Taxonomy & naming
Jupiaba maroniensis was described by Jacques Géry, Paul Planquette, and Pierre-Yves Le Bail in 1996, with the type locality recorded as Antecume Pata, an Amerindian village at the confluence of the Litani and Maroni rivers in French Guiana. The species is placed in the genus Jupiaba, a neotropical characid genus erected by Zanata (1997) to accommodate a group of small Amazonian and Guianan characins that were previously distributed among several other genera. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Jupiaba maroniensis (Géry, Planquette & Le Bail, 1996), with the parenthetical authority reflecting that the original description predated the erection of Jupiaba and the species was later moved into that genus.
Jupiaba belongs to the family Characidae in the broad sense. The genus is diagnosed by a combination of meristic and morphological characters including dentition pattern and scale counts, and currently encompasses several dozen species ranging from Amazonian lowlands to Guiana Shield drainages. J. maroniensis is one of the Guiana Shield representatives and is most closely associated with the Maroni (Marowijne) drainage, which forms the border between French Guiana and Suriname.
Morphology
Jupiaba maroniensis reaches a maximum recorded total length of 2.5 in, making it a small to moderately sized tetra. Like other members of the genus it is a slender, laterally compressed characid with the family's characteristic single dorsal fin, forked caudal fin, and adipose fin. The body form is adapted to a pelagic, midwater lifestyle — streamlined enough for active swimming in flowing water, but not strongly torpedo-shaped.
Detailed colour notes for this species are sparse in the available literature. As with most Jupiaba, the basic pattern is likely silver to pale straw on the flanks with a darker dorsal surface, and potentially a faint lateral stripe or caudal spot — features common across the genus that serve as background coloration in dappled, tannin-stained forest water. Mating

Fry of small characids generally require very fine first foods such as infusoria or commercial liquid fry food before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp.
In the aquarium
Jupiaba maroniensis is an uncommon species in the aquarium hobby; it is not widely available in the trade and no dedicated care profile exists on major hobbyist databases. Its small size (to 2.5 in TL) and the habitat data suggest it would be maintained similarly to other small Guiana Shield tetras: a well-filtered aquarium with gentle flow, dark substrate, some floating plants or shading to subdue light, and water conditions replicating the soft, warm, acidic streams of its natural range.
As a midwater schooling fish, it would benefit from being kept in a group of six or more. Tankmates should be similarly sized and peaceful. The combination of soft, acidic water and smaller tank size typical of tetra setups — along with the absence of aggressive or predatory companions — would recreate the species' forest-stream ecology reasonably well. Because captive-bred stock is unlikely to be available, any specimens in the trade would almost certainly be wild-caught, reinforcing the importance of appropriate water chemistry and a quarantine period on arrival.
Conservation
Jupiaba maroniensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in 2022 and based on data from 2020. The population is considered stable, with the assessors assuming more than 10,000 mature individuals. The species' distribution across the Maroni River drainage of French Guiana and Suriname is not considered narrowly restricted, and no major population decline is inferred.
The primary documented threat within the species' range is gold mining, which is extensive across parts of French Guiana and Suriname and causes sedimentation, chemical contamination (notably mercury), and habitat degradation in forest streams. The IUCN assessment notes no specific monitoring scheme is in place for the species. The Least Concern status reflects current stability rather than the absence of pressure, and the ongoing expansion of artisanal gold mining in the Guiana Shield represents a long-term concern for the freshwater biodiversity of these drainages.
