Macropsobrycon xinguensis is a small, slender characid from the Rio Xingu drainage of Brazil, reaching about 1.5 in standard length. Described by the prolific French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1973, it belongs to a minor characid genus whose members are confined to South American river drainages. Taxonomy & naming

Macropsobrycon xinguensis was described by Jacques Géry in 1973 as part of his extensive work on Neotropical Characoidei. The species is placed in the small genus Macropsobrycon within the large, polyphyletic family Characidae in its broad circumscription as maintained by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. The type locality is the Rio Xingu basin of Brazil, and the species has not been recorded outside that drainage system.

The genus name Macropsobrycon combines Greek elements referencing size and relationship to other characid genera. As with many minor characid genera described in the mid-twentieth century, the internal phylogenetic position of Macropsobrycon has received limited modern molecular scrutiny, and its precise placement within Characidae remains provisional. The valid name follows Géry, 1973, without parentheses, as the species has not been moved to a different genus since its original description.

Morphology

Macropsobrycon xinguensis is a small, slender characid with a maximum recorded standard length of 1.5 in, making it one of the smaller members of its family. Like most small characids it is laterally compressed and streamlined, with a typical tetra body plan: a forked tail, a single dorsal fin, an adipose fin, and a relatively large eye set in a pointed head.

Detailed meristic and morphometric data from the original description and comparative literature characterise the species within its genus, but published illustrations and broad circulation in the hobby are limited. Colouration in life is not well documented in sources available to hobbyists; the species presumably displays the silvery, often translucent body tone common to small clearwater or whitewater Amazon basin characids, potentially with a dark lateral stripe or caudal spot, though specifics are data-sparse for this taxon.

Habitat

The species is known from the Rio Xingu basin in the state of Pará, Brazil. The Xingu is a large blackwater and clearwater river system flowing north to the Amazon, characterised by fast-flowing rapids in its middle course and slower, forested stretches in its lower reaches. Small characids in such systems typically inhabit shallower marginal zones, flooded forest edges, and stream tributaries rather than the main channel.

Water conditions in the Rio Xingu vary considerably by locality and season: clearwater tributaries are warm (roughly 75–82 °F), soft, and acidic to slightly acidic, while floodplain pools shift parameters seasonally with rainfall. Specific habitat data for Macropsobrycon xinguensis in its native range are not documented in the literature available, and the species is not commonly collected for the ornamental trade, leaving its precise ecology poorly known.

Feeding

No specific dietary studies exist for Macropsobrycon xinguensis. By analogy with other small Amazonian characids of similar body form and size, the species is likely a micro-predator and opportunistic omnivore, consuming small invertebrates — zooplankton, aquatic insect larvae, and microcrustaceans — along with whatever organic particulates and plant matter are available in the water column and at the surface.

In aquarium conditions, small characids of this type typically accept fine-grained prepared foods and will eagerly take live or frozen micro-foods such as newly hatched brine shrimp, Daphnia, and copepods. A varied diet that includes some live or frozen invertebrate prey is advisable for long-term health and conditioning.

Mating

No behavioural observations of courtship in Macropsobrycon xinguensis have been published. Small Amazonian characids of this size class are typically egg-scattering open spawners: males pursue and court females with lateral displays, and spawning occurs among fine-leaved vegetation or in open water, with the adhesive eggs dispersing among plants or settling on the substrate.

Parental care is absent, as is the norm across the group. Seasonal triggers in the wild likely relate to rainfall, photoperiod, and temperature changes associated with the Amazonian flood cycle, which simulate the wet season that often prompts spawning in small Neotropical characids.

Breeding

Breeding in captivity has not been documented in hobbyist or scientific literature available for this species. Based on the reproductive biology of closely related small Amazonian characids, the expected pattern is egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with small adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs that hatch within 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures, and tiny free-swimming fry that require infusoria or very fine first foods.

Given the species' rarity in the aquarium hobby and the limited information in the literature, any successful captive reproduction would be notable. Standard small tetra breeding protocols — a small, heavily planted or moss-filled breeding tank, soft acidic water, fine spawning medium, and removal of adults after spawning — would represent a reasonable starting point.

In the aquarium

Macropsobrycon xinguensis is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade and is not an established hobby species. The limited information available suggests it would be kept much like other diminutive Amazonian tetras: in a well-planted, soft, slightly acidic aquarium with gentle filtration and subdued or well-diffused lighting, in a group of at least six to allow natural schooling behaviour.

Given its small size — under 1.5 in SL — it is best kept with similarly sized, peaceful tankmates and away from anything that could predate it. Micro-foods should form a significant part of the diet. The species is essentially a specialist fish for dedicated Xingu-region biotope enthusiasts or researchers; it does not appear in mainstream availability lists and would require specialist sources to obtain.

Conservation

Macropsobrycon xinguensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment dating from 2025. The Rio Xingu basin, while subject to significant anthropogenic pressure — most notably the Belo Monte hydroelectric complex, which has altered hydrology and habitat in the lower Xingu — supports a very large and diverse ichthyofauna, and small wide-ranging characids of this type are generally not considered at immediate extinction risk at the basin scale.

Nonetheless, the Xingu's endemic fish community is one of the most threatened in Brazil due to dam construction, habitat degradation, and deforestation in the catchment. The Least Concern status reflects the current population estimate rather than immunity to future threats, and detailed population surveys for minor characid species such as this one remain uncommon.
