Taxonomy & naming
Macropsobrycon uruguayanae was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1915, with the type locality at Cacequy (Cacequi), Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in the rio Uruguay drainage. Eigenmann collected the material in February 1909. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises Macropsobrycon uruguayanae Eigenmann, 1915 as the valid name, and the genus Macropsobrycon is currently treated as monotypic — this is its only species.
The genus sits within the large and taxonomically complex family Characidae. A genus revision published in the journal Neotropical Ichthyology confirmed the distribution of the genus across the rio Uruguay basin (including the rio Negro tributary system in Brazil and Uruguay) and the Laguna dos Patos drainage, and formally described the suite of male reproductive specialisations that make the species of lasting interest to ichthyologists.
Morphology
Macropsobrycon uruguayanae is a small, laterally compressed characid reaching a maximum of approximately 2 in total length. The body is slightly elongate and the lateral line is incomplete, with only 3 to 8 perforated scales — a character that figures in the genus diagnosis.
Sexual dimorphism is pronounced. Mature males bear modified caudal-fin hooks or spinelets on the fin rays, a feature also seen in a number of other inseminating characid genera. Males additionally develop gill glands — secretory structures on the gill arches — that are associated with the insemination process and absent in females. Sexual maturity is reached at approximately 1 in standard length. Overall coloration is relatively subdued for a tetra, consistent with a benthopelagic life in turbid or flowing water rather than open blackwater habitats.
Habitat
The species is endemic to subtropical freshwater systems in southern South America, spanning portions of Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. Its range covers the rio Uruguay basin, the rio Negro basin (a Uruguay tributary), and the Laguna dos Patos system. The species has been recorded in the Rio Ibicuí (within the Uruguay drainage) in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, where it inhabits reaches with sandy bottoms and medium to rapid current.
Reported water temperatures in this subtropical region range from approximately 63–81 °F (63–81 °F), reflecting the marked seasonality of the southern Brazilian highlands. FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic in subtropical freshwater, consistent with its occurrence in current-exposed, sandy-bottomed reaches rather than still, heavily vegetated backwaters.
Feeding

Male secondary sexual characters directly associated with mating include the caudal-fin hooks or spinelets and the gill glands that develop at maturity. The precise mechanics of sperm transfer remain under investigation across inseminating characids as a group. Reproduction has been recorded as year-round with no strong seasonality in studied populations, suggesting that females may store sperm and fertilise eggs over an extended period rather than synchronising spawning with a single seasonal cue.
Breeding
Because fertilisation is internal, the breeding biology of Macropsobrycon uruguayanae diverges from the typical tetra pattern in important ways. A densely planted aquarium with gentle to moderate flow, a sandy substrate, and good water quality mirrors its natural habitat. Group size should allow natural social behaviour; as a small, peaceful characid it can be housed with other small, non-aggressive fish of compatible water-chemistry needs. Live and frozen small invertebrates should form a regular part of the diet.
Conservation
Macropsobrycon uruguayanae is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, assessed in 2021, reflecting a distribution across multiple river basins in southern Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay without evidence of severe population decline. Nonetheless, the subtropical freshwater ecosystems it inhabits — sandy-bottomed streams and rivers of the southern Brazilian highlands — face ongoing pressures from agricultural runoff, water extraction, and riparian habitat degradation in one of South America's most intensively farmed regions. The species' dependence on flowing-water habitats with intact sandy substrates means that catchment-level land-use change is likely its primary long-term risk factor, even if current populations remain broadly stable.
