Taxonomy & naming
Jupiaba mucronata was originally described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1909 as Astyanax mucronatus, with the type locality given as Tumatumari, above the falls, in British Guiana (present-day Guyana). The holotype is deposited at the Field Museum of Natural History (FMNH 53520). The species was later transferred to the genus Jupiaba Zanata, 1997, where it sits under the current valid name Jupiaba mucronata (Eigenmann, 1909); the parenthetical authority reflects that transfer from the original genus.
Jupiaba is placed within the family Characidae — one of the most species-rich families in freshwater ichthyology — and belongs to the broad assemblage of small South American characids sometimes grouped informally as the tetras. The genus was erected by Zanata (1997) on the basis of spine-like pelvic-girdle features that distinguish it from allied genera; its distribution code 310 in that revision encompasses the Guiana Shield and adjacent lowland drainages. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name.

The broader placement of Jupiaba within Characidae has been subject to ongoing phylogenetic revision as molecular data accumulate for Neotropical characids, but the genus itself has remained stable.
Morphology
Jupiaba mucronata is a small, slender-bodied characid reaching approximately 1.5 in standard length according to FishBase. Like other Jupiaba, it is laterally compressed with a typical tetra body plan: a moderately forked tail, an adipose fin, and a relatively short anal fin. The genus is defined in part by its distinctively spine-like first pelvic-fin ray and associated bony features of the pelvic girdle.
The most visually conspicuous feature is a well-defined, bullet-shaped humeral spot — a dark blotch immediately behind the gill cover — which gives rise to the specific epithet. Beyond this marking, the body is described as silvery with typical characid patterning. Detailed meristic and morphometric data for this species are sparse in the accessible literature, and a full re-description has not been widely disseminated. Given the small adult size, it would appear unremarkable in form, fitting comfortably within the diversity of small schooling tetras from Guiana Shield drainages.
Habitat
The type locality for Jupiaba mucronata is Tumatumari, a site on the Potaro River above Tumatumari Falls, within the Essequibo River system of Guyana. The Potaro drains the interior Guiana Shield, a region of ancient granite and sandstone uplands with generally soft, acidic, low-conductivity blackwater and clearwater rivers.
A Characidae checklist sourced via ResearchGate also records the species from the Cachimbo River basin, Pará State, Brazil, in addition to coastal rivers of Guyana — indicating the species' range spans parts of the broader Guiana Shield lowland and adjacent Amazonian fringe. FishBase classifies it as a freshwater, benthopelagic tropical species. Specific micro-habitat preferences — substrate type, association with vegetation or woody debris, depth range — have not been documented in the accessible literature. The combination of Guiana Shield drainages and adjacent lowland rivers suggests affinity for warm, soft to moderately acidic tropical freshwater typical of that region.
Feeding
No specific dietary data have been published for Jupiaba mucronata. By analogy with other small Jupiaba and related Guiana Shield characids of similar size and body form, the species is likely an opportunistic microcarnivore or omnivore, taking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and terrestrial insects falling to the surface — as the primary food source, with incidental plant material or organic detritus.
In an aquarium context, small Jupiaba are typically adaptable feeders that accept fine-grade dried foods, small frozen items such as Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and bloodworm, and live foods of appropriate size. Given its Data Deficient status and rarity in the hobby, direct observations of feeding behaviour in captivity are essentially absent from the literature.
Mating
No published observations of mating behaviour exist for Jupiaba mucronata specifically. Characids of this size and ecology are generally egg-scatterers: males pursue receptive females through fine-leaved vegetation or open water, and pairs or groups release non-adhesive to slightly adhesive eggs among plants, roots, or over the substrate, with no parental care following spawning.
Some Jupiaba species produce adhesive eggs that adhere briefly to fine-leaved plants or spawning substrates before falling; the degree of adhesion varies by species. Spawning in small Guiana Shield tetras typically coincides with the onset of the wet season and associated changes in water temperature, conductivity, and photoperiod, which serve as environmental triggers. Whether J. mucronata follows this seasonal pattern has not been documented.
Breeding
Jupiaba mucronata has not been reported in the aquarium literature as a species bred in captivity, and no breeding records appear in accessible hobby or scientific sources. As a small, egg-scattering characid, the general approach applicable to related Guiana Shield tetras would involve a well-conditioned pair or small group, soft and slightly acidic warm water (reflecting the likely natural conditions of the Essequibo and Cachimbo systems), fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, and removal of adults after spawning to prevent egg predation.
Eggs in small tetras typically hatch within 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures, with larvae becoming free-swimming a few days after hatching. First foods for the fry of small characids are infusoria and similar microfoods, progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. In the absence of specific records, any captive breeding attempt with this species would be exploratory.
In the aquarium
Jupiaba mucronata is essentially absent from the aquarium trade and appears in no mainstream hobby literature as a kept species. Given its small size — under 2 in — and Guiana Shield origins, it would likely do well in a soft, slightly acidic, warm aquarium (approximately 75–82 °F, pH 5.5–7.0) with subdued lighting, dark substrate, and leaf litter or driftwood to replicate the tannin-stained waters of its probable native habitat.
Like most small tetras, it would be expected to be peaceful, schooling, and suitable for a community of similarly sized, non-aggressive species. The near-total absence of records from the hobby means that practical care notes — compatibility, sensitivity, minimum group size — are speculative. Any aquarist acquiring this species would be among the first to document its captive requirements, and records shared with the broader community would have genuine scientific value given its Data Deficient conservation status.
Conservation
Jupiaba mucronata was assessed as Data Deficient (DD) by the IUCN Red List in 2025 (taxon ID 176158037, assessment ID 176158231). The Data Deficient classification reflects a lack of sufficient information on the species' distribution, population size, and ecological requirements to make a reliable assessment of extinction risk — not an indication that the species is necessarily secure.
The Guiana Shield is generally considered one of the better-preserved large freshwater ecosystems in South America, but localized threats including artisanal and industrial gold mining (which introduces mercury and destabilises riverbanks), deforestation in catchment areas, and hydrological alteration affect watercourses throughout the region. The Potaro River system in Guyana, home to the type locality, lies within the Kaieteur National Park area, affording some degree of habitat protection. Systematic surveys to determine the species' actual distribution, abundance, and habitat condition would be necessary before a more informative IUCN category could be assigned.
