Taxonomy & naming
Jupiaba minor was first described by Travassos in 1964 as Deuterodon minor (Travassos, 1964: 539, figs. 1–4), based on material collected from the Rio Cachimbo, near the FAB Airport in the state of Pará, Brazil, at approximately 9°22'S 54°5'W. The holotype is deposited as MNRJ 9172. In 1997, Zanata revised the genus-level arrangement of several characids and transferred the species to Jupiaba, the combination under which it is currently recognised by the Catalog of Fishes.
The genus Jupiaba belongs to the family Characidae and encompasses a group of small to medium Neotropical characids distributed across the Amazon and Orinoco basins and adjacent systems. Zanata (1997) placed Jupiaba minor within a distributional framework that includes the Xingu drainage, though its known range centres on the Cachimbo River basin of Pará. Because the original description was published in Deuterodon, the authority is cited with parentheses: (Travassos, 1964).
Morphology
Jupiaba minor is a small, slender characid with the typical compressed, fusiform body plan of the group. Exact maximum length records for this species are not well documented in the literature, but like other small Jupiaba it is presumed to remain modest in size. The genus is characterised by a combination of features including the presence of a humeral spot, a lateral band pattern, and dentition that separates it from closely related characids.
Data specifically documenting the colouration, fin formula, or meristics of Jupiaba minor in detail are sparse in publicly available sources. The original description by Travassos (1964) provides the primary morphological account, illustrated with figures 1–4. The species is benthopelagic in habit, occupying the lower to mid water column of its freshwater habitat.
Habitat
Jupiaba minor is a freshwater species recorded from the Cachimbo River basin in the state of Pará, Brazil, with the type locality at the Rio Cachimbo near the FAB Airport. The Cachimbo River drains a plateau region in south-central Pará, and the surrounding landscape is characterised by Cerrado-Amazon transitional savanna and forest. Zanata (1997) associated the species with a distribution code spanning the Xingu basin, suggesting its range may extend into or overlap with that larger drainage.
Water conditions at the type locality in the Cachimbo region are consistent with clear, typically low-conductivity Amazonian tributary streams, likely warm, acidic to neutral, and softwater in character — reflecting the geology of the central Brazilian plateau. FishBase characterises the species as a subtropical freshwater fish, placing it within benthopelagic habitat.
Feeding
No specific diet data for Jupiaba minor are documented in the available literature. As a small characid from Amazonian freshwater tributaries, it is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore in the manner typical of the family, likely taking small invertebrates, aquatic insects, and organic particles from the water column and substrate.
In captivity, small Neotropical characids of similar ecology generally adapt well to a varied diet of high-quality flake or micro-pellet foods supplemented with live and frozen offerings such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm. Given the paucity of published feeding data for this species, husbandry recommendations are extrapolated from the broader genus and family.
Mating
No mating behaviour has been documented specifically for Jupiaba minor in the scientific or hobbyist literature. Based on the general biology of the genus and family, the species is presumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner without parental care — the dominant reproductive mode in Characidae.
Small characids in this group typically engage in brief chasing and lateral-display behaviours prior to spawning, with fertilisation occurring as eggs and sperm are released simultaneously into the water column or over fine-leaved vegetation. Adhesive eggs may settle among submerged plants or substrate debris. No courtship specialisations are reported for Jupiaba minor specifically.
Breeding
Breeding in captivity has not been documented for Jupiaba minor in sources available at this time. By analogy with other small Neotropical characids, the species would be expected to scatter small, adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved vegetation or over a soft substrate, with no parental care following spawning.
Typical Amazonian characid breeding conditions involve soft, slightly acidic water at temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius, reduced lighting, and the presence of spawning substrate such as fine-leaved plants or synthetic mops. Eggs would likely hatch within 24–48 hours under appropriate temperatures, with fry becoming free-swimming within a further few days. First foods for fry of comparable species are typically infusoria and rotifers, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp as the fish develop.
In the aquarium
Jupiaba minor is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade and there is little documented hobbyist experience with the species. It does not appear to have an established common name in English. General care for small Jupiaba follows the pattern applicable to other peaceful, schooling small Neotropical characids: a well-planted aquarium with subdued lighting, dark substrate, and soft to moderately soft, slightly acidic to neutral water in the range of 75–81 °F (75–81 °F) would be appropriate.
A school of at least six individuals is recommended to promote natural behaviour and reduce stress. Tankmates should be similarly sized and non-aggressive; other small characids, corydoras, and dwarf cichlids from South American drainages make compatible companions. The species' obscurity means that any captive specimens are likely to be wild-caught imports rather than tank-bred stock, and acclimatisation to aquarium water chemistry should be managed carefully.
Conservation
Jupiaba minor is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, as reported by FishBase. The species' relatively limited known distribution — centred on the Cachimbo River basin in Pará, Brazil — does not in itself trigger a threatened category under IUCN criteria when no severe population decline or habitat loss has been documented specifically for it.
The Cachimbo plateau and its associated river systems face the broader pressures common to the southern Amazon transition zone, including agricultural expansion, deforestation, and associated water-quality changes. However, no targeted conservation actions or monitoring programmes are publicly documented for this species. Given the scarcity of distributional and ecological data, the actual population status of Jupiaba minor remains incompletely characterised.
