Jupiaba pinnata was originally described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1909 from material collected at Amatuk on the lower Potaro River, British Guiana — now Guyana. The type specimen is held in the Museum of Comparative Zoology (MCZ) collection, and the species is documented in Plazi TreatmentBank from that original work.
The genus Jupiaba was established by Alberto Zanata in his 1997 monograph reviewing the group, at which time several species previously placed elsewhere in the Characidae were transferred to Jupiaba. The parenthetical authority — (Eigenmann, 1909) — signals that the species has been moved from its original generic placement into Jupiaba since its description. Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) recognises the valid name as Jupiaba pinnata (Eigenmann, 1909).
The specific epithet pinnata derives from the Latin pinna, meaning fin or feather, likely alluding to a fin character that distinguished the species in Eigenmann's original diagnosis. The genus name Jupiaba is drawn from an indigenous Brazilian word, as noted in Zanata's monograph.
Morphology

Habitat
