Jupiaba ocellata was described in 1996 by Géry, Planquette and Le Bail, placed in the genus Jupiaba — a South American characid genus established to accommodate a group of species from the Amazon and Guiana Shield previously scattered across Astyanax and allied genera. Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Jupiaba ocellata (Géry, Planquette & Le Bail, 1996); the parenthetical authority indicates the original description was in a genus other than the current placement, which is standard for the many characids rearranged in recent decades of revisionary work.
The genus Jupiaba belongs to the family Characidae in its broadest sense, which remains the largest family of freshwater fishes. Within that diverse family, Jupiaba occupies the Guiana Shield and parts of the upper Amazon basin, typically in clear, fast-moving Blackwater or Clearwater drainages. J. ocellata is one of several Jupiaba species from the coastal rivers of the Guianas and has its type locality in the Oyapock River system on the French Guiana–Brazil border.
Morphology
Jupiaba ocellata reaches a maximum recorded size of 4.5 in total length, making it one of the larger members of its genus. The body plan is the typical compressed, torpedo-shaped characid form suited for life in flowing water. The most diagnostic external feature is the humeral spot — a dark, eye-like marking (the ocellus) positioned just behind the gill cover on the shoulder of the fish, after which the species is named.
Beyond the diagnostic humeral spot, the general coloration and scale pattern follow the genus norms: a silvery body with the lateral line and scale rows lending a faint reticulated sheen. The species prefers areas with rapid water movement — riffle and run habitats typical of Guianan highland rivers — and FishBase characterises it as pelagic and probably solitary, suggesting it occupies the open water column rather than holding in dense cover. Water chemistry in these rivers is typically soft, acidic (low pH), and low in suspended sediment. Part of the species' range lies within the Guianan Amazonian National Park, which provides a degree of habitat protection.

Jupiaba ocellata is not an established aquarium fish and is rarely if ever available in the hobby. Its large size — up to 4.5 in — and preference for fast, clear, oxygenated water with low nutrient levels make it a specialist subject rather than a community-tank species. It would require a spacious aquarium with strong flow and high water quality to replicate the Oyapock River conditions it naturally inhabits.
Should it become available, it would be best suited to a species tank or a biotope setup replicating a Guiana Shield river: white or light sand substrate, minimal decor, powerful filtration creating significant current, and water that is soft, acidic, and low in organic load. Its probable solitary tendency (noted by FishBase) suggests it may not be gregarious and could hold territory against conspecifics in confined spaces. Data on temperament with other species are lacking.
Conservation
Jupiaba ocellata is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment conducted on 21 December 2020 by Taphorn and Rodríguez-Olarte. The population trend is stable. The species' range in the Oyapock River benefits from partial protection within the Guianan Amazonian National Park, one of the largest protected areas in the Neotropics.
The primary documented threat within its range is gold mining (artisanal and small-scale), which can cause sedimentation, mercury contamination, and riparian habitat destruction in Guianan river systems. The IUCN notes a generation length of approximately two years. While Least Concern status reflects the current stability of the population, the ongoing pressure of illegal and legal mining activity in French Guiana and the Amapá state of Brazil means the Oyapock's water quality requires continued monitoring.
