Taxonomy & naming
Jupiaba meunieri was described in 1996 by Jacques Géry, Paul Planquette, and Pierre-Yves Le Bail from material collected in French Guiana and Suriname. The genus Jupiaba was established to accommodate a group of Neotropical characids that had previously been lumped under the broad and heterogeneous genus Astyanax. Géry et al. segregated them on the basis of a suite of osteological and dentition characters, and Jupiaba meunieri was among the founding members of the new genus.
Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Jupiaba meunieri (Géry, Planquette & Le Bail, 1996), with the authority in parentheses because the species was originally placed in a different generic combination. The genus Jupiaba belongs to the family Characidae and has historically been referred to the subfamily Jupiabinae or to the Acestrorhamphidae in some classifications; the family-level placement has shifted across revisions, and the Catalog of Fishes treats it within the broad Characidae.
The species is named in honour of François Jean Meunier (b. 1942), a fish osteologist at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris, who participated in the collection of the holotype and contributed substantially to the osteological framework that underpinned the genus-level revision.
Morphology
Jupiaba meunieri is a slender, moderately compressed characid reaching approximately 3.5 in standard length in males and unsexed specimens. The body form is typical of the genus: a streamlined, torpedo-shaped fish with a relatively small head, a terminal mouth bearing a complement of cusped teeth on both jaws, and a forked caudal fin. The species carries the adipose fin characteristic of most characids.
Color in life is not extensively documented in the published literature, but members of Jupiaba typically show a silvery body with a dark lateral stripe or midlateral pigmentation, a caudal spot or blotch, and iridescent flanks that vary with light angle and condition. Detailed counts of scales, fin rays, and gill rakers are provided in the original description and serve as the primary characters distinguishing J. meunieri from its congeners, though specific meristic data are not reproduced here.
Habitat
Jupiaba meunieri is recorded from Suriname, specifically from the Coppename River and its tributary Adampada Creek. The Coppename drains the central interior of Suriname, flowing northward through forested terrain of the Guiana Shield before reaching the Atlantic coast. The species favours the middle and upper reaches of rivers, where current is strong and the bottom is composed of sand and rock.
This rheophilic tendency — a preference for well-oxygenated, fast-moving water — is consistent with the hard substrate habitats typical of many Jupiaba species. No specific temperature or pH data for the Coppename system are recorded in the available sources, though Guiana Shield rivers in this region are generally soft and slightly acidic to neutral, and ambient temperatures reflect the lowland tropical climate of coastal Suriname.
Feeding
No detailed stomach-content analyses for Jupiaba meunieri appear in the accessible literature. Members of the genus Jupiaba are broadly omnivorous in the characid manner, taking a mix of small invertebrates — aquatic insects, larvae, and small crustaceans — together with plant material and detritus available in the current.
The species' preference for fast-flowing, rocky-bottomed habitats suggests that drifting invertebrates and benthic macroinvertebrates associated with riffle zones are likely dietary staples, as is the case with rheophilic characids across the Neotropics.
Mating
No specific observations of mating behaviour have been published for Jupiaba meunieri. Jupiaba species are presumed to follow the general characid reproductive pattern of egg-scattering open spawning, with adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved aquatic plants or over gravel substrates in flowing water. No parental care is expected; the adults do not guard or tend the eggs following spawning.
Sexual dimorphism in Jupiaba is typically subtle, with females appearing fuller in the abdomen when gravid. Whether J. meunieri shows any additional secondary sexual characters has not been documented in the available literature.
Breeding
Jupiaba meunieri has not been reported as bred in captivity in any source available at the time of writing. The reproductive biology can be inferred from the genus: like other small characids of the Guiana Shield, the species almost certainly spawns by scattering small, adhesive eggs over substrates, with no parental investment following fertilisation. Incubation period and fry size are not documented.
For aquarists wishing to attempt breeding, the species' rheophilic habits suggest that good water movement, well-oxygenated conditions, and clean gravel or fine-leaved plants as spawning substrate would be appropriate starting conditions, pending species-specific husbandry data.
In the aquarium
Jupiaba meunieri is rarely encountered in the aquarium hobby and does not appear to be traded with any regularity. Its requirement for well-oxygenated, fast-flowing water makes it better suited to a dedicated riverine biotope setup than a typical community tank; a long aquarium with a powerhead or circulation pump to replicate current, open swimming space, and a sandy or rocky bottom would approximate its natural microhabitat.
As a social characid it would likely be most comfortable in a small group rather than kept singly. In the absence of specific husbandry reports, care parameters drawn from similar Guiana Shield characids — soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water, temperatures in the range typical of lowland Suriname (roughly 75–82 °F) — represent a reasonable starting point. Data sparse; the species is essentially unrepresented in the hobby literature.
Conservation
Jupiaba meunieri is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 04 March 2021. The Least Concern listing reflects the absence of evidence of significant range-wide decline; the species is recorded from the Coppename River system in Suriname, a drainage that remains relatively intact compared with heavily disturbed river systems elsewhere in South America.
The interior of Suriname retains large areas of forested, low-disturbance catchment, and the Coppename River has not been subject to the large-scale damming or pollution that has degraded habitats for riverine fish in many other Neotropical drainages. No specific threats to J. meunieri are identified in the conservation literature, though continued monitoring of Guiana Shield ichthyofauna is warranted as land-use pressure in the region grows.
