Jupiaba keithi is a small characid from the river systems draining northeastern South America into the Atlantic — the Maroni and Mana rivers of French Guiana, adjacent Suriname, and the states of Pará and Amapá in Brazil. Reaching around 4 in standard length, it favours the active margins of upper river reaches: counter-current zones, calm cascades, and reaches with sandy bottoms where the current slows. Named in honour of aquatic biologist Dr. Philippe Keith of the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris, the species was originally described as Astyanax keithi before a genus-level revision placed it in Jupiaba, and it carries an IUCN Least Concern assessment reflecting a stable, wide-ranging population.

Taxonomy & naming

Jupiaba keithi was described by Jacques Géry, Paul Planquette, and Pierre-Yves Le Bail in 1996, in an account published in Cybium 20(1): 3–36. The type locality is the Maroni River, specifically at Crique Balaté in French Guiana. The species was originally placed in the large, heterogeneous genus Astyanax as Astyanax keithi, but subsequent generic revision recognised Jupiaba as a distinct group within Characidae, and the species is now listed under that genus — accounting for the parenthetical authority in the valid binomial Jupiaba keithi (Géry, Planquette & Le Bail, 1996).

Jupiaba is a mid-sized Neotropical characid genus distributed primarily across the Guiana Shield and lower Amazon basin. Its members share a set of characters that separate them from the core Astyanax assemblage, including details of dentition and body form, though the genus-level boundaries within the broader 'Astyanax complex' have been subject to ongoing revision. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) is the governing authority for the valid name.
