Markiana geayi was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1909. The authority appears in parentheses because the species was subsequently transferred from the genus in which Pellegrin originally placed it; the valid combination Markiana geayi, with Pellegrin as the parenthetical author, is maintained in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong), which serves as the authority for valid names on this site.
The genus Markiana is monotypic — Markiana geayi is its only species — and its systematic placement within Characidae has been debated. Morphological and molecular studies have positioned Markiana in varying positions within the family, and it does not belong to any of the large, well-known tetra lineages such as the Stevardiinae or Characinae. The species is named in honour of the French naturalist and collector François Geay, who gathered zoological material from Venezuela and the Guyanas around the turn of the twentieth century.
Morphology
Markiana geayi is a moderately elongated, laterally compressed characid with a somewhat fusiform body plan reminiscent of a small, slender Triportheus or a streamlined tetra. The lateral line is complete, and the body is predominantly silvery, with a faint dusky midlateral stripe that extends from behind the operculum toward the caudal peduncle. The fins are generally hyaline to faintly yellowish, without conspicuous colour markings.
Detailed meristic data are sparse in the accessible literature. The species lacks the bold colour patterns of aquarium favourites and is not strongly sexually dimorphic in coloration; like many characids it may show subtle differences in body depth or abdominal fullness between sexes. Habitat
Markiana geayi is recorded from northern South America, with type material from Venezuela or the adjacent Guianan region. Mating
No published observations of courtship behaviour in Markiana geayi are available. As a member of Characidae, the species is presumed to be an egg-scatterer with no parental care — the reproductive mode that predominates across the family. Markiana geayi is essentially absent from the mainstream ornamental-fish trade and is unlikely to be encountered except through specialist importers or collectors working with wild-caught South American material. No established husbandry guidelines exist in the hobby literature for this species; any care recommendations are therefore extrapolated from the ecology and biology of similar small caracids.
A group of six or more individuals in a well-filtered aquarium of 31.5 in or more, with soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 75–82 °F), ample swimming space, and subdued lighting would represent a reasonable starting point. The species is expected to be peaceful toward fish of similar or larger size. Good water quality, a varied diet, and the social stimulus of conspecifics are priorities. Given the data-sparse status of this fish, aquarists keeping it are encouraged to document observations and share them with the broader community.

This is common for obscure, rarely collected characids whose distribution, population size, and trends are poorly known. The Orinoco and Guianan drainages that likely harbour this species face ongoing pressures from deforestation, agriculture, and small-scale mining, which degrade water quality and alter hydrological regimes.
