Jupiaba yarina is a small characid endemic to the Arinos and Juruena river system in the Tapajós drainage of central Brazil. Described by Zanata in 1997 from the Rio Arinos with a type specimen (MZUSP 50662) measuring 2.5 in standard length, this modestly-sized fish belongs to a genus that takes its name from an indigenous Brazilian word and represents one of several Jupiaba species scattered across the rivers of lowland South America. Reaching roughly 3 in SL at maximum, it is among the more compact members of its genus and, like its congeners, is known primarily from ichthyological survey material rather than from detailed natural-history study.

Taxonomy & naming

Jupiaba yarina was described by Angela Zanata in 1997 from specimens collected in the Rio Arinos, a major tributary of the Rio Juruena in the upper Tapajós River drainage of Mato Grosso state, Brazil. The holotype, deposited at the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo (MZUSP 50662), measured 2.5 in standard length. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Jupiaba yarina Zanata, 1997; the species has not been transferred to another genus and the authority is written without parentheses.

The genus Jupiaba was established by Zanata (1997) to accommodate a cluster of Amazonian and Guianan characids previously distributed among other genera. The genus name is drawn from an indigenous Brazilian word. Within Characidae, Jupiaba falls in the broad neotropical subfamily grouping sometimes referred to informally as 'true tetras' or 'characins,' though phylogenetic arrangements continue to be revised. Jupiaba yarina is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of morphometric and meristic characters; detailed diagnostic details are in the original description.

The specific epithet 'yarina' refers to the yarina palm (Phytelephas), whose fruits and seeds appear in riparian habitats of western Amazonia; the name may allude to the vegetated floodplain margins of the Arinos-Juruena system where the species was collected.

On the basis of family-level biology, breeding would be expected to follow the standard characid pattern: egg-scattering over fine-leaved vegetation or substrate, with small adhesive eggs, no parental care, and adults liable to consume their own spawn if not separated.

Incubation times and fry requirements are undocumented for this species. Aquarists keeping congeners generally raise the temperature slightly to induce spawning, remove adults after the spawning act to protect the eggs, and feed newly-hatched fry on infusoria or rotifers before transitioning to nauplii and finely crushed prepared foods. These practices would be a reasonable starting point for J. yarina, though empirical data are absent.

In the aquarium

Jupiaba yarina is not a species encountered in mainstream aquarium retail and is essentially absent from hobbyist literature. Its congeners are similarly rare in the trade, and most Jupiaba that do appear are collected incidentally by specialist importers working in the upper Amazon and Orinoco systems rather than being commercially farmed.

For aquarists who obtain the species, the general husbandry principles for small clearwater or blackwater Amazonian tetras would apply: soft to moderately hard water at warm tropical temperatures, good water quality, a varied diet of small live and frozen invertebrates supplemented with quality prepared foods, and keeping the fish in a group of six or more. A planted aquarium with subdued lighting, dark substrate, and some surface cover replicates the dappled riparian conditions of the Arinos river margin and tends to bring out the best condition and natural behaviour in shy river tetras.
