is rarely encountered in the trade. Like many Amazonian characids it is likely silvery to straw-coloured in life, with potential for a lateral stripe or caudal spot, though specific pigmentation data from the original description are not reproduced in secondary sources accessible for this account. Habitat

In the wild the species likely associates with the shallow, vegetated marginal zones common to mid-sized Amazonian characids.
Feeding

By analogy with other Jupiaba and mid-sized Amazonian characids broadly, the species is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore taking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and terrestrial insects falling onto the water surface — supplemented by plant material, algae, and detritus.
In the aquarium, related Jupiaba species accept quality dried foods readily and benefit from supplementation with frozen or live invertebrate prey. A varied diet maintains condition and should support natural colouration in those rare cases where the species is available to hobbyists.
Mating
No specific observations of mating behaviour in Jupiaba ajuricaba have been published in the accessible literature. The genus belongs to the Stevardiini, a tribe that includes many species with internal fertilisation and specialised structures for sperm transfer; however, not all stevardiins are internally fertilising, and the reproductive mode of Jupiaba specifically aligns with the more typical characid egg-scattering strategy.
Based on the biology of the broader genus, spawning is expected to involve open egg-scattering among fine-leaved aquatic plants or submerged vegetation, with no parental care. Eggs are likely adhesive or semi-adhesive, deposited among plants during chasing behaviour driven by males pursuing females. Sexual dimorphism, if present, is subtle — females of most characids become noticeably fuller in the abdomen when ripe, which is the main visual cue for readiness.
Breeding
Jupiaba ajuricaba has not been bred in captivity under documented conditions in the hobbyist literature, reflecting its rarity in the trade. If kept and conditioned, it would be expected to follow the typical small-to-mid-sized characid breeding pattern: egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops in slightly acidic, soft to moderately hard water, with no parental investment.
Adults would need to be separated from eggs promptly, as characids routinely consume their own spawn. In the aquarium
Jupiaba ajuricaba is not established in the aquarium hobby and is essentially absent from the ornamental fish trade. It may occasionally appear as an incidental import among mixed Amazonian characid shipments, but no dedicated culture or trade in the species exists as of this writing. Hobbyists who do acquire it should treat it as a mid-sized active characid requiring a well-filtered tank of at least 35.5–39.5 in in length, kept in a school of six or more conspecifics.
Given its origin across both blackwater and mixed-water Amazonian systems, it is likely adaptable to a moderate range of water conditions. A temperature around 75–81 °F, pH near neutral (6.5–7.5), and moderate hardness would be a reasonable starting point. Tankmates should be similarly sized and peaceful; very small fish may be at risk from a 3.5 in characid. A planted tank with open swimming space and some surface cover would suit its natural habitat well.
Conservation
Jupiaba ajuricaba is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, a status reflecting its wide distribution across the rio Negro, rio Solimões, and rio Tapajós basins — three of the Amazon's largest tributary systems. The broad range provides a buffer against localised threats that would imperil a more restricted species.
Nonetheless, the broader Amazon basin faces ongoing pressure from deforestation, agricultural runoff, mercury contamination from artisanal gold mining (particularly acute in the rio Negro watershed), hydropower development, and climate-driven changes to flood pulse timing. None of these threats is currently assessed as driving population-level declines in J. ajuricaba specifically, but they form the backdrop for all Amazonian freshwater fish conservation. The species' 2009 description is relatively recent, and further taxonomic and ecological study would strengthen the data underlying its IUCN assessment.
