Jupiaba potaroensis is a small characid endemic to the Potaro River basin of Guyana — a river that descends through the Pakaraima Mountains and over Kaieteur Falls before joining the Essequibo. First described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1909 from specimens collected at Tumatumari on the Potaro, the species has remained a specialist curiosity, rarely encountered in the aquarium trade and known primarily from its type series. Taxonomy & naming

Jupiaba potaroensis was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1909 from material collected at Tumatumari on the Potaro River in what was then British Guiana, now Guyana. The holotype is deposited at the Field Museum of Natural History (FMNH 52863). The species is placed in the genus Jupiaba Zanata, 1997, a characid genus of the tribe Stevardiinae that ranges across northern South America and the Guiana Shield. Because the original description placed it in a different genus and the name was subsequently transferred to Jupiaba, the authority is rendered in parentheses: (Eigenmann, 1909).

Jupiaba is a moderately speciose genus of small, often silvery characids distinguished by a combination of lateral line, scale-count, and dentition characters. Within the genus, J. potaroensis is a Guiana Shield endemic tied exclusively to the Potaro drainage; its closest relatives and the full extent of intrageneric relationships remain incompletely resolved. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, Fricke & van der Laan) treats Jupiaba potaroensis (Eigenmann, 1909) as the valid name.

Morphology

Jupiaba potaroensis is a small, slender characid. Published data from FishBase and the primary literature indicate a modest maximum size; the species is benthopelagic in habit, occupying the water column near the substrate in its river habitat. Like most Jupiaba, it possesses the typical characid body plan: a compressed, elongate-to-moderately-deep form, a forked caudal fin, an adipose fin, and small to moderate scales along the lateral line.

Detailed meristic data for this species specifically are sparse in the secondary literature. Available references describe it as a small freshwater fish of tropical Guyana, consistent with the general size range of the genus. Habitat

The species is endemic to the Potaro River basin, a tributary of the Essequibo River system in Guyana, South America. The Potaro is a river of the Guiana Highlands, rising in the Pakaraima Mountains and flowing through diverse habitats including the plateau above Kaieteur Falls and the lowland forested stretches below. The type locality of J. potaroensis — Tumatumari — lies in the lower Potaro, a zone of rocky rapids and forested riverbanks.

As a tropical freshwater fish of the Guiana Shield, the species inhabits blackwater to clear-water riverine environments typical of the region: warm, soft, acidic to neutral water. The Potaro's chemistry varies with reach and season, ranging from blackwater conditions in forest-shaded stretches to clearer water in the upper rocky reaches. FishBase categorises the species as benthopelagic and freshwater, consistent with a mid-water to near-substrate lifestyle in flowing riverine habitats.

Feeding

For any aquarist who obtains specimens, standard small-characid breeding protocol would apply: a separate breeding tank, soft and slightly acidic water mimicking the Potaro's natural chemistry, fine-leaved plants or spawning mops as egg substrate, dim lighting, and prompt removal of adults after spawning. Fry would require infusoria or equivalent micro-foods at first feeding. Given the species' Endangered status, any successful captive propagation would carry conservation significance.

In the aquarium

Jupiaba potaroensis is essentially absent from the ornamental fish trade. Its restricted endemic range in a single Guyanese river basin, combined with low commercial collection interest, means that hobbyists are exceedingly unlikely to encounter it. No established husbandry literature exists for the species.

Should specimens ever become available, care would follow the requirements of other small Guiana Shield characids: a planted aquarium with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water, warm temperatures in the tropical range, gentle filtration, and a peaceful community. The species would be expected to be a schooling fish benefiting from conspecific company. Its Endangered status means that any specimens should ideally be sourced from captive-bred stock and kept with an eye toward conservation breeding rather than purely decorative purposes.

Conservation

Jupiaba potaroensis is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 21 December 2020 under criteria B1ab(iii). The listing reflects the species' extremely restricted range — confined to the Potaro River basin in Guyana — combined with ongoing habitat loss and degradation within that range. The Potaro basin faces pressures from mining activity (notably gold and diamond extraction in the Guiana Shield), deforestation, and associated sedimentation and water-quality changes.

Prior to the 2020 assessment, the species had been listed as Data Deficient, reflecting limited survey data. The upgrade to Endangered followed improved range assessment and documentation of threats. SHOAL Conservation identifies it as a conservation-priority freshwater fish for Guyana. The species has no known captive population, no established ex-situ conservation programme, and no protected-area coverage specifically designed for its benefit. Its long-term security depends on the health of the Potaro River system as a whole — particularly the forested catchment above and around the type locality at Tumatumari.
