Jupiaba paranatinga is a small, slender characid first described in 2009 from the rio Teles Pires, the upper drainage of the rio Tapajós in the Brazilian states of Pará and Mato Grosso. Reaching barely 1.5 in in standard length, it is distinguished among its congeners by a pair of vertically elongated humeral blotches and a conspicuous dark caudal spot that extends across the median caudal-fin rays — a combination of markings that, together with its meristic counts, separates it cleanly from all other known Jupiaba. Its name recalls the Tupi name for its home river, and it remains a microendemic of the upper Tapajós system assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

Jupiaba paranatinga was described by Netto-Ferreira, Zanata, Birindelli and Sousa in 2009, in a paper published in Zootaxa. The type locality is the rio Teles Pires, a major tributary of the rio Tapajós in the Brazilian Amazon, and the holotype and paratypes are deposited in the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo (MZUSP). The valid name as recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Jupiaba paranatinga Netto-Ferreira, Zanata, Birindelli & Sousa, 2009.

The genus Jupiaba belongs to the family Characidae, the largest family of freshwater fishes. Within Jupiaba, J. paranatinga is separated from congeners by a combination of 34–35 lateral line scales, 18–20 branched anal-fin rays, two vertically elongated humeral blotches, a conspicuous dark spot on the caudal peduncle extending over 8–10 median caudal-fin rays, a large eye (diameter 43.7–46.9% of head length), and a moderate body depth (31.3–35.5% of standard length). No subsequent revisions have altered the species' placement or synonymised it with another taxon.

Morphology

Jupiaba paranatinga is a small, streamlined characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 1.5 in. The body is moderately deep, with a depth equal to roughly 31–35% of standard length, and the head is notable for its large eye — the eye diameter comprises 44–47% of head length, giving the fish a big-eyed appearance typical of many small Amazonian tetras that inhabit turbid or low-light microhabitats.

The most diagnostic external features are two vertically elongated humeral blotches — dark marks on the shoulder immediately behind the operculum — and a bold, concentrated caudal spot situated at the posterior end of the caudal peduncle, spreading across 8–10 of the median caudal-fin rays. The lateral line runs through 34–35 scales. The anal fin carries 18–20 branched rays. Beyond these diagnostic marks, the general colouration follows the pattern common in small characids: a silvery body with darker dorsal pigmentation and translucent fins.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the rio Teles Pires and the Tapajós drainage more broadly, with confirmed records running from Jacareacanga in southern Pará State south to Itaúba in northern Mato Grosso State — a latitudinal range of approximately 9°S to 12°S, 55°W to 57°W. Biogeographical analyses confirm its restriction to the upper Tapajós basin, with the Teles Pires and Jamanxim drainages forming the core of its known distribution.

FishBase categorises the species as a pelagic, freshwater, tropical fish — consistent with the open-water or near-surface habits common in small Jupiaba. The Teles Pires is a clearwater to mixed river system flowing northward through cerrado and transitional Amazonian forest before entering the main Tapajós channel. Specific microhabitat data for J. paranatinga (substrate preference, canopy cover, depth range) have not been published.

Feeding

No detailed stomach-content studies have been published for Jupiaba paranatinga. FishBase records a trophic level of 2.9 ± 0.4, derived from data for closely related Jupiaba species. A trophic level near 3.0 is consistent with an omnivorous diet dominated by small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and terrestrial insects falling to the water surface — with a secondary plant or algal component.

This broadly omnivorous feeding ecology is typical of small characids throughout the genus Jupiaba and the wider Tapajós fauna. In an aquarium setting, the species would be expected to accept small prepared foods, micro-pellets, and live or frozen items such as newly hatched brine shrimp, Daphnia, and micro-worms, though no captive-feeding observations have been reported in the literature.

Mating

No published observations of mating behaviour exist for Jupiaba paranatinga in the wild or in captivity. Based on the reproductive biology of related Jupiaba species and the broader pattern within small characids, the species is presumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner without parental care.

Small Jupiaba are generally expected to scatter adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or over the substrate in moving water, with fertilisation and egg attachment occurring during brief paired spawning runs. Sexual dimorphism in this species has not been described in the literature; any morphological differences between males and females (body depth, fin shape, condition) await documentation.

Breeding

No captive breeding of Jupiaba paranatinga has been reported in the aquarium literature or hobbyist sources. By analogy with other small, egg-scattering characids, the species would likely spawn over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, depositing small adhesive eggs that receive no parental attention. Eggs and fry would need to be separated from adults to prevent predation.

Given the species' small adult size and microendemic distribution, it is rarely if ever encountered in the ornamental fish trade, and practical captive-breeding data are absent. Water conditions for any breeding attempt would logically mirror the species' Tapajós basin origin — warm, soft to moderately mineralised, slightly acidic to neutral water — but these parameters remain unconfirmed for this species specifically.

In the aquarium

Jupiaba paranatinga is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. It is not recorded in the commercial ornamental trade, and its tiny adult size of under 1.5 in SL would place it among the smallest of any Jupiaba were it to appear. Hobbyists working with other small Jupiaba species generally keep them in soft, slightly acidic to neutral water at Amazonian temperatures (75–82 °F), in well-planted tanks with subdued lighting and gentle flow.

Its fishing vulnerability is rated low (10/100) by FishBase, consistent with a small species with a restricted range and limited commercial interest. Any aquarist who did obtain specimens would be advised to treat it as a delicate microtetra: peaceful, best kept in a conspecific group, sensitive to poor water quality, and requiring small live or frozen foods to thrive.

Conservation

Jupiaba paranatinga is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment conducted on 7 November 2018. The evaluation notes no immediate documented threats and describes the population as stable within its range. The species is a microendemic of the upper Tapajós system, restricted to the rio Teles Pires and adjacent Tapajós drainages in Pará and Mato Grosso states, Brazil.

Although Least Concern is the current status, narrow endemism is inherently a risk factor. The upper Tapajós basin has been subject to hydroelectric development pressure — the Teles Pires river has been the site of dam projects — which can alter flow regimes, flood spawning habitat, and fragment fish populations. The species' restricted range means any significant alteration to the Teles Pires system could affect a substantial portion of its global population. Continued monitoring of the upper Tapajós ichthyofauna is warranted.
